Assessment of Fluoropolymer Production and Use With Analysis of Alternative Replacement Materials

This report focuses on fluoropolymers, which are a subgroup of the much larger class of fluorinated chemicals known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Clearly distinguishing fluoropolymers is important to understanding their distinctive chemical properties, associated risks and benefits, and roles in commerce. In this report, the factors that are considered in a lifecycle assessment (LCA) of fluoropolymers will be discussed. These include the manufacturing of fluoropolymers, their use in industry, and available replacement technologies. Emphasis is placed on fluoropolymer plastics because of their extensive use in the commerce sectors considered here, specifically aerospace, automotive, battery, building construction, chemical processing, electronics, infrastructure, semiconductor, solar panel, and wind energy industries.

Characterizing the LCA Impacts of Saline Aquifer CO2 Sequestration Systems - LCAXVIII

This work was presented at the American Center for Life Cycle Assessment (ACLCA) LCAXVIII Conference in Fort Collins, CO on September 25, 2018. The purpose of this work is to characterize the LCA impacts of saline aquifer CO2 sequestration systems. The LCA model developed can assess the TRACI impacts of any of the 226 saline aquifer formations identified in the U.S. and included in the NETL’s Saline Storage Cost Model (SSCM). The output from the SSCM for each formation is used to inform aquifer performance and injectability, which drives CO2 storage capacity, as well as construction and closure activities. In addition, brine management approaches for each scenario are derived from the SSCM. The evaluation of individual formations allows a more statistically robust evaluation of the potential for saline storage and the potential environmental tradeoffs associated with saline storage.

Establishing a Life Cycle Power Baseline for the U.S.

This work was presented at the American Center for Life Cycle Assessment (ACLCA) LCAXVI Conference in Charleston, SC on September 28, 2016. The presentation discusses the goals of the work, which include regionalized profiles and enough inventory items to support life cycle impact analysis using the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tool for Reduction and Assessment of Chemicals and Other Environmental Impacts (TRACI). The presentation also touches on different load cycles for generators and accounting for changes in performance over time.

Life Cycle Analysis of Natural Gas Extraction and Power Generation

This analysis calculates the life cycle environmental burdens for natural gas systems. Two system boundaries are used: a cradle-to-gate boundary that allows analysis of the natural gas supply chain, and a cradle-to-grave boundary that allows analysis of electricity produced from natural gas. For the cradle-to-gate boundary, the functional unit (i.e., the delivered service) is 1 MJ of natural gas delivered by local distribution companies. When the boundaries are expanded to include power generation, the functional unit is the delivery of 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity to the consumer.

NETL Upstream Dashboard Version 3

In recent years, the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) has been using life cycle analysis (LCA) as a new and innovative way to analyze and compare different power production and transportation fuel production pathways. By using LCA, NETL has integrated a holistic approach to comparing energy production pathways instead of solely considering combustion emissions at energy conversion facilities (i.e., power plant or fuels refinery).
