Search for long-lived heavy neutral leptons decaying in the CMS muon detectors in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

A search for heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) decaying in the CMS muon system is presented. A data sample is used corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb - 1 of proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV , recorded at the CERN LHC in 2016โ€“2018. Decay products of long-lived HNLs could interact with the shielding materials in the CMS muon system and create hadronic and electromagnetic showers detected in the muon chambers. This distinctive signature provides a unique handle to search for HNLs with masses below 4 GeV and proper decay lengths of the order of meters. The signature is sensitive to HNL couplings to all three generations of leptons. Candidate events are required to contain a prompt electron or muon originating from a vertex on the beam axis and a displaced shower in the muon chambers. No significant deviations from the standard model background expectation are observed. In the electron (muon) channel, the most stringent limits to date are set for HNLs in the mass range of 2.1โ€“3.0 (1.9โ€“3.3) GeV, reaching mixing matrix element squared values as low as 8.6 ( 4.6 ) ร— 10 - 6 .

Search for long-lived heavy neutrinos in the decays of B mesons produced in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

A search for long-lived heavy neutrinos (N) in the decays of B mesons produced in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 41.6 fb$^{โˆ’1}$ collected in 2018 by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, using a dedicated data stream that enhances the number of recorded events containing B mesons. The search probes heavy neutrinos with masses in the range 1 < m$_{N}$ < 3 GeV and decay lengths in the range 10$^{โˆ’2}$ < cฯ„$_{N}$ < 10$^{4}$ mm, where ฯ„$_{N}$ is the N proper mean lifetime. Signal events are defined by the signature B โ†’ โ„“$_{B}$NX; N โ†’ โ„“$^{ยฑ}$ฯ€$^{โˆ“}$, where the leptons โ„“$_{B}$ and โ„“ can be either a muon or an electron, provided that at least one of them is a muon. The hadronic recoil system, X, is treated inclusively and is not reconstructed. No significant excess of events over the standard model background is observed in any of the โ„“$^{ยฑ}$ฯ€$^{โˆ“}$ invariant mass distributions. Limits at 95% confidence level on the sum of the squares of the mixing amplitudes between heavy and light neutrinos, |V$_{N}$|$^{2}$, and on cฯ„$_{N}$ are obtained in different mixing scenarios for both Majorana and Dirac-like N particles. The most stringent upper limit |V$_{N}$|$^{2}$ < 2.0 ร— 10$^{โˆ’5}$ is obtained at m$_{N}$ = 1.95 GeV for the Majorana case where N mixes exclusively with muon neutrinos. The limits on |V$_{N}$|$^{2}$ for masses 1 < m$_{N}$ < 1.7 GeV are the most stringent from a collider experiment to date.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Search for heavy neutral leptons in final states with electrons, muons, and hadronically decaying tau leptons in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

A search for heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) of Majorana or Dirac type using proton-proton collision data at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV is presented. The data were collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{โˆ’1}$. Events with three charged leptons (electrons, muons, and hadronically decaying tau leptons) are selected, corresponding to HNL production in association with a charged lepton and decay of the HNL to two charged leptons and a standard model (SM) neutrino. The search is performed for HNL masses between 10 GeV and 1.5 TeV. No evidence for an HNL signal is observed in data. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are found for the squared coupling strength of the HNL to SM neutrinos, considering exclusive coupling of the HNL to a single SM neutrino generation, for both Majorana and Dirac HNLs. The limits exceed previously achieved experimental constraints for a wide range of HNL masses, and the limits on tau neutrino coupling scenarios with HNL masses above the W boson mass are presented for the first time.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Search for the decay of the Higgs boson to a pair of light pseudoscalar bosons in the final state with four bottom quarks in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{\textrm{s}} $ = 13 TeV

A search is presented for the decay of the 125 GeV Higgs boson (H) to a pair of new light pseudoscalar bosons (a), followed by the prompt decay of each a boson to a bottom quark-antiquark pair, $ \textrm{H}\to \textrm{aa}\to \textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}}\textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}} $. The analysis is performed using a data sample of proton-proton collisions collected with the CMS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{โˆ’1}$. To reduce the background from standard model processes, the search requires the Higgs boson to be produced in association with a leptonically decaying W or Z boson. The analysis probes the production of new light bosons in a 15 < m$_{a}$ < 60 GeV mass range. Assuming the standard model predictions for the Higgs boson production cross sections for pp โ†’ WH and ZH, model independent upper limits at 95% confidence level are derived for the branching fraction $ \mathcal{B}\left(\textrm{H}\to \textrm{aa}\to \textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}}\textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}}\right) $. The combined WH and ZH observed upper limit on the branching fraction ranges from 1.10 for m$_{a}$ = 20 GeV to 0.36 for m$_{a}$ = 60 GeV, complementing other measurements in the ฮผฮผฯ„ฯ„, ฯ„ฯ„ฯ„ฯ„ and bbโ„“โ„“ (โ„“ = ฮผ, ฯ„) channels.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Search for Baryon Number Violation in Top Quark Production and Decay Using Proton-Proton Collisions at $\sqrt{๐‘ }$ = 13 TeV

