Unusual electrical and magnetic properties in layered EuZn 2 As 2

Eu-based compounds often exhibit unusual magnetism, which is critical for nontrivial topological properties seen in materials such as EuCd 2 As 2 . The authors investigate the structure and physical properties of EuZn 2 As 2 through measurements of the electrical resistivity, Hall effect, magnetization, and neutron diffraction. Their data show that EuZn 2 As 2 orders antiferromagnetically with an A-type spin configuration below T N = 19 K. Surprisingly, there is strong evidence for dominant ferromagnetic fluctuations above T N , as reflected by positive Curie–Weiss temperature and extremely large negative magnetoresistance (MR) between T N and T fl ≈200 K. Furthermore, the angle dependence of the MRab indicates field-induced spin reorientation from the ab-plane to a direction ≈45° from the ab plane. Compared to EuCd 2 As 2 , the doubled T N and T fl make EuZn 2 As 2 a better platform for exploring nontrivial magnetic and electronic properties in both magnetic fluctuation (T N < T < T fl ) and ordered (T < T N ) regimes.

Magnetic structure of magnetoelectric multiferroic HoFeWO 6

The polar magnetic oxide, HoFeWO6, is synthesized, and its crystal structure, magnetic structure, and thermodynamic properties are investigated. HoFeWO 6 forms the polar crystal structure (space group Pna2 1 (#33)) due to the cation ordering of W 6+ and Fe 3+ . An antiferromagnetic transition at T N = 17 K is accompanied by a significant change in magnetic entropy with a value of ≈ 5 J kg -1 K-1 in a 70 kOe applied field. Temperature dependent neutron diffraction and magnetization data indicate that the Fe sublattice orders in a strongly non-collinear and non-coplanar arrangement below T N . The Fe ordering initially leads to induced ordering of the Ho spins such that the Ho spins also show behavior of long-range ordering that is evident from the neutron diffraction measurements. Below T ≈ 4 K, the Ho spins order independently and pull the Fe spins toward the direction of Ho spins. A comparison with the magnetic structures and corresponding ferroelectric properties of other members of RMWO 6 (R = Y, Sm-Tm, M = Cr, Fe, V) family indicate that the spontaneous polarization is due to the magnetic structure specific to the Fe sublattice through magnetoelectric coupling whereas the polarization is independent of the Ho sublattice.

Helical magnetic order and Fermi surface nesting in noncentrosymmetric ScFeGe

Here, an investigation of the structural, magnetic, thermodynamic, and charge transport properties of noncentrosymmetric hexagonal ScFeGe reveals it to be an anisotropic metal with a transition to a weak itinerant incommensurate helimagnetic state below T N =36 K. Neutron diffraction measurements discovered a temperature and field independent helical wave vector k = (0 0 0.193) with magnetic moments of 0.53 μ B per Fe confined to the ab-plane. Density functional theory calculations are consistent with these measurements and find several bands that cross the Fermi level along the c-axis with a nearly degenerate set of flat bands just above the Fermi energy. The anisotropy found in the electrical transport is reflected in the calculated Fermi surface, which consists of several warped flat sheets along the c-axis with two regions of significant nesting, one of which has a wave vector that closely matches that found in the neutron diffraction. The electronic structure calculations, along with a strong anomaly in the c-axis conductivity at TN, signal a Fermi surface driven magnetic transition, similar to that found in spin density wave materials. Magnetic fields applied in the ab-plane result in a metamagnetic transition with a threshold field of ≈ 6.7 T along with a sharp, strongly temperature dependent discontinuity and a change in sign of the magnetoresistance for in-plane currents. Thus, ScFeGe is an ideal system to investigate the effect of in-plane magnetic fields on a helimagnet with a c-axis propagation vector, where the relative strength of the magnetic interactions and anisotropies determine the topology and magnetic structure.

Crystal and magnetic structure of polar oxide HoCrWO 6

In this study, polar magnetic oxide HoCrWO 6 is synthesized and its crystal structure, magnetic structure, and thermodynamic properties are investigated. HoCrWO 6 forms the polar crystal structure (space group Pna 2 1 (#33)) due to the cation ordering of W 6+ and Cr 3+ . There is an antiferromagnetic transition at T N = 24.5 K along with the magnetic entropy change (~5 J.Kg. –1 K –1 at 70 kOe). Neutron diffraction measurement indicates that both Cr and Ho sublattices are ordered with the moment of 2.32(5)μ B and 8.7(4)μ B at 2 K, respectively. While Cr forms A-type collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure with magnetic moment along the b axis, Ho sublattice orders in a non-coplanar AFM arrangement. A comparison with isostructural DyFeWO 6 and DyCrWO 6 indicates that the magnetic structure of this family of compounds is controlled by the presence or absence of e g electrons in the transition metal sublattice.

Atomically imaged crystal structure and normal-state properties of superconducting C a 10 P t 4 A s 8 ( ( F e 1 – x P t x ) 2 A s 2 ) 5

Superconducting Ca 10 Pt 4 As 8 (Fe 2 As 2 ) 5 is rare because optimal superconducting transition temperature is achieved without chemical doping or pressure. Furthermore, the unclear crystal structure limits our ability to understand the structure-property relationship. Using atomically resolved scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction, we directly determine the structure of this superconductor: it forms a monoclinic structure (space group P 2 1 /n) with lattice parameters a = b = 8.76Å, c = 20.18Å, and γ = 90.5°. Compared with previously reported structures derived from diffraction experiments, the c-lattice constant is doubled due to alternating stacking of Pt 4 As 8 layers, which induces a high density of stacking faults. With the establishment of the crystal structure, stacking faults, and chemical composition, the distinctive normal-state electrical and thermal transport properties of our superconducting Ca 10 Pt 4 As 8 ((Fe 1–x Pt x ) 2 As 2 ) 5 (x ~ 0.05) single crystals can be explained.

Structure-property relationship in layered BaM n 2 S b 2 and B a 2 M n 3 S b 2 O 2

Layered transition-metal compounds have received great attention owing to their physical properties. In this work, we present the structural, electronic, thermal, and magnetic properties of BaMn 2 Sb 2 and Ba 2 Mn 3 Sb 2 O 2 single crystals, both with the layered structure analogous to high-temperature Cu- and Fe-based superconductors. While the Mn moment in the MnSb 4 tetrahedral environment forms a long-range G-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering in both BaMn 2 Sb 2 (T N1 ≈443K) and Ba 2 Mn 3 Sb 2 O 2 (T N1 ≈314K), a short-range AFM order is found in the intercalated MnO 2 layer at a much lower temperature (T N2 ≈60K) coexisting with long-range G-type order in MnSb 4 layer in Ba 2 Mn 3 Sb 2 O 2 . The directions of the ordered moments in these two magnetic sublattices of Ba 2 Mn 3 Sb 2 O 2 are perpendicular to each other, even though the system is electrically conductive. The G-type AFM order in MnSb 4 layers in both compounds is distinct from the stripe-like order in Fe-based superconductors, but the in-plane magnetic structure in MnO 2 layers of Ba 2 Mn 3 Sb 2 O 2 is found to be similar to that in the cuprates. Our study acknowledges the significant and distinct roles of the CuO 2 - and FeAs 4 -type transition metal layers in the structure and their magnetic and electronic properties.
