In situ energetics modulation enables high-efficiency and stable inverted perovskite solar cells

In contrast to conventional (n-i-p) perovskite solar cells (PSCs), inverted (p-i-n) PSCs offer enhanced stability and integrability with tandem solar cell architectures, which have garnered increasing interest. However, p-i-n cells suffer from energy level misalignment with transport layers, imbalanced transport of photo-generated electrons and holes, and significant defects with the perovskite films. Here we introduce tris(2,4,6-trimethyl-3-(pyridin-3-yl)phenyl)borane (3TPYMB), a nonionic n-type molecule that, through hydrogen bonding and Lewis acid-base reactions with perovskite surfaces or grain boundaries, enables in situ modulation of perovskite energetics, effectively mitigating the key challenges of p-i-n PSCs. The p-i-n PSCs incorporating 3TPYMB achieve a certified quasi-steady-state power conversion efficiency of 24.55 +- 0.33%, with a reverse scan efficiency of 25.58%. Finally, they also exhibit exceptional stability, with unencapsulated devices retaining 97.8% of their initial efficiency after 1,800 h of continuous operation at maximum power point under N 2 atmosphere, 1 sun illumination and 60 °C conditions.

Continuous-flow reactor with superior production rate and stability for CO 2 reduction using semiconductor photocatalysts

Semiconductor photocatalyst approaches for solar CO 2 reduction are attractive due to their simplicity but have lagged in efficiency compared to less-integrated photoelectrochemical (PEC) approaches and to electrolysis reactors. We identify poor mass transport and catalyst deactivation as key constraints. To address them, we have developed a continuous-flow photocatalytic reactor system allowing us to control the triple-phase interface on the photocatalyst surface using the liquid and reactant gas flow rates. With the goal of selectively producing CO, the reactor is optimized by controlling the pressure and flow rates of the reactant gas and electrolyte in contact with both sides with the intermediately placed catalyst. In comparison to batch reactors with an immobile photocatalyst bed and gas phase CO 2 or CO 2 purged water, 10–24 times higher production rates are achieved for photocatalysts such as TiO 2 , ZnO, C 3 N 4 , and CdS by simply changing to the designed flow-type photoreactor without any catalyst modification. In addition, CO selectivity (93.2%) and long-term stability (>780 min) using the designed reactor are significantly enhanced compared to using the batch reactors (71.7%, <180 min for reduced 50% activity). Here, we propose that the enhanced mass transport on the photocatalyst surface accelerates the desorption of the initial photolysis product, CO, and prevents the poisoning effect from deactivating photocatalyst activity. This study has the potential to facilitate the utilization of semiconductor-based photocatalytic reactions for achieving superior performance wih gaseous reactants.

Novel in-capsule synthesis of metal–organic framework for innovative carbon dioxide capture system

Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have been developed as solid sorbents for CO2 capture applications and their properties can be controlled by tuning the chemical blocks of their crystalline units. A number of MOFs (e.g., HKUST-1) have been developed but the question remains how to deploy them for gas–solid contact. Unfortunately, the direct use of MOFs as nanocrystals would lead to serious problems and risks. Here, for the first time, we report a novel MOF-based hybrid sorbent that is produced via an innovative in-situ microencapsulated synthesis. Using a custom-made double capillary microfluidic assembly, double emulsions of the MOF precursor solutions and UV-curable silicone shell fluid are produced. Subsequently, HKUST-1 MOF is successfully synthesized within the droplets enclosed in the gas permeable microcapsules. The developed MOF-bearing microcapsules uniquely allow the deployment of functional nanocrystals without the challenge of handling ultrafine particles, and further, can selectively reject undesired compounds to protect encapsulated MOFs.
