Urban Air Mobility National Campaign Test Series

The Urban Air Mobility (UAM) National Campaign test series is designed to promote public confidence in UAM safety, facilitate community-wide learning while capturing the public’s imagination, and give prospective vehicle manufacturers and operators, and prospective airspace service providers, insights into the evolving regulatory and operational environment. The National Campaign is also intended to support requirements and system development for Urban Air Mobility through integrated demonstrations of candidate vehicles and airspace in operational scenarios critical to scalable commercialization. The NASA National Campaign series will facilitate bringing together vehicle and airspace service providers to demonstrate industry’s concept and technology maturity levels with respect to vehicle performance, safety assurance, and airspace interoperability solutions for civil use.

A Proposed Taxonomy for Advanced Air Mobility

There has been a large growth in interest of utilizing new technologies—most notably electrified propulsion and automation—as well as new business models to bring aviation services into the daily lives of a greater segment of society. Generally, these services are envisioned to augment existing ground modes of transportation or to enable new operating capabilities for shorter-range aviation missions. These services, which have become known as advanced air mobility (AAM), include passenger transportation, cargo transportation, and aerial work missions, such as aerial photography. In this paper we describe advanced air mobility and provide a framework based on demand and supply concepts that can be used for developing a taxonomy for AAM with a focus on passenger applications. This taxonomy is intended to facilitate the nascent AAM stakeholder community in adopting a common terminology and to enable better coordination among disparate AAM research and development activities.

Advanced Air Mobility Vertiport Considerations: A List and Overview

Advanced air mobility (AAM) is an emerging field in aeronautics that involves utilizing small aircraft for everyday transportation and other services, and many AAM aircraft are envisioned to take off and land at new infrastructure termed vertiports. This paper describes a variety of considerations related to AAM vertiports that need to be considered in the planning for and deployment of vertiports in practice. The factors include siting, design, regulations, safety, environmental impact, social acceptance, equity, and operational integration factors. Over 450 considerations were compiled from Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) participating in NASA’s AAM Ecosystem Working Groups (AEWGs) in October 2021. This paper consolidates these considerations and broadly disseminates the valuable knowledge of these SMEs. These considerations can be used by researchers to conduct demand and network analysis, local transportation planners to develop AAM networks for their community, and the AAM ecosystem members to identify policy, standards, and research gaps.