A search is presented for baryon number violating interactions in top quark production and decay. The analysis uses data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC with an integrated luminosity of 138 fb โˆ’1 . Candidate events are selected by requiring two oppositely charged leptons (electrons or muons) and exactly one jet identified as originating from a bottom quark. Multivariate discriminants are used to separate the signal from the background. No significant deviation from the standard model prediction is observed. Upper limits are placed on the strength of baryon number violating couplings. For the first time the production of single top quarks via baryon number violating interactions is studied. This allows the search to set the most stringent constraints to date on the branching fraction of the top quark decay to a lepton, an up-type quark (๐‘ข or ๐‘), and a down-type quark (๐‘‘, ๐‘ , or ๐‘). The results improve the previous bounds by 3 to 6 orders of magnitude based on the fermion flavor combination of the baryon number violating interactions.

Search for stealth supersymmetry in final states with two photons, jets, and low missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

The results of a search for stealth supersymmetry in final states with two photons and jets, targeting a phase space region with low missing transverse momentum ( p T miss ), are reported. The study is based on a sample of proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb - 1 . As LHC results continue to constrain the parameter space of the minimal supersymmetric standard model, the low p T miss regime is increasingly valuable to explore. To estimate the backgrounds due to standard model processes in such events, we apply corrections derived from simulation to an estimate based on a control selection in data. The results are interpreted in the context of simplified stealth supersymmetry models with gluino and squark pair production. The observed data are consistent with the standard model predictions, and gluino (squark) masses of up to 2150 (1850) GeV are excluded at the 95% confidence level.

Search for a third-generation leptoquark coupled to a ฯ„ lepton and a b quark through single, pair, and nonresonant production in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

A search is presented for a third-generation leptoquark (LQ) coupled exclusively to a ฯ„ lepton and a b quark. The search is based on proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded with the CMS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{โˆ’1}$. Events with ฯ„ leptons and a varying number of jets originating from b quarks are considered, targeting the single and pair production of LQs, as well as nonresonant t-channel LQ exchange. An excess is observed in the data with respect to the background expectation in the combined analysis of all search regions. For a benchmark LQ mass of 2 TeV and an LQ-b-ฯ„ coupling strength of 2.5, the excess reaches a local significance of up to 2.8 standard deviations. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level are placed on the LQ production cross section in the LQ mass range 0.5โ€“2.3 TeV, and up to 3 TeV for t-channel LQ exchange. Leptoquarks are excluded below masses of 1.22โ€“1.88 TeV for different LQ models and varying coupling strengths up to 2.5. The study of nonresonant ฯ„ฯ„ production through t-channel LQ exchange allows lower limits on the LQ mass of up to 2.3 TeV to be obtained.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Measurement of the primary Lund jet plane density in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{\textrm{s}} $ = 13 TeV

A measurement is presented of the primary Lund jet plane (LJP) density in inclusive jet production in proton-proton collisions. The analysis uses 138 fb$^{โˆ’1}$ of data collected by the CMS experiment at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV. The LJP, a representation of the phase space of emissions inside jets, is constructed using iterative jet declustering. The transverse momentum k$_{T}$ and the splitting angle โˆ†R of an emission relative to its emitter are measured at each step of the jet declustering process. The average density of emissions as function of ln(k$_{T}$/GeV) and ln(R/โˆ†R) is measured for jets with distance parameters R = 0.4 or 0.8, transverse momentum p$_{T}$> 700 GeV, and rapidity |y| < 1.7. The jet substructure is measured using the charged-particle tracks of the jet. The measured distributions, unfolded to the level of stable charged particles, are compared with theoretical predictions from simulations and with perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations. Due to the ability of the LJP to factorize physical effects, these measurements can be used to improve different aspects of the physics modeling in event generators.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Inclusive and differential cross section measurements of $ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}\textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}} $ production in the lepton+jets channel at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

