Molecular catalyst coordinatively bonded to organic semiconductors for selective light-driven CO 2 reduction in water

The selective photoreduction of CO 2 in aqueous media based on earth-abundant elements only, is today a challenging topic. Here we present the anchoring of discrete molecular catalysts on organic polymeric semiconductors via covalent bonding, generating molecular hybrid materials with well-defined active sites for CO 2 photoreduction, exclusively to CO in purely aqueous media. The molecular catalysts are based on aryl substituted Co phthalocyanines that can be coordinated by dangling pyridyl attached to a polymeric covalent triazine framework that acts as a light absorber. This generates a molecular hybrid material that efficiently and selectively achieves the photoreduction of CO 2 to CO in KHCO 3 aqueous buffer, giving high yields in the range of 22 mmol g -1 (458 μmol g -1 h -1 ) and turnover numbers above 550 in 48 h, with no deactivation and no detectable H 2 . The electron transfer mechanism for the activation of the catalyst is proposed based on the combined results from time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy, in situ spectroscopies and quantum chemical calculations.

GEOS: A performance portable multi-physics simulation framework for subsurface applications

GEOS is a simulation framework focused on solving tightly coupled multi-physics problems with an initial emphasis on subsurface reservoir applications. Currently, GEOS supports capabilities for studying carbon sequestration, geothermal energy, hydrogen storage, and related subsurface applications. The unique aspect of GEOS that differentiates it from existing reservoir simulators is the ability to simulate tightly coupled compositional flow, poromechanics, fault slip, fracture propagation, and thermal effects, etc. Extensive documentation is available on the GEOS documentation pages (GEOS Documentation, 2024). Note that GEOS, as presented here, is a complete rewrite of the previous incarnation of the GEOS referred to in (Settgast et al., 2017).

A multi-resolution approach to hydraulic fracture simulation

Abstract We present a multi-resolution approach for constructing model-based simulations of hydraulic fracturing, wherein flow through porous media is coupled with fluid-driven fracture. The approach consists of a hybrid scheme that couples a discrete crack representation in a global domain to a phase-field representation in a local subdomain near the crack tip. The multi-resolution approach addresses issues such as the computational expense of accurate hydraulic fracture simulations and the difficulties associated with reconstructing crack apertures from diffuse fracture representations. In the global domain, a coupled system of equations for displacements and pressures is considered. The crack geometry is assumed to be fixed and the displacement field is enriched with discontinuous functions. Around the crack tips in the local subdomains, phase-field sub-problems are instantiated on the fly to propagate fractures in arbitrary, mesh independent directions. The governing equations and fields in the global and local domains are approximated using a combination of finite-volume and finite element discretizations. The efficacy of the method is illustrated through various benchmark problems in hydraulic fracturing, as well as a new study of fluid-driven crack growth around a stiff inclusion.

Electrical Submersible Pumps: A System Modeling Approach for Power Quality Analysis With Variable Frequency Drives

This article proposes a high-level engineering guide to develop an integrated system model for power quality analysis in electrical submersible pump (ESP) applications with variable frequency drives (VFDs). Such analyses are troublesome in the industry due to the complexity of these systems. In this article, simple steps to perform system integration analyses of such arrangements, including torsional analysis, are developed. A simplified VFD-ESP model suitable for coupled electrical and mechanical analysis in steady state is proposed in all their configurations of practical interest. Such a model can be easily implemented in common simulation software, significantly reducing engineering efforts for implementation and analysis. The focus of the proposed model is the prediction of ESP failures that might result from a poor power quality caused by VFDs. Analytical expressions of different types of harmonics in these systems, as well as their accurate locations in the frequency domain, including their interharmonics and common-mode harmonics, are derived for this purpose. Further, the effectiveness of the proposed model is verified through offline and real-time hybrid simulation results. Finally, a comparison between simulation results obtained using the proposed model and measurements collected on a down-scale laboratory prototype is carried out to demonstrate the accuracy of the suggested modeling approach.

CHI3L1 promotes Staphylococcus aureus-induced osteomyelitis by activating p38/MAPK and Smad signaling pathways

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is the most common causative bacterial pathogen involved in promoting infection-induced osteomyelitis, a disease resulting in severe bone degradation. In this study, we aimed to identify the mechanism behind inhibition of osteoclast survival and differentiation by CHI3L1, a lectin previously reported to regulate S. aureus-induced osteomyelitis.

Mechanistic Understanding and Rational Design of Quantum Dot/Mediator Interfaces for Efficient Photon Upconversion

