Delta wing flutter based on doublet lattice method in NASTRAN

The subsonic doublet-lattice method (DLM) aeroelastic analysis in NASTRAN was successfully applied to produce subsonic flutter boundary data in parameter space for a large delta wing configuration. Computed flow velocity and flutter frequency values as functions of air density ratio, flow Mach number, and reduced frequency are tabulated. The relevance and the meaning of the calculated results are discussed. Several input-deck problems encountered and overcome are cited with the hope that they may be helpful to NASTRAN Rigid Format 45 users.

On the field anomaly of near wakes in a collisionless plasma.

A variational approach is presented for determining the electric field induced by charge separation in the near wake of a large negatively charged body moving at mesothermal speeds in a tenuous plasma. It is shown that the presence of a potential well in the wake is due to the charge separation resulting from the unequal mass motions with which the ambient electrons and ions move into the wake.

Structure of the ionospheric disturbances about planetary entry probes

Local ionospheric disturbances which would be created by a planetary entry probe are investigated. Competing theories of spacecraft-ambient plasma interactions are used to estimate computationally the perturbations of the plasma, particularly the structure of the near wake behind planetary entry vehicles. The results have bearing on the location and operation of plasma diagnostic instrumentation aboard planetary entry vehicles. Recent estimates of Mars ionospheric properties plus vehicle dimensions and speeds similar to those of the Viking Mars Lander are used to define the parameters essential to the theory. Smaller entry bodies are also considered. Comparisons are made of the results based on the different theories for a given assumed planetary atmosphere, and also with the perturbations a similar vehicle would generate in the earth's ionosphere.
