Genuine Carbene Versus Carbene–Like Reactivity

Singlet carbenes are not always isolable and often even elude direct detection. When they escape observation, their formation can sometimes be evidenced by in-situ trapping experiments. Furthermore, is carbene-like reactivity genuine evidence of carbene formation? Herein, using the first example of a spectroscopically characterized cyclic (amino)(aryl)carbene (CAArC), we cast doubt on the most common carbene trapping reactions as sufficient proof of carbene formation.

Enhancing Substrate–Metal Catalyst Affinity via Hydrogen Bonding: Pd(II)-Catalyzed β-C(sp 3 )–H Bromination of Free Carboxylic Acids

Achieving sufficient substrate-metal catalyst affinity is a fundamental challenge for developing synthetically useful C–H activation reactions of weakly coordinating native substrates. While hydrogen bonding has been harnessed to bias site selectivity in existing C(sp 2 )–H activation reactions, the potential for designing catalysts with hydrogen bond donors (HBDs) to enhance catalyst substrate affinity, and thereby facilitate otherwise unreactive C(sp 3 )–H activation, remains to be demonstrated. Herein, we report the discovery of a ligand scaffold containing a remote amide motif that can form a favorable meta-macrocyclic hydrogen bonding interaction with the aliphatic acid substrate. The utility of this ligand scaffold is demonstrated through the development of an unprecedented C(sp 3 )–H bromination of α-tertiary and α-quaternary free carboxylic acids, which proceeds in exceedingly high mono-selectivity. Furthermore, the geometric relationship of the NHAc hydrogen bond donor and the coordinating quinoline ligand is crucial for forming the meta-macrocyclophane-like hydrogen bonding interaction, providing a guideline for the future design of catalysts employing secondary interactions.

Cyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbene ruthenium complexes for Z -stereoselective (asymmetric) olefin metathesis

The first Z-stereoselective catechodithiolate ruthenium complexes containing cyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbene ligands are reported. Isolated in nearly quantitative yields or in situ generated, these catalysts demonstrated remarkable Z selectivity (Z/E ratio up to >98/2) in ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), ring-opening-cross metathesis (ROCM) and cross-metathesis (CM). Thanks to the efficient chiral HPLC resolution of racemic CAAC-complex precursors, optically pure dithiolated complexes were also synthesized allowing to produce enantioenriched Z-ROCM products in >99/1 Z/E with good levels of enantioselectivity.

Six-coordinate ruthenium water oxidation catalysts bearing equatorial polypyridinedicarboxylato and axial phosphine ligands

Ruthenium catalysts for water oxidation combining multidentate ligands [2,2':6',2"-terpyridine]-6,6"-dicarboxylato (tda) and 2,2'-bipyridine-6,6'-dicarboxylato (bda) with apical phosphine ligands have been prepared. Here, these new complexes were fully characterized by standard spectroscopic and single-crystal X-ray crystallography analyses, and their redox properties were evaluated by electrochemistry. Specifically, [Ru II (tda)(tris(2-furyl)phosphine) 2 ] displayed two reversible redox waves that were assigned to the Ru II/III and Ru III/IV transitions, respectively. The number of turnovers in Ce IV -driven water oxidation reached 258 for the bda analog, and for the tda analog, early reaction rates were first order in initial catalyst concentration. The effects of adding fractional equivalents of Ce IV were studied using UV–vis spectroscopy. Steric and electronic changes in the axial phosphine ligand can exert their effects on the properties and catalytic activity of the resulting complexes, which may be useful when exploring other chemistry of these complexes.

(CAAC)Copper Catalysis Enables Regioselective Three-Component Carboboration of Terminal Alkynes

Here, cyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC) ligands are found to perturb regioselectivity of the copper-catalyzed carboboration of terminal alkynes, favoring the less commonly observed internal alkenylboron regiosomer through an α-selective borylcupration step. A variety of carbon electrophiles participate in the reaction, including allyl alcohols derivatives and alkyl halides. The method provides a straightforward and selective route to versatile tri-substituted alkenylboron compounds that are otherwise challenging to access.

Cyclic (Alkyl)(amino)carbene Ligands Enable Cu‐Catalyzed Markovnikov Protoboration and Protosilylation of Terminal Alkynes: A Versatile Portal to Functionalized Alkenes**

Abstract Regioselective hydrofunctionalization of alkynes represents a straightforward route to access alkenyl boronate and silane building blocks. In previously reported catalytic systems, high selectivity is achieved with a limited scope of substrates and/or reagents, with general solutions lacking. Herein, we describe a selective copper‐catalyzed Markovnikov hydrofunctionalization of terminal alkynes that is facilitated by strongly donating cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC) ligands. Using this method, both alkyl‐ and aryl‐substituted alkynes are coupled with a variety of boryl and silyl reagents with high α‐selectivity. The reaction is scalable, and the products are versatile intermediates that can participate in various downstream transformations. Preliminary mechanistic experiments shed light on the role of CAAC ligands in this process.

Cyclic (Alkyl)(amino)carbenes (CAACs) in Ruthenium Olefin Metathesis

Discovered in 2005, cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes (CAACs) have led to numerous discoveries in the field of ruthenium olefin metathesis, until then largely dominated by the well-known N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs). Compared to the latter, CAACs are simultaneously more nucleophilic (σ-donating) and electrophilic (π-accepting), which leads to very strong metal-carbene bonds. Consequently, CAAC-ruthenium complexes are very robust, which leads to enhanced catalytic activities, as exemplified by the industrially relevant ethenolysis of unsaturated fatty acids (up to of 390,000 TON). Furthermore, we provide a comprehensive overview of the impact of CAAC ligands in olefin metathesis, including results which are discribed in patents.

Furthermore, they demonstrate excellent catalytic performances in asymmetric olefin metathesis with high enantioselectivities (up to 92% ee). Preliminary mechanistic insights provided by DFT models highlight the origin of the enantioselectivity.

Realizing Metal-Free Carbene-Catalyzed Carbonylation Reactions with CO

Many organic and main group compounds, usually acids or bases, can accelerate chemical reactions when used in substoichiometric quantities, a process known as organocatalysis. In marked contrast, very few of these compounds are able to activate carbon monoxide and, until now, none of them catalyze its chemical transformation, a classical task for transition metals. In this work, we report that a stable singlet ambiphilic carbene activates CO and catalytically promotes the carbonylation of an ortho -quinone into a cyclic carbonate. These findings pave the way for the discovery of metal-free catalyzed carbonylation reactions.

The Influence of C(sp 3 )H–Selenium Interactions on the 77 Se NMR Quantification of the π‐Accepting Properties of Carbenes

Abstract Selenium NMR has become a standard tool for scaling the π‐accepting character of carbenes. Herein, we highlight that non‐classical hydrogen bonding (NCHB), likely resulting from hyperconjugation, can play a significant role in the carbene–selenium 77 Se NMR chemical shift, thus triggering a non‐linear behavior of the Se‐Scale.

Absolute Templating of M(111) Cluster Surrogates by Galvanic Exchange

The precise preparation of monodisperse nanomaterials is among the most fundamental tasks in inorganic synthesis and materials science. Achieving this goal by galvanic exchange is hardly predictable, and often results in major structural changes and polydisperse mixtures. Here, taking advantage of the enhanced stability imparted by ambiphilic carbenes, we report and rationalize the absolute templating — the complete exchange of metals in a template — of group 11 clusters across the entire coinage metal family by means of galvanic exchange. We further delineate that these species provide a molecular model for better understanding the reduction of CO 2 at M(111) coinage metal surfaces.
