Chapter 14: Heat and Mass Transfer

Fluidized beds are used in a variety of processes due to their excellent heat and mass transfer properties. Heat transfer in fluidized beds can refer to interphase heat transfer, or more commonly to bed-to-surface heat transfer. Heat transfer between bubble phase and dense phase can be characterized by an interphase heat transfer coefficient. This chapter elaborates the derivation of the interphase heat transfer coefficient by an analogy to mass transfer. Mass transfer in fluidized beds usually refers to gas-to-particle mass transfer, or interphase mass transfer, where a component migrates from particles to fluids, or vice versa. The chapter describes the two major components of the interphase mass transfer: particle and fluid mass transfer in the dense phase; and bubble- to dense-phase mass transfer.
