Tilted stripes origin in La 1.88 Sr 0.12 CuO 4 revealed by anisotropic next-nearest neighbor hopping

Spin- and charge- stripe order has been extensively studied in the superconducting cuprates, among which underdoped La 2–x Sr x CuO 4 (LSCO) is an archetype with static spin stripes at low temperatures. An intriguing, but not completely understood, phenomenon in LSCO is that the stripes are tilted away from the high-symmetry Cu-Cu directions. Using high-resolution neutron scattering on LSCO with x = 0.12, we find two coexisting phases at low temperatures, one with static spin stripes and the other with fluctuating ones, both sharing the same tilt angle. Our numerical calculations using the doped Hubbard model elucidate the tilting’s origin, attributing it to anisotropic next-nearest neighbor hopping t', consistent with the material’s slight orthorhombicity. Our results underscore the model’s success in describing specific details of the ground state of this real material and highlight the role of t' in the Hamiltonian, revealing the delicate interplay between stripes and superconductivity across theoretical and experimental contexts.

Ground-state phase diagram and superconductivity of the doped Hubbard model on six-leg square cylinders

Here, we have studied the ground state properties of Hubbard model on long six-leg square cylinders with doped hole concentration per site 5.55%≤δ≤12.5% using density-matrix renormalization group. By keeping a large number of states for long system sizes, we find that the nature of the ground state is remarkably sensitive to the presence of next-nearest-neighbor electron hopping t'. In the positive t' side, we find a robust d-wave superconducting (SC) phase characterized by coexisting quasi-long-range SC and charge density wave (CDW) correlations. Without t' the ground state forms an insulating stripe phase with long-range CDW order but short-range spin-spin and SC correlations. In stark contrast to four-leg cylinders, our results show that the lightly doped Hubbard model on six-leg cylinders remains insulating in the negative t' side where the SC correlations decay exponentially with short correlation lengths. In the larger negative t' side, the doped holes form a novel holon Wigner crystal with one doped hole per emergent unit cell and short-range spin-spin correlations.

Time-resolved X-ray Spectroscopy from the Atomic Orbital Ground State Up

X-ray spectroscopy has been a key method to determine ground and excited state properties of quantum materials with atomic specificity. Now, new x-ray facilities are opening the door to the study of pump-probe x-ray spectroscopy - specifically time-resolved x-ray absorption (trXAS) and time-resolved resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (trRIXS). In this paper we will present simulations of each of these spectroscopies using a time-domain full atomic multiplet, charge transfer Hamiltonian, adapted to study the properties of a generalized cluster model including a central transition metal ion caged by ligand atoms in a planar geometry. The numerically evaluated trXAS and trRIXS cross-sections for representative electron configurations 3d9 and 3d8 demonstrate the insights that can be obtained from charge transfer pumping, and how this nonequilibrium process affects ground and excited state properties. The straightforward characterization of the excitations in these systems, based on our analysis of the simulations, can serve as a benchmark for future experiments, as access to these time-resolved spectroscopic techniques becomes more widely available.

Charge order and superconductivity in a two-band model for infinite-layer nickelates

The recent discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates has drawn considerable attention; however, a consensus on the fundamental building blocks and common ingredients necessary to understand and describe their ground states and emergent properties is lacking. A series of experimental and theoretical studies have suggested that an effective two-band Hubbard model with Ni 3d x 2 -y 2 and rare-earth (R) 5d character may describe the low-energy physics. In this report we study the ground state properties of this two-band model on four-leg cylinders using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique to better grasp whether such a simple model can embody the essential physics. A key difference compared to single-band Hubbard materials is that the system is self-doped: even at overall half-filling, the R-band acts as an electron reservoir, hole-doping the Ni-layer and fundamentally altering the physics expected from an undoped antiferromagnet. On the four-leg cylinder, the ground state is consistent with a Luttinger liquid, with anti-phase modulations of the charge density in the Ni- and R-layers having corresponding wavevectors that lock together. Light hole doping away from 1/2 filling releases the locking between the Ni and the R charge modulations, as the electron density in the R-band decreases and eventually becomes exhausted at a hole doping concentration that depends sensitively on the effective splitting between the Ni and the R orbitals. The ground state of the doped system is consistent with a Luther-Emery liquid, possessing quasi-long-range superconducting correlations in the Ni layer, similar to the single-band Hubbard model. Our results are consistent with experimental observations and may help to reveal the microscopic mechanism for pairing and other emergent properties.

