NetlOlca

This Python module provides a public API (via the class and function definitions) for interacting with GreenDelta's openLCA (version 2) either directly (via the IPC server) or indirectly (via an exported JSON-LD zip file). It is a key piece in NETL's new life cycle assessment unit process library reporting template.

NETL LCA Update US DOE Special Session, ACLCA 2024

This work was presented at the American Center for Life Cycle Assessment 2024 Conference in Snowbird, UT on September 24, 2024. The evaluation of the environmental advantages and disadvantages of energy technology and policy options requires the comparison of those options on a common basis, and as such, it needs to include not only obvious impacts like converting fuel to useful energy via combustion, but of infrastructure construction, extraction, processing and transportation of fuels, and transport of the final energy product to an end user. Further, it requires comparison across multiple categories of impacts, as single metric perspectives can miss important cross-media tradeoffs. At the Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory, life cycle analysis is used as a tool and framework for undertaking a broad range of these types of evaluations. This overview will describe the NETL LCA work over the past year.

Life Cycle Analysis of Enhanced Rock Weathering

This study aims to evaluate the life cycle impacts of weathering agricultural fields in the U.S. Midwest with igneous rock (dunite/olivine) and industrial waste minerals using literature and estimated data from a techno-economic analysis (TEA). The GWP impact with igneous rock and industrial waste materials ranges 34–263 and 23–180 kg CO2-eq/tonne CO2 sequestered, respectively, with comminution and transportation as the main environmental hotspots for igneous rock, and transportation for industrial waste.

Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification Considerations for Carbon Dioxide Removal

The project investigates Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) methods for Enhanced Weathering and Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR) technologies. Enhanced Weathering accelerates natural mineral processes to capture CO2, while mCDR leverages oceanic processes for carbon sequestration. The study focuses on developing standardized MRV protocols, assessing environmental impacts, and evaluating the scalability and economic feasibility of these carbon sequestration methods. The goal is to ensure reliable and transparent data for validating and improving CO2 removal technologies.

Advanced Reaction Systems

An overview of NETL's Gasification Systems R&D was provided at DOE's Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Technology Office (HFTO) Annual Merit Review (AMR) on May 7, 2024, in Arlington, VA. The objective of the Advanced Reaction Systems Portfolio is to design, develop, and analyze technologies to support the mission of the Gasification Program to enable the use of diverse feedstocks to produce hydrogen and other value-added products with net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.

Abstract for CRADA between National Energy Technology Laboratory and Eion Corp

The National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) and Eion Carbon (Participant) will collaborate on a lifecycle assessment (LCA) and techno-economic assessment (TEA) of Eion Carbon’s carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) removal process. Eion Carbon’s process removes atmospheric CO 2 using high efficiency, fast-weathering minerals applied on farmland. Eion Carbon’s patented direct measurement process delivers permanent, verifiable carbon removal and diverse environmental co-benefits. This collaboration with NETL aims to produce corroborated assessment reports that will play an instrumental role in follow on funding applications and customer evaluations.

Abstract for CRADA between National Energy Technology Laboratory and ClearSign Technologies Corporation

The National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) and ClearSign Technologies Corporation (Participant) will collaborate in the development of a preliminary LCA for the scaling of a hydrogen burner product currently in proof of concept and primarily developed for chemicals processing at refineries. The current combustion product has been tested at 80% hydrogen content (20% natural gas) and maintains the NOx 97% improvement vs incumbent technologies, yet the GHG emissions of the product and use case in refining to chemicals processing would be the focus of this preliminary LCA. The Participant has noted areas where they expect environmental improvements relative to alternatives, but these improvements have not been quantified to date. The collaboration will facilitate characterizing the emissions improvement comparative to some selected incumbent technologies during the deployment.

Cradle-to-Gate Life Cycle Analysis Baseline for United States Coal Mining and Delivery

The goal of this study is to highlight the environmental impacts from upstream coal production to its delivery at a power plant. This study is meant to characterize different coal basins, coal types, and mine types used to produce electric power in the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) regions in the United States using a functional unit of 1 kg of coal. The boundary of this study includes underground or surface extraction, water use at the mine, ventilation, coal handling, coal cleaning, mine tailing disposal, and transportation via conveyer belt, truck, ocean vessel, barge, and train. NETL LCA of Carbon Capture

This presentation was given at the University of Wyoming Distinguished Speaker Series on October 30, 2023. It provides a brief overview of what life cycle analysis (LCA) is, how NETL approaches it, and walks through some examples of LCAs of carbon capture and storage on coal and natural gas power plants.

Energy Inputs for LCA

This presentation was given at the ASTM [Virtual] Workshop on Decarbonization: A Gap Analysis of LCA Standards for Industry on October 10, 2023. It discusses concerns about available life cycle data due to a lack of standards and shows how NETL has approached data development for two key areas that satisfy these concerns: electricity and natural gas.
