Efficient and Photostable Organic Solar Cells Achieved by Alloyed Dimer Acceptors with Tailored Linker Structures

Abstract High power conversion efficiency (PCE) and long‐term stability are prerequisites for commercialization of organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein, two dimer acceptors (DYTVT and DYTCVT) are developed with different properties through linker engineering, and study their effects as alloy‐like acceptors on the photovoltaic performance and photostability of OSCs. These ternary OSCs effectively combine the advantages of both dimer acceptors. DYTVT, characterized by its high backbone planarity, ensures elevated electron mobility and high glass‐transition temperature (T g ), leading to efficient charge transport and enhanced photostability of OSCs. Conversely, DYTCVT, with its significant dipole moment and electrostatic potential, enhances compatibility of the alloy acceptors with donors and refines the blend morphology, facilitating efficient charge generation in OSCs. Consequently, D18:DYTVT:DYTCVT OSCs exhibit higher PCE (18.4%) compared to D18:MYT (monomer acceptor, PCE = 16.5%), D18:DYTVT (PCE = 17.4%), and D18:DYTCVT (PCE = 17.0%) OSCs. Furthermore, owing to higherT g of alloy acceptors (133 °C) than MYT (T g = 80 °C) and DYTCVT (T g = 120 °C), D18:DYTVT:DYTCVT OSCs have significantly higher photostability (t 80% lifetime = 4250 h under 1‐sun illumination) compared to D18:MYT (t 80% lifetime = 40 h) and D18:DYTCVT OSCs (t 80% lifetime = 2910 h).

Polythiophene-based terpolymers with modulated aggregation behaviors for high-performance organic solar cells with 16.6% efficiency

Polythiophenes (PTs) are an attractive class of polymer donors (PDs) for organic solar cells (OSCs) owing to their relatively simple structures and scalable synthesis. Herein, a series of chlorinated thiazole-incorporated PT terpolymers are designed and high-performance OSCs with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.6% are demonstrated. By incorporating two different units, 3,3'-difluoro-2,2'-bithiophene (T2F2) and thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (TT), the aggregation properties of the terpolymers (PTz-FX; X = 0, 30, 50, 70, and 100, where X represents the mole percentage of T2F2 to total T2F2 +TT) are modulated. Among the PTz-FX series, PTz-F70 is found to be the optimal P D because its suitably tuned aggregation property leads to an optimized blend morphology with well-developed crystalline structures and donor–acceptor intermixed domains. The balanced morphology not only promotes charge generation/transport but also suppresses charge recombination in OSC devices. Thus, the PTz-F70-based OSCs achieve the highest PCE (16.6%), outperforming the OSCs based on PTz-FX with extremely strong (PTz-F100, PCE = 14.7%) or weak (PTz-F0, PCE = 12.0%) aggregation properties. The PCE of the PTz-F70-based OSCs is one of the highest performances among PT-based binary OSCs. Finally, this study highlights the importance of controlling the aggregation property of PTs for achieving high-performance PT-based OSCs.

Trimerized small-molecule acceptors enable high-performance organic solar cells with high open-circuit voltage and prolonged life-time

Although the recent development of Y-series small-molecule acceptors (SMAs) has led to a dramatic increase in the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs), the operational stability (device lifetime) of OSCs is inadequate for commercialization. In this study, we develop a new trimer acceptor (TYT), consisting of three Y-based molecules linked by electron-donating spacers, to realize an OSC with high-performance (PCE > 18%) and -stability (t 80% lifetime > 8000 h under 1 sun illumination, in which t 80% lifetime is the time required for the PCE of the OSC to reach 80% of its initial value). We demonstrate that the trimerization approach affords an acceptor, TYT, with an upshifted lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy level, which, in turn, affords an efficient OSC with a high open-circuit voltage (0.964 V). In addition, the glass-transition temperature (T g ) of TYT (217 °C) is significantly higher than those of monomer (MYT, T g = 80 °C) and dimer (DYT, T g = 127 °C) acceptors, which effectively suppresses the molecular diffusion of TYT in a blend film with a polymer donor. Accordingly, a TYT-based OSC demonstrates a high PCE (18.2%) and long t 80% lifetime under 1 sun illumination (8454 h), outperforming MYT- and DYT-based OSCs that exhibit PCEs and t 80% lifetimes of 16.4% and 35 h, and 17.3% and 2551 h, respectively. Therefore, this study provides important guidelines for the design of electron acceptors in achieving OSCs with high performance and stability close to a commercial level.