Superconducting valence bond fluid in lightly doped eight-leg $t-J$ cylinders

Superconductivity in doped quantum paramagnets has been a subject of long theoretical inquiry. In this work, we report a density matrix renormalization group study of lightly doped $t-J$ models on the finite-width square lattice (doped hole densities $δ$ = 1/12 and 1/8) with parameters for which previous studies have suggested that the undoped system in 2D is either a quantum spin liquid or a valence bond crystal. Our studies are performed on cylinders with width up to 8. Here, ground-state correlations are found to be nearly identical for the “doped quantum spin liquid” and “doped valence bond crystal.” Upon increasing the cylinder widths from 4 to 8, we observed a significant strengthening of the quasi-long-range superconducting correlations and a dramatic suppression of any “competing” charge density wave order. Extrapolating from the observed behavior of the width eight cylinders, we speculate that the system has a nodeless $d$-wave superconducting ground state in the 2D limit.

Pair density wave in the doped three-band Hubbard model on two-leg square cylinders

A pair density wave (PDW) is a superconducting (SC) state with a spatially modulated order parameter. Although much is known about the properties of the PDW state, its realization in microscopic models with divergent susceptibility has been challenging. Here, in this work, we report a density-matrix renormalization group study of a three-band Hubbard model (also known as the Emery model) for cuprates on long two-leg square cylinders. Upon light doping, we find that the ground state of the system is consistent with that of a PDW state with mutually commensurate and power-law SC, charge (CDW), and spin (SDW) density wave correlations. The SC correlations are dominant between neighboring Cu sites with d-wave pairing symmetry. Interestingly, we find that the near-neighbor interactions, especially the near-neighbor attractive V pd interaction between neighboring Cu and oxygen sites, can notably enhance the SC correlations while simultaneously suppressing the CDW correlations. For a modestly strong attractive V pd , the SC correlations become quasi-long-ranged with a divergent PDW susceptibility.

Plaquette valence bond state in the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ J 1 –J 2 XY model on the square lattice

Here, we studied the ground-state phase diagram of spin-1/2 J 1 –J 2 XY model on the square lattice with first-neighbor J 1 and second-neighbor J 2 antiferromagnetic interactions using both infinite density matrix renormalization group (iDMRG) and DMRG approaches. We show that a plaquette valence bond phase is realized in an intermediate region 0.50 ≤ J 2 /J 1 < 0.54 between a Néel magnetic ordered phase at J 2 /J 1 < 0.50 and a stripy magnetic ordered phase at J 2 /J 1 ≥ 0.54 . The plaquette valence bond phase is characterized by finite dimer orders in both the horizontal and vertical directions. Contrary to the spin-1/2 J 1 –J 2 Heisenberg model, we do not find numerical evidence for a quantum spin liquid phase in the J 1 –J 2 XY model.

Enhanced superconductivity by near-neighbor attraction in the doped extended Hubbard model

A recent experiment has unveiled an anomalously strong electron-electron attraction in the one-dimensional copper-oxide chain Ba 2–x Sr x CuO 3+δ . While the effect of the near-neighbor electron attraction V in the one-dimensional extended Hubbard chain has been examined recently, its effect in the Hubbard model beyond the one-dimensional chain remains unclear. Here, in this work, we report a density matrix renormalization group study of the extended Hubbard model on long four-leg cylinders on the square lattice. We find that the near-neighbor electron attraction V can notably enhance the long-distance superconducting correlations while simultaneously suppressing the charge-density-wave (CDW) correlations. Specifically, for a modestly strong electron attraction, the superconducting correlations become dominant over the CDW correlations with a Luttinger exponent K sc ~1 and strong divergent superconducting susceptibility. Our results provide a promising way to realize long-range superconductivity in the doped Hubbard model. The relevance of our numerical results to cuprate materials is also discussed.

