Metallic and ferromagnetic carbon allotrope discovered using molecular precursors

Although carbon materials are known for their versatile structures and properties, a crystalline phase of carbon being both metallic and ferromagnetic is yet to be found. Here, using an organic molecular precursor 3,3-dimethyl-1-butene ( C 6 H 12 ) and a comprehensive theoretical study, we have discovered a metastable crystalline carbon phase that is both metallic and ferromagnetic under ambient conditions. The new carbon structures, produced by stacking puckered layers of 4,6-membered rings, are found to exhibit exotic electronic, magnetic, and mechanical properties originating from a special s p 2 − s p 3 bonding topology. These findings open the prospect of realizing the metallic and ferromagnetic carbon allotrope in practice. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Superatoms as Superior Catalysts: ZrO versus Pd

Abstract Single‐atom catalysts are the focus of studies for over a decade due to their enhanced reactivity at smaller sizes. However, they have limitations as they offer only one active site, which may not be sufficient for reactions requiring the co‐adsorption of multiple reactants. Additionally, atoms can migrate on a substrate and coalesce, resulting in decreased reactivity. Here, an alternate path, a single‐superatom catalyst is provided. Superatoms are clusters of atoms that mimic the chemistry of atoms even if they do not contain a single atom whose chemistry they mimic. Motivated by an experimental paper on the photoelectron‐spectroscopy of negatively charged ions where ZrO is found to mimic properties of a Pd atom, first the reaction of Pd and ZrO with small molecules in the gas‐phase is studied and found that ZrO not only mimics the chemistry of Pd, but is able to activate these molecules more strongly than Pd. A detailed first‐principles study of CO 2 reduction (CO 2 ‐RR) and hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) on Pd and ZrO supported on graphene, Au(111), and Cu(111) surfaces shows that superatoms are indeed superior catalysts. The ability to design numerous superatoms by varying size and composition offers a promising new paradigm for catalyst design and synthesis.

Argyrodite-type advanced lithium conductors and transport mechanisms beyond paddle-wheel effect

Abstract Development of next-generation solid-state Li-ion batteries requires not only electrolytes with high room-temperature (RT) ionic conductivities but also a fundamental understanding of the ionic transport in solids. In spite of considerable work, only a few lithium conductors are known with the highest RT ionic conductivities ~ 0.01 S/cm and the lowest activation energies ~0.2 eV. New design strategy and novel ionic conduction mechanism are needed to expand the pool of high-performance lithium conductors as well as achieve even higher RT ionic conductivities. Here, we theoretically show that lithium conductors with RT ionic conductivity over 0.1 S/cm and low activation energies ~ 0.1 eV can be achieved by incorporating cluster-dynamics into an argyrodite structure. The extraordinary superionic metrics are supported by conduction mechanism characterized as a relay between local and long-range ionic diffusions, as well as correlational dynamics beyond the paddle-wheel effect.