Measurements of inclusive and normalized differential cross sections of the associated production of top quark-antiquark and bottom quark-antiquark pairs, $ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}\textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}} $, are presented. The results are based on data from proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{โˆ’1}$. The cross sections are measured in the lepton+jets decay channel of the top quark pair, using events containing exactly one isolated electron or muon and at least five jets. Measurements are made in four fiducial phase space regions, targeting different aspects of the $ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}\textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}} $ process. Distributions are unfolded to the particle level through maximum likelihood fits, and compared with predictions from several event generators. The inclusive cross section measurements of this process in the fiducial phase space regions are the most precise to date. In most cases, the measured inclusive cross sections exceed the predictions with the chosen generator settings. The only exception is when using a particular choice of dynamic renormalization scale, $ {\mu}_{\textrm{R}}=\frac{1}{2}{\prod}_{i=\textrm{t},\overline{\textrm{t}},\textrm{b},\overline{\textrm{b}}}{m}_{\textrm{T},i}^{1/4} $, where $ {m}_{\textrm{T},i}^2={m}_i^2+{p}_{\textrm{T},i}^2 $ are the transverse masses of top and bottom quarks. The differential cross sections show varying degrees of compatibility with the theoretical predictions, and none of the tested generators with the chosen settings simultaneously describe all the measured distributions.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Search for Wโ€ฒ bosons decaying to a top and a bottom quark in leptonic final states in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

A search for Wโ€ฒ bosons decaying to a top and a bottom quark in final states including an electron or a muon is performed with the CMS detector at the LHC. The analyzed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{โˆ’1}$ of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Good agreement with the standard model expectation is observed and no evidence for the existence of the Wโ€ฒ boson is found over the mass range examined. The largest observed deviation from the standard model expectation is found for a Wโ€ฒ boson mass ($ {m}_{{\textrm{W}}^{\prime }} $) hypothesis of 3.8 TeV with a relative decay width of 1%, with a local (global) significance of 2.6 (2.0) standard deviations. Upper limits on the production cross sections of Wโ€ฒ bosons decaying to a top and a bottom quark are set. Left- and right-handed Wโ€ฒ bosons with $ {m}_{{\textrm{W}}^{\prime }} $ below 3.9 and 4.3 TeV, respectively, are excluded at the 95% confidence level, under the assumption that the new particle has a narrow decay width. Limits are also set for relative decay widths up to 30%.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Search for long-lived particles decaying to final states with a pair of muons in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13.6 TeV

An inclusive search for long-lived exotic particles (LLPs) decaying to final states with a pair of muons is presented. The search uses data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.6 fb$^{โˆ’1}$ collected by the CMS experiment from the proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13.6 TeV in 2022, the first year of Run 3 of the CERN LHC. The experimental signature is a pair of oppositely charged muons originating from a secondary vertex spatially separated from the proton-proton interaction point by distances ranging from several hundred ฮผm to several meters. The sensitivity of the search benefits from new triggers for displaced dimuons developed for Run 3. The results are interpreted in the framework of the hidden Abelian Higgs model, in which the Higgs boson decays to a pair of long-lived dark photons, and of an R-parity violating supersymmetry model, in which long-lived neutralinos decay to a pair of muons and a neutrino. The limits set on these models are the most stringent to date in wide regions of lifetimes for LLPs with masses larger than 10 GeV.

Search for supersymmetry in final states with disappearing tracks in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV

A search is presented for charged, long-lived supersymmetric particles in final states with one or more disappearing tracks. The search is based on data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC between 2016 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb โˆ’1 . The search is performed over final states characterized by varying numbers of jets, ๐‘-tagged jets, electrons, and muons. The length of signal-candidate tracks in the plane perpendicular to the beam axis is used to characterize the lifetimes of wino- and Higgsino-like charginos produced in the context of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. The dโข๐ธ/dโข๐‘ฅ energy loss of signal-candidate tracks is used to increase the sensitivity to charginos with a large mass and thus a small Lorentz boost. The observed results are found to be statistically consistent with the background-only hypothesis. Limits on the pair-production cross section of gluinos and squarks are presented in the framework of simplified models of supersymmetric particle production and decay, and for electroweakino production based on models of wino and Higgsino dark matter. The limits presented are the most stringent to date for scenarios with light third-generation squarks and a wino- or Higgsino-like dark matter candidate capable of explaining the observed dark matter relic density.

Search for flavor changing neutral current interactions of the top quark in final states with a photon and additional jets in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

A search for the production of a top quark in association with a photon and additional jets via flavor changing neutral current interactions is presented. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb - 1 . The search is performed by looking for processes where a single top quark is produced in association with a photon, or a pair of top quarks where one of the top quarks decays into a photon and an up or charm quark. Events with an electron or a muon, a photon, one or more jets, and missing transverse momentum are selected. Multivariate analysis techniques are used to discriminate signal and standard model background processes. No significant deviation is observed over the predicted background. Observed (expected) upper limits are set on the branching fractions of top quark decays: B ( t โ†’ u ฮณ ) < 0.95 ร— 10 - 5 ( 1.20 ร— 10 - 5 ) and B ( t โ†’ c ฮณ ) < 1.51 ร— 10 - 5 ( 1.54 ร— 10 - 5 ) at 95% confidence level, assuming a single nonzero coupling at a time. The obtained limit for B ( t โ†’ u ฮณ ) is similar to the current best limit, while the limit for B ( t โ†’ c ฮณ ) is significantly tighter than previous results.

