Initial position optimization in molecular dynamics simulations for a Coulomb system

A new algorithm for molecular dynamics (MD) simulations is developed to optimize plasma particle distributions at given initial temperatures. By combining velocity scaling and reassignment, the method effectively eliminates the initial rise and oscillation in temperatures observed with randomly distributed positions. These rises and oscillations are undesired numerical artifacts observed in conventional plasma MD simulations, arising from unoptimized particle positions. The algorithm demonstrates temperature relaxation without initial rises or oscillations, as well as precise flow velocity relaxation, enabling accurate measurement of relaxation times. The code is accelerated using graphics processing units for parallel processing, enhancing the study of plasma dynamics. The proposed method for distributing physically valid particles in MD simulations enables accurate studies of intrinsic collision processes in plasmas, including the dynamics of strongly coupled plasmas, plasma–wave interactions, and transport phenomena in magnetized plasmas. The paper concludes with a discussion of potential applications and future enhancements to the algorithm.

Kinetic closures for unmagnetized and magnetized plasmas

Parallel and perpendicular closures with cyclotron resonance effects retained for the five-moment (density, temperature, and flow velocity) fluid equations are derived by solving the kinetic equation with the Bhatnagar–Gross–Krook operator in Fourier space. For parallel propagation, the parallel closures are reduced to those of Ji et al. [Phys. Plasmas 20, 082121 (2013)]. The closures when combined to the fluid equations reproduce the fully kinetic dispersion relation that can be directly derived from the kinetic equation. The closures for the five-moment fluid system can be utilized to derive closures for the extended fluid system, which is demonstrated by deriving closures for the ten-moment system consisting of density, flow velocity, temperature, and viscosity tensor equations.

Cold-hot coupled waves in a flowing magnetized plasma

Abstract Nonlinear coupling of cold and hot waves in a flowing magnetized plasma is analyzed with the Vlasov equation. An analytical solution is obtained for cold waves of a small amplitude (weak flow) and a long wavelength. The distribution function is obtained by integrating the kinetic equation along a perturbed phase-space trajectory for a time-varying plasma flow. The kinetic description presents a generalized dispersion relation that involves resonances depending on cold and hot wave dispersions. Coherent fluid motion leads to radiation peaks in addition to the cyclotron harmonics, where the wavenumber of the cold wave determines the peak frequencies. The peaks appear narrow when the wave propagates perpendicular to the time-averaged flow while they become broad due to the Doppler effect when the wave propagates parallel to the flow. Fully kinetic particle-in-cell simulations corroborate the theoretical predictions. The dispersion relation and resulting wave spectra provide information about plasma parameters and flow properties.
