A New PCB Rotating Coil at NSLS-II

Several R&D projects are underway at NSLS-II towards an upgrade of its storage ring with a new lattice that will use high field magnets with small bores of 16-22 mm. A large fraction of the high field magnets are expected to be of permanent magnet technology that will require precise magnetic measurements and field harmonics corrections. A new magnetic measurement bench has been built based on a printed circuit board (PCB) coil of 12 mm diameter and 270 mm active length. This PCB coil has the capabil-ity of measuring field quality to a level of 10 ppm of the main field up to the 15th harmonic with a sensitivity between 0.01 m2 and 0.02 m2 at the reference radius of 5 mm. This paper will describe the main features of the rotating coil bench and discuss the measurement results of a permanent-magnet Halbach quadrupole of 12.7 mm bore diameter.

A New Magnetic Measurement System for the Future Low Emittance NSLS-II Storage Ring

A new magnetic measurement system is under construc-tion at BNL for accurate field harmonic measurements and fiducialization of magnets for a future upgrade of the NSLS- II storage ring. The entire storage ring is envi-sioned to be replaced with a new lattice concept, known as Complex Bend, which superimposes dipole and high-gradient quadrupole fields. The magnetic measurement system will use rotating wire and a PCB rotating coil specifically designed for small-aperture (< 15 mm) high gradient magnets. In this paper we describe in detail the mechanical design and the data acquisition hardware and software.

Vertical Septum Magnet Design for the APS Upgrade

The vertical injection scheme proposed for the APS Upgrade (APS-U) Project requires a challenging septum magnet that must meet stringent beam physics, magnetic field leakage, and vacuum requirements. The current iteration of this magnet design includes an enlarged stored-beam chamber aperture of 9 mm x 12 mm and a reduction of the septum thickness to 1.5 mm. The enlarged aperture accommodates a non-evaporable getter (NEG)-coated stored beam chamber to better achieve the required vacuum. A prototype septum magnet has been built and measurements confirm the cancellation of a peak leakage field even though the value is six times larger than the design. The leakage field measured at the upstream (US) end cancels the downstream (DS) end as was expected by design. The measured and simulated leakage field and the stored beam trajectories are reported.

Magnetic Field Measurements of First Pre-series Full -Length 4.2 m Quadrupole MQXFA03 Using PCB Rotating Coils for the Hi Hi-Lumi LHC Project

The U.S. Hi-Lumi LHC Accelerator Upgrade Project (AUP) and CERN have joined efforts to develop high field quad-rupoles for the Hi-Lumi LHC upgrade. The US national laborato-ries in the AUP project will deliver 10 magnets and each cryostat has two 4.2 m high gradient quadrupoles in it. These magnets are made of Nb3Sn conductors, with large aperture (150 mm) and in-tegrated gradient of 556.9 T. This paper reports on magnetic measurements performed during the vertical test at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) in 2019-2020. A warm measurement Z-Scan (+/- 15 A) with 42 Z-positions before cool-down was per-formed at BNL. The results were directly compared to field data measured at LBNL during magnet assembly. Measured harmonics and magnetic center offsets (ΔX and ΔY) have provided timely and informative diagnostics on the magnet structure’s shape at both warm and cold temperatures. A new centering fixture was de-signed and added to better center the warm bore tube which con-tains the rotating coil probe. After the quench training to 16.47 kA was achieved, a complete set of cold measurements (Z-Scan at 16.47 kA and I-Scan from 960 A to 16.47 kA and back to 960 A) was made. Periodic axial variation of allowed and nonallowed harmonics was observed which is related to the coil radial and/or mid-plane variations along the magnet axis. Overall, the average harmonics in the straight section are within the required field boundaries.
