Bulk high-temperature superconductivity in pressurized tetragonal La 2 PrNi 2 O 7

The Ruddlesden–Popper (R–P) bilayer nickelate, La 3 Ni 2 O 7 , was recently found to show signatures of high-temperature superconductivity (HTSC) at pressures above 14 GPa . Subsequent investigations achieved zero resistance in single-crystalline and polycrystalline samples under hydrostatic pressure conditions. Yet, obviousdiamagnetic signals, the other hallmark of superconductors, are still lacking owing to the flamentary nature with low superconducting volume fraction. The presence of a new 1313 polymorph and competing R–P phases obscured proper identification of the phase for HTSC. Thus, achieving bulk HTSC and identifying the phase at play are the most prominent tasks. Here we address these issues in the praseodymium (Pr)-doped La 2 PrNi 2 O 7 polycrystalline samples. We find that substitutions of Pr for La efectively inhibit the intergrowth of diferent R–P phases, resulting in a nearly pure bilayer structure. For La 2 PrNi 2 O 7 , pressure-induced orthorhombic to tetragonalstructural transition takes place at P c ≈ 11 GPa, above which HTSC emerges gradually on further compression. The superconducting transition temperatures at 18–20 GPa reach $T$ $^{onset}_{c}$ = $82.5$ $K$ and $T$ $^{zero}_{c}$ = $60$ $K$, which are the highest values, to our knowledge, among known nickelate superconductors. Importantly, bulk HTSC was testified by detecting clear diamagnetic signals below about 75 K with appreciable superconducting shielding volume fractions at a pressure of above 15 GPa. Further, our results not only resolve the existing controversies but also provide directions for exploring bulk HTSC in the bilayer nickelates.

Magnetic anisotropy in two-orbital models

Motivated by the recent first-principle discovery of giant perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) in Fe/III–V nitride thin films, we theoretically study magnetic crystalline anisotropy(MCA) in a series of lattices with trigonal symmetry. Due to the trigonal crystal field, MCA in these lattices is dominated by first-order perturbation of the spin–orbit coupling (SOC) in the atomic limit, instead of second-order in conventional transition metal materials. In particular, the proportionality between MCA and SOC is robust in Kagome and pyrochlore lattices due to the flat bands therein. While in triangle lattice the second-order relation is restored under the bandwidth effect. Furthermore, these findings give rise to a new understanding of magnetic anisotropy and provide a guide for the future hunting of high PMA materials.

Scaling of the strange-metal scattering in unconventional superconductors

Marked evolution of properties with minute changes in the doping level is a hallmark of the complex chemistry that governs copper oxide superconductivity as manifested in the celebrated superconducting domes and quantum criticality taking place at precise compositions. The strange-metal state, in which the resistivity varies linearly with temperature, has emerged as a central feature in the normal state of copper oxide superconductors. The ubiquity of this behaviour signals an intimate link between the scattering mechanism and superconductivity. However, a clear quantitative picture of the correlation has been lacking. In this study we report the observation of precise quantitative scaling laws among the superconducting transition temperature (T c ), the linear-in-T scattering coefficient (A 1 ) and the doping level (x) in electron-doped copper oxide La 2-x Ce x CuO 4 (LCCO). High-resolution characterization of epitaxial composition-spread films, which encompass the entire overdoped range of LCCO, has enabled us to systematically map its structural and transport properties with unprecedented accuracy and with increments of Δx = 0.0015. Additionally, we have uncovered the relations T c ~ (x c - x) 0.5 ~ (A 1 $\square$ ) 0.5 , where x c is the critical doping in which superconductivity disappears and A 1 $\square$ is the coefficient of the linear resistivity per CuO 2 plane. The striking similarity of the T c versus A 1 $\square$ relation among copper oxides, iron-based and organic superconductors may be an indication of a common mechanism of the strange-metal behaviour and unconventional superconductivity in these systems.