Search for dark matter particles in W$^{+}$W$^{โˆ’}$ events with transverse momentum imbalance in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

A search for dark matter particles is performed using events with a pair of W bosons and large missing transverse momentum. Candidate events are selected by requiring one or two leptons (โ„“ = electrons or muons). The analysis is based on proton-proton collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{โˆ’1}$. No significant excess over the expected standard model background is observed in the โ„“ฮฝqq and 2โ„“2ฮฝ final states of the W$^{+}$W$^{โˆ’}$ boson pair. Limits are set on dark matter production in the context of a simplified dark Higgs model, with a dark Higgs boson mass above the W$^{+}$W$^{โˆ’}$ mass threshold. The dark matter phase space is probed in the mass range 100โ€“300 GeV, extending the scope of previous searches. Current exclusion limits are improved in the range of dark Higgs masses from 160 to 250 GeV, for a dark matter mass of 200 GeV.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Search for Long-Lived Heavy Neutral Leptons with Lepton Flavour Conserving or Violating Decays to a Jet and a Charged Lepton

A search for long-lived heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) is presented, which considers the hadronic final state and coupling scenarios involving all three lepton generations in the 2โ€“20 GeV HNL mass range for the first time. Events comprising two leptons (electrons or muons) and jets are analyzed in a data sample of proton-proton collisions, recorded with the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{โˆ’1}$. A novel jet tagger, based on a deep neural network, has been developed to identify jets from an HNL decay using various features of the jet and its constituent particles. The network output can be used as a powerful discriminating tool to probe a broad range of HNL lifetimes and masses. Contributions from background processes are determined from data. No excess of events in data over the expected background is observed. Upper limits on the HNL production cross section are derived as functions of the HNL mass and the three coupling strengths V$_{โ„“N}$ to each lepton generation โ„“ and presented as exclusion limits in the coupling-mass plane, as lower limits on the HNL lifetime, and on the HNL mass. In this search, the most stringent limit on the coupling strength is obtained for pure muon coupling scenarios; values of |$ {V}_{\mu \textrm{N}}^2 $| > 5 (4) ร— 10$^{โˆ’7}$ are excluded for Dirac (Majorana) HNLs with a mass of 10 GeV at a confidence level of 95% that correspond to proper decay lengths of 17 (10) mm.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Muon identification using multivariate techniques in the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 13 TeV

The identification of prompt and isolated muons, as well asmuons from heavy-flavour hadron decays, is an important task. Wedeveloped two multivariate techniques to provide highly efficientidentification for muons with transverse momentum greater than10 GeV. One provides a continuous variable as an alternative to acut-based identification selection and offers a betterdiscrimination power against misidentified muons. The other oneselects prompt and isolated muons by using isolation requirements toreduce the contamination from nonprompt muons arising inheavy-flavour hadron decays. Both algorithms are developed using59.7 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions data at a centre-of-massenergy of โˆš(s)=13 TeV collected in 2018 with the CMSexperiment at the CERN LHC.

Study of charm hadronization with prompt $ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $ baryons in proton-proton and lead-lead collisions at $ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $ = 5.02 TeV

The production of prompt $ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $ baryons is measured via the exclusive decay channel $ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+}\to p{\textrm{K}}^{-}{\pi}^{+} $ at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.02 TeV, using proton-proton (pp) and lead-lead (PbPb) collision data collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The pp and PbPb data were obtained in 2017 and 2018 with integrated luminosities of 252 and 0.607 nb$^{โˆ’1}$, respectively. The measurements are performed within the $ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $ rapidity interval |y| < 1 with transverse momentum (p$_{T}$) ranges of 3โ€“30 and 6โ€“40 GeV/c for pp and PbPb collisions, respectively. Compared to the yields in pp collisions scaled by the expected number of nucleon-nucleon interactions, the observed yields of $ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $ with p$_{T}$> 10 GeV/c are strongly suppressed in PbPb collisions. The level of suppression depends significantly on the collision centrality. The $ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $/D$^{0}$ production ratio is similar in PbPb and pp collisions at p$_{T}$> 10 GeV/c, suggesting that the coalescence process does not play a dominant role in prompt $ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $ baryon production at higher p$_{T}$.[graphic not available: see fulltext]
