An Optical Study of the Faint End of the Stellar Luminosity Function

We implement a new method by which to study the faint end of the field star luminosity function. The method relies on deep, multicolor photometry of fields projected against highly obscured, nearby molecular clouds. The clouds act as nearly opaque screens and delimit a well- defined survey volume which is in principle free of the problem of distinguishing nearby, intrinsically faint dwarf stars from more distant red giants. This study is based upon deep photographic and CCD photometry at optical (V,R,I) bandpasses towards the most highly obscured portions of the Taurus and Ophiuchus molecular clouds. The total volume delimited by the clouds is similar 200 pc^3. Within this region our survey is complete for all stars brighter than M_v = 16 - 17 mag; at R and I, the survey is complete down to the lowest mass stars capable of sustaining core hydrogen burning...

Far-infrared emission in the Rho Ophiuchi region - A comparison with molecular gas emission and visual extinction

The dust characteristics of a 40 arcmin x 40 arcmin section of the Rho Ophiuchi molecular clouds complex revealed by the IRAS satellite are compared with both molecular line and deep star count data for the region. The data reveal the cloud to be clearly visible at 12 and 25 microns, as well as at 60 and 100 microns. Modeling the infrared emission from the cloud as being due to two populations of dust grains, the short-wavelength emission is found not to reflect the internal structure of the molecular cloud. The 60 micron opacity determined using a single grain emission model correlates reasonably well with (C-13)O column density and visual extinction up to roughly 5 mag. The cloud edges appear to be heated by the interstellar radiation field. The far-infrared luminosity to mass ratio for the region is determined to be 0.9 solar luminosity/solar mass, a value much smaller than the average ratio for the inner Galaxy.

Extended far-infrared emission associated with mass outflows from young stars: L1551 IRS 5

Coadded IRAS survey data have been examined in the L1551 region. Extended low-surface-brightness 60 and 1200-micron emission is aligned with the molecular outflow from L1551 IRS 5. The morphology and the uniform surface brightness and color temperature of the IR emission suggest that the wind from IRS 5 is the source of this emission. It is suggested that radiative heating of grains by photons generated at the stellar wind/cloud interface is a major contributor to the extended infrared emission.