Manipulating the oxygen reduction reaction pathway on Pt-coordinated motifs

Electrochemical oxygen reduction could proceed via either 4e - -pathway toward maximum chemical-to-electric energy conversion or 2e - -pathway toward onsite H 2 O 2 production. Bulk Pt catalysts are known as the best monometallic materials catalyzing O 2 -to-H 2 O conversion, however, controversies on the reduction product selectivity are noted for atomic dispersed Pt catalysts. Here, we prepare a series of carbon supported Pt single atom catalyst with varied neighboring dopants and Pt site densities to investigate the local coordination environment effect on branching oxygen reduction pathway. Manipulation of 2e - or 4e - reduction pathways is demonstrated through modification of the Pt coordination environment from Pt-C to Pt-N-C and Pt-S-C, giving rise to a controlled H 2 O 2 selectivity from 23.3% to 81.4% and a turnover frequency ratio of H 2 O 2 /H 2 O from 0.30 to 2.67 at 0.4 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. Energetic analysis suggests both 2e - and 4e - pathways share a common intermediate of *OOH, Pt-C motif favors its dissociative reduction while Pt-S and Pt-N motifs prefer its direct protonation into H 2 O 2 . By taking the Pt-N-C catalyst as a stereotype, we further demonstrate that the maximum H 2 O 2 selectivity can be manipulated from 70 to 20% with increasing Pt site density, providing hints for regulating the stepwise oxygen reduction in different application scenarios.

A density-wave-like transition in the polycrystalline V 3 Sb 2 sample with bilayer kagome lattice

Recently, transition-metal-based kagome metals have aroused much research interest as a novel platform to explore exotic topological quantum phenomena. Here we report on the synthesis, structure, and physical properties of a bilayer kagome lattice compound V 3 Sb 2 . The polycrystalline V 3 Sb 2 samples were synthesized by conventional solid-state-reaction method in a sealed quartz tube at temperatures below 850 °C. Measurements of magnetic susceptibility and resistivity revealed consistently a density-wave-like transition at T dw ≈ 160 K with a large thermal hysteresis, even though some sample-dependent behaviors were observed presumably due to the different preparation conditions. Upon cooling through T dw , no strong anomaly in lattice parameters and no indication of symmetry lowering were detected in powder x-ray diffraction measurements. This transition can be suppressed completely by applying hydrostatic pressures of about 1.8 GPa, around which no sign of superconductivity was observed down to 1.5 K. Specific-heat measurements revealed a relatively large Sommerfeld coefficient γ = 18.5 mJ∙mol –1 ∙K –2 , confirming the metallic ground state with moderate electronic correlations. Density functional theory calculations indicate that V 3 Sb 2 shows a non-trivial topological crystalline property. Furthermore, our study makes V 3 Sb 2 a new candidate of metallic kagome compound to study the interplay between density-wave-order, nontrivial band topology, and possible superconductivity.

Observation of magnetic adatom-induced Majorana vortex and its hybridization with field-induced Majorana vortex in an iron-based superconductor

Braiding Majorana zero modes is essential for fault-tolerant topological quantum computing. Iron-based superconductors with nontrivial band topology have recently emerged as a surprisingly promising platform for creating distinct Majorana zero modes in magnetic vortices in a single material and at relatively high temperatures. The magnetic field-induced Abrikosov vortex lattice makes it difficult to braid a set of Majorana zero modes or to study the coupling of a Majorana doublet due to overlapping wave functions. Here we report the observation of the proposed quantum anomalous vortex with integer quantized vortex core states and the Majorana zero mode induced by magnetic Fe adatoms deposited on the surface. We observe its hybridization with a nearby field-induced Majorana vortex in iron-based superconductor FeTe 0.55 Se 0.45 . We also observe vortex-free Yu-Shiba-Rusinov bound states at the Fe adatoms with a weaker coupling to the substrate, and discover a reversible transition between Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states and Majorana zero mode by manipulating the exchange coupling strength. The dual origin of the Majorana zero modes, from magnetic adatoms and external magnetic field, provides a new single-material platform for studying their interactions and braiding in superconductors bearing topological band structures.