Nature of quantum spin liquids of the S = 1 2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice: A parallel DMRG study

Here we study the ground-state properties of the quantum spin liquid (QSL) phases of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with nearest- (J 1 ), next-nearest- (J 2 ), and third-neighbor (J 3 ) interactions by using density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. By combining parallel DMRG with SU(2) spin rotational symmetry, we are able to obtain accurate results on large cylinders with length up to L x =48 and circumference L y =6–12. Our results suggest that the QSL phase of the J 1 -J 2 Heisenberg model is gapped which is characterized by the absence of gapless mode, short-range spin-spin and dimer-dimer correlations. In the presence of J 3 interaction, we find that a new critical QSL with a single gapless mode emerges. While both spin-spin and scalar chiral-chiral correlations are short-ranged, dimer-dimer correlations are quasi-long-ranged which decays as a power-law at long distances.

Fluctuating intertwined stripes in the strange metal regime of the Hubbard model

Strongly correlated electron systems host a variety of poorly understood correlations in their high-temperature normal state. Unlike ordered phases defined by order parameters, regions of the normal state are often defined through unconventional properties such as strange metallic transport or spectroscopic pseudogaps. Characterizing the microscopic correlations in the normal state is necessary to elucidate mechanisms that lead to these properties and their connection to ground-state orders. Here, in this paper, we establish the presence of intertwined charge and spin stripes in the strange metal normal state of the Hubbard model using determinant quantum Monte Carlo calculations. The charge and spin density waves constituting the stripes are fluctuating and short ranged; yet they obey a mutual commensurability relation and remain microscopically interlocked, as evidenced through measurements of three-point spin-spin-hole correlation functions. Our findings demonstrate the ability of many-body numerical simulations to unravel the microscopic correlations that define quantum states of matter.

High-energy spin excitations in the quantum spin liquid candidate Zn-substituted barlowite probed by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

A quantum spin liquid is a novel ground state that can support long-range entanglement between magnetic moments, resulting in exotic spin excitations involving fractionalized $S$ = $\frac{1}{2}$ spinons. Here, we measure the excitations in single crystals of the spin liquid candidate Zn-barlowite using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering. By analyzing the incident polarization and temperature dependences, we deduce a clear magnetic scattering contribution forming a broad continuum that surprisingly extends up to ~ $200$ meV (~14$J$, where $J$ is the magnetic exchange). In conclusion, the excitation spectrum reveals that significant contributions arise from multiple pairs of spinons and/or antispinons at high energies.

Spin-triplet pairing induced by near-neighbor attraction in the extended Hubbard model for cuprate chain

Abstract In quantum materials, the electronic interaction and the electron-phonon coupling are, in general, two essential ingredients, the combined impact of which may drive exotic phases. Recently, an anomalously strong electron-electron attraction, likely mediated by phonons, has been proposed in one-dimensional copper-oxide chain Ba 2− x Sr x CuO 3+ δ . Yet, it is unclear how this strong near-neighbor attraction V influences the superconductivity pairing in the system. Here we perform accurate many-body calculations to study the extended Hubbard model with on-site Coulomb repulsion U > 0 and near-neighbor attraction V < 0 that could well describe the cuprate chain and likely other similar transition-metal materials with both strong correlations and lattice effects. We find a rich quantum phase diagram containing an intriguing Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phase — besides the spin density wave and various phase separation phases — that can host dominant spin-triplet pairing correlations and divergent superconductive susceptibility. Upon doping, the spin-triplet superconducting regime can be further broadened, offering a feasible mechanism to realize p -wave superconductivity in realistic cuprate chains.

Coexistence of non-Abelian chiral spin liquid and magnetic order in a spin-1 antiferromagnet

We study the ground-state properties of a spin-1 Heisenberg model on a square lattice with the first- and second-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings $J_1$ and $J_2$ and a three-spin scalar chirality term $J_\chi$. Using the density matrix renormalization group calculation, we map out a global phase diagram including various magnetic order phases and an emergent quantum spin liquid phase. The nature of the spin liquid is identified as a bosonic non-Abelian Moore-Read state from the fingerprint of the entanglement spectra and identification of a full set of topological sectors. We further unveil a stripe magnetic order coexisting with this spin liquid. Furthermore, our results not only establish a rare example of non-Abelian spin liquids in simple spin systems but also demonstrate the coexistence of fractionalized excitations and magnetic order beyond mean-field descriptions.

