Portable, Controlled-Load-Rate Tension Tester

Tensile-testing machine for ceramic and foam materials has selfcontained air supply with built-in airflow controller. New machine easily moved to point of use, and loads applied automatically at constant rate of increase, without fluctuations caused by manual control of supply pressure. Eliminates impact after failure of specimen so it does not damage itself. Potential applications of machine include tensile tests of large composite parts that contain localized defects and adhesion tests of virtually any bonded structure.

Crossover Concept for Optical Printed Circuits

It is possible to reduce crosstalk between optical signals in intersecting optical conductors by taking two steps: Minimize amount of light diffracted into wrong conductor by selecting optimum conductor width, and place light traps in each conductor. How well techniques work depends in part on quality of optical conductors (partically surface smoothness) and on how closely optical-signal mode of propagation approaches ideal. Nature of signals also important: With digital signals, less crosstalk attenuation required than for analog signals.

Improved Optical Keyboard

Optical keyboard surfaces used in typewriters, computer terminals, and telephone inexpensively fabricated using stack of printed-circuit cards set in laminate. Internal laminations carry all illuminating and sensing light conductors to keys.

Negatively Coupled Inductors for Odd-Phase Choppers

Splitting windings of output inductors of negatively-coupled "boost" chopper extends applicability to odd number of phases -- including three phases. New version concatenates output inductors of each phase with those of neighboring phases achieving negative coupling effect that suppresses unwanted harmonics.