Electronic structure and two-band superconductivity in unconventional high- T c cuprates Ba 2 CuO 3+δ

We report that the recently discovered cuprate superconductor Ba 2 CuO 3+δ exhibits a high T c ≃73 K at δ ≃ 0.2. The polycrystal grown under high pressure has a structure similar to La 2 CuO 4 but with dramatically different lattice parameters due to the CuO 6 octahedron compression. The crystal field in the compressed Ba 2 CuO 4 leads to an inverted Cu 3d e g complex with the d x 2 -y 2 orbital sitting below the d 3z 2 - r 2 and an electronic structure highly unusual compared to the conventional cuprates. We construct a two-orbital Hubbard model for the Cu d 9 state at hole doping x = 2δ and study the orbital-dependent strong correlation and superconductivity. For the undoped case at x = 0 , we found that strong correlation drives an orbital-polarized Mott-insulating state with the spin-1/2 moment of the localized d 3z 2 - r 2 orbital. In contrast to the single-band cuprates where superconductivity is suppressed in the overdoped regime, hole doping the two-orbital Mott insulator leads to orbital-dependent correlations and the robust spin and orbital exchange interactions produce a high-T c antiphase d-wave superconductor even in the heavily doped regime at x = 0.4 . We conjecture that Ba 2 CuO 3+δ realizes mixtures of such heavily hole-doped superconducting Ba 2 CuO 4 and disordered Ba 2 CuO 3 chains in a single-layer or predominately separated bilayer structure. Our findings suggest that unconventional cuprates with liberated orbitals as doped two-band Mott insulators can be a direction for realizing high-T c superconductivity with enhanced transition temperature T c .

Orbital-selective Dirac fermions and extremely flat bands in frustrated kagome-lattice metal CoSn

Layered kagome-lattice 3d transition metals are emerging as an exciting platform to explore the frustrated lattice geometry and quantum topology. However, the typical kagome electronic bands, characterized by sets of the Dirac-like band capped by a phase-destructive flat band, have not been clearly observed, and their orbital physics are even less well investigated. Here, we present close-to-textbook kagome bands with orbital differentiation physics in CoSn, which can be well described by a minimal tight-binding model with single-orbital hopping in Co kagome lattice. The capping flat bands with bandwidth less than 0.2 eV run through the whole Brillouin zone, especially the bandwidth of the flat band of out-of-plane orbitals is less than 0.02 eV along Γ-M. The energy gap induced by spin-orbit interaction at the Dirac cone of out-of-plane orbitals is much smaller than that of in-plane orbitals, suggesting orbital-selective character of the Dirac fermions.

Fermion–boson many-body interplay in a frustrated kagome paramagnet

Kagome-nets, appearing in electronic, photonic and cold-atom systems, host frustrated fermionic and bosonic excitations. However, it is rare to find a system to study their fermion–boson many-body interplay. Here we use state-of-the-art scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy to discover unusual electronic coupling to flat-band phonons in a layered kagome paramagnet, CoSn. We image the kagome structure with unprecedented atomic resolution and observe the striking bosonic mode interacting with dispersive kagome electrons near the Fermi surface. At this mode energy, the fermionic quasi-particle dispersion exhibits a pronounced renormalization, signaling a giant coupling to bosons. Through the self-energy analysis, first-principles calculation, and a lattice vibration model, we present evidence that this mode arises from the geometrically frustrated phonon flat-band, which is the lattice bosonic analog of the kagome electron flat-band. Our findings provide the first example of kagome bosonic mode (flat-band phonon) in electronic excitations and its strong interaction with fermionic degrees of freedom in kagome-net materials.