Stripe order enhanced superconductivity in the Hubbard model

Unidirectional (“stripe”) charge density wave order has now been established as a ubiquitous feature in the phase diagram of the cuprate high-temperature superconductors, where it generally competes with superconductivity. Nonetheless, on theoretical grounds it has been conjectured that stripe order (or other forms of “optimal” inhomogeneity) may play an essential positive role in the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity. Here, we report density matrix renormalization group studies of the Hubbard model on long four- and six-leg cylinders, where the hopping matrix elements transverse to the long direction are periodically modulated—mimicking the effect of putative period 2 stripe order. We find that even modest amplitude modulations can enhance the long-distance superconducting correlations by many orders of magnitude and drive the system into a phase with a substantial spin gap and superconducting quasi–long-range order with a Luttinger exponent, K sc ~ 1.

Brockarchaeota, a novel archaeal phylum with unique and versatile carbon cycling pathways

Geothermal environments, such as hot springs and hydrothermal vents, are hotspots for carbon cycling and contain many poorly described microbial taxa. Here, we reconstructed 15 archaeal metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) from terrestrial hot spring sediments in China and deep-sea hydrothermal vent sediments in Guaymas Basin, Gulf of California. Phylogenetic analyses of these MAGs indicate that they form a distinct group within the TACK superphylum, and thus we propose their classification as a new phylum, ‘Brockarchaeota’, named after Thomas Brock for his seminal research in hot springs. Based on the MAG sequence information, we infer that some Brockarchaeota are uniquely capable of mediating non-methanogenic anaerobic methylotrophy, via the tetrahydrofolate methyl branch of the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway and reductive glycine pathway. The hydrothermal vent genotypes appear to be obligate fermenters of plant-derived polysaccharides that rely mostly on substrate-level phosphorylation, as they seem to lack most respiratory complexes. In contrast, hot spring lineages have alternate pathways to increase their ATP yield, including anaerobic methylotrophy of methanol and trimethylamine, and potentially use geothermally derived mercury, arsenic, or hydrogen. Their broad distribution and their apparent anaerobic metabolic versatility indicate that Brockarchaeota may occupy previously overlooked roles in anaerobic carbon cycling.

Orbital Chern Insulator and Quantum Phase Diagram of a Kagome Electron System with Half-Filled Flat Bands

In this work, we study the quantum phase diagram of electrons on kagome lattice with half-filled lowest flat bands by considering the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interaction J, and short-range Coulomb interaction V. In the weak J regime, we identify a fully spin-polarized phase. The presence of finite V drives a spontaneous chiral current, which makes the system an orbital Chern insulator by contributing an orbital magnetization. Such an out-of-plane orbital magnetization allows the presence of a Chern insulating phase independent of the spin orientation in contrast to the spin-orbit coupling induced Chern insulator that disappears with inplane ferromagnetism constrained by symmetry. Such a symmetry difference provides a criterion to distinguish the physical origin of topological responses in kagome systems. The orbital Chern insulator is robust against small coupling J. By further increasing J, we find that the ferromagnetic topological phase is suppressed, which first becomes partially polarized and then enters a nonmagnetic phase with spin and charge nematicity. The frustrated flat band allows the spin and Coulomb interaction to play an essential role in determining the quantum phases.

Topological Superconductivity in the Doped Chiral Spin Liquid on the Triangular Lattice

It has been established that the undoped, i.e., δ = 0 , system has a CSL ground state in the parameter region 0.32 ≤ J χ / J ≤ 0.56 . Upon light doping, we find that the ground state of the system is consistent with a Luther-Emery liquid with power-law superconducting and charge-density-wave correlations but short-range spin-spin correlations. In particular, the superconducting correlations, whose pairing symmetry is consistent with d ± i d wave, are dominant at all hole doping concentrations. Overall, our results provide direct evidences that doping the CSL on the triangular lattice can naturally give rise to topological superconductivity.