Correlated insulating phases of twisted bilayer graphene at commensurate filling fractions: A Hartree-Fock study

Motivated by the recently observed insulating states in twisted bilayer graphene, we study the nature of the correlated insulating phases of the twisted bilayer graphene at commensurate filling fractions. Iin this work, we use the continuum model and project the Coulomb interaction onto the flat bands to study the ground states by using a Hartree-Fock approximation. In the absence of the hexagonal boron nitride substrate, the ground states are the intervalley coherence states at charge neutrality (filling $\textit{ν}$ = 0 , or four electrons per moiré cell) and at $\textit{ν}$ = –1/4 and –1/2 (three and two electrons per cell, respectively) and the $C_2\mathcal{T}$ symmetry-broken state at $\textit{ν}$ = –3/4 (one electron per cell). The hexagonal boron nitride substrate drives the ground states at all $\textit{ν}$ into $C_2\mathcal{T}$ symmetry broken-states. Our results provide good reference points for further study of the rich correlated physics in the twisted bilayer graphene.

Field-free platform for Majorana-like zero mode in superconductors with a topological surface state

Superconducting materials exhibiting topological properties are emerging as an exciting platform to realize fundamentally new excitations from topological quantum states of matter. In this letter, we explore the possibility of a field-free platform for generating Majorana zero energy excitations by depositing magnetic Fe impurities on the surface of candidate topological superconductors, LiFeAs and PbTaSe 2 . We use scanning tunneling microscopy to probe localized states induced at the Fe adatoms on the atomic scale and at sub-Kelvin temperatures. We find that each Fe adatom generates a striking zero-energy bound state inside the superconducting gap, which do not split in magnetic fields up to 8 T, underlining a nontrivial topological origin. Finally, our findings point to magnetic Fe adatoms evaporated on bulk superconductors with topological surface states for exploring Majorana zero modes and quantum information science under field-free conditions.

Effects of Surface Roughness on the Electrochemical Reduction of CO 2 over Cu

We have investigated the role of surface roughening on the CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) over Cu. The activity and product selectivity of Cu surfaces roughened by plasma pretreatment in Ar, O 2 , or N 2 were compared with that of electrochemically polished Cu samples. Differences in total and product current densities, the ratio of current densities for HER (the hydrogen evolution reaction) to CO 2 RR, and the ratio of current densities for C 2+ to C 1 products depend on the electrochemically active surface and are nearly independent of plasma composition. Theoretical analysis of an electropolished and roughened Cu surface reveals a higher fraction of undercoordinated Cu sites on the roughened surface, sites that bind CO preferentially. Roughened surfaces also contain square sites similar to those on a Cu(100) surface but with neighboring step sites, which adsorb OC-COH, a precursor to C 2+ products. Here, these findings explain the increases in the formation of oxygenates and hydrocarbons relative to CO and the ratio of oxygenates to hydrocarbons observed with increasing surface roughness.

Production of C 2 /C 3 Oxygenates from Planar Copper Nitride-Derived Mesoporous Copper via Electrochemical Reduction of CO 2

Electrochemical reduction of CO 2 provides an opportunity to produce fuels and chemicals in a carbon-neutral manner, assuming that CO 2 can be captured from the atmosphere. To do so requires efficient, selective, and stable catalysts. In this study, we report a highly mesoporous metallic Cu catalyst prepared by electrochemical reduction of thermally nitrided Cu foil. Under aqueous saturated CO 2 reduction conditions, the Cu 3 N-derived Cu electrocatalyst produces virtually no CH 4 , very little CO, and exhibits a faradaic efficiency of 68% in C 2+ products (C 2 H 4 , C 2 H 5 OH, and C 3 H 7 OH) at a current density of ~18.5 mA cm –2 and a cathode potential of -1.0 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode. Under these conditions, the catalyst produces more oxygenated products than hydrocarbons. We show that surface roughness is a good descriptor of catalytic performance. The roughest surface reached 98% CO utilization efficiency for C 2+ product formation from CO 2 reduction and the ratio of oxygenated to hydrocarbon products correlates with the degree of surface roughness. These effects of surface roughness are attributed to the high population of undercoordinated sites as well as a high pH environment within the mesopores and adjacent to the surface of the catalyst.