The semiconductor-nanocrystal-sensitized, three-component upconversion system has made great strides over the past 5 years. The three components (i.e., triplet photosensitizer, mediator, and emitter) each play critical roles in determining the input and output photon energy and overall quantum efficiency (QE). The nanocrystal photosensitizer converts the absorbed photon into singlet excitons and then triplet excitons via intersystem crossing. The mediator accepts the triplet exciton via either direct Dexter-type triplet energy transfer (TET) or sequential charge transfer (CT) while extending the exciton lifetime. Through a second triplet energy-transfer step from the mediator to the emitter, the latter is populated in its lowest excited triplet state. Triplet–triplet annihilation (TTA) between two triplet emitters generates the emitter in its bright singlet state, which then emits the upconverted photon. Quantum dots (QD) have a tunable band gap, large extinction coefficient, and small singlet–triplet energy losses compared to metal–ligand charge-transfer complexes. This high triplet exciton yield makes QDs good candidates for photosensitizers. In terms of driving triplet energy transfer, the triplet energy of the mediator should be slightly lower than the triplet exciton energy of the QD sensitizer for a downhill energy landscape with minimal energy loss. The same energy cascade is also required for the transfer from the mediator to the emitter. Lastly, the triplet energy of the emitter must be slightly larger than one-half of its singlet energy to ensure that TTA is exothermic. Optimization of the sensitizer, mediator, and emitter will lead to an increase in the anti-Stokes shift and the total quantum efficiency. Evaluating each individual step’s efficiency and kinetics is necessary for the understanding of the limiting factors in existing systems.

Enhanced intersystem crossing of boron dipyrromethene by TEMPO radical

Radical enhanced intersystem crossing (EISC) of organic chromophores is an important approach to generate a long-lived triplet state for various electronic and optoelectronic applications. However, structural factors and design rules to promote EISC are not entirely clear. In this work, we report a series of boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) derivatives covalently linked with a 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxyl (TEMPO) radical with varying distances and topologies. We show that the incorporation of the TEMPO radical to BODIPY results in strong fluorescence quenching by up to 85% as a result of EISC and enhanced internal conversion. In BDP-2AR [2-(4-methyleneamino-TEMPO) BODIPY], a dyad with the shortest BODIPY–TEMPO through-bond distance, we observe the fastest EISC rate (τ isc = 1.4 ns) and the longest triplet excited state lifetime (τ T = 32 μs) compared to other distance and geometry variations. Contrary to previous reports and a general presumption, the BODIPY–TEMPO through-bond distance in this system does not play a significant role on the triplet formation rate and yield. Finally, density functional theory suggests a folding of the TEMPO radical to form a sandwich-like structure with a BODIPY ring that leads to a decrease in the through-space distance, providing a new and an interesting insight for the radical enhanced intersystem.

A single crystal plasticity finite element formulation with embedded deformation twins

Deformation twinning is an important plastic deformation mechanism in some polycrystalline metals such as titanium and magnesium. In this paper, we present a novel crystal plasticity finite element framework that accounts for deformation twinning explicitly, in addition to crystallographic slip. Within this computational framework, deformation twins are treated as weak discontinuities embedded within individual finite elements, such that a jump in the velocity gradient field is introduced (via the discretized gradient operator) between the twinned and untwinned crystalline regions, taking into account compatibility and traction continuity conditions at the interface between these two regions. The deformation gradient is multiplicatively split into elastic and plastic parts in the untwinned region, as is customary in finite-deformation crystal plasticity formulations. A different multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient into elastic, plastic (slip), and twinning parts is adopted in the twinned region, allowing deformation twinning to be accounted for as an additional mode of plastic deformation. Here, a stochastic model is used to predict twin nucleation at grain boundaries, and the evolution of the length and thickness of the twinned region under subsequent deformation is taken into account.

Three-dimensional explicit finite element formulation for shear localization with global tracking of embedded weak discontinuities

Shear localization is a damage mechanism characterized by the concentration of plastic deformation within thin bands of materials, often observed as a precursor to failure in metals. In this study, we present a three-dimensional explicit finite element formulation with embedded weak discontinuities for the treatment of shear localization under dynamic loading conditions. In this formulation, the onset of localization is detected via a material stability analysis suitable for rate-sensitive materials, and the continuity of propagating shear bands is ensured using a global tracking strategy involving a heat-conduction type boundary value problem, solved for a scalar level set function over the global domain of the problem. In addition, we propose a modified quadrature rule that is used to compute the contribution of an individual element to the global finite element arrays, taking into account the position of the embedded shear band within that element.

Direct triplet sensitization of oligothiophene by quantum dots

Effective sensitization of triplet states is essential to many applications, including triplet–triplet annihilation based photon upconversion schemes. This work demonstrates successful triplet sensitization of a CdSe quantum dot (QD)–bound oligothiophene carboxylic acid (T6). Transient absorption spectroscopy provides direct evidence of Dexter-type triplet energy transfer from the QD to the acceptor without populating the singlet excited state or charge transfer intermediates. Analysis of T6 concentration dependent triplet formation kinetics shows that the intrinsic triplet energy transfer rate in 1 : 1 QD–T6 complexes is 0.077 ns -1 and the apparent transfer rate and efficiency can be improved by increasing the acceptor binding strength. This work demonstrates a new class of triplet acceptor molecules for QD-based upconversion systems that are more stable and tunable than the extensively studied polyacenes.

A comparative study of shear band tracking strategies in three-dimensional finite elements with embedded weak discontinuities

We present a computational framework for the treatment of shear localization in metallic materials under dynamic loading, based on the integration of a shear band tracking strategy into an explicit 3D finite element formulation with embedded weak discontinuities. Within this computational framework, an embedded shear band’s mid-surface is represented by an iso-surface of a level set function, which is obtained by solving a heatconduction type boundary value problem (BVP). The solution of this BVP is carried out either globally over the entire problem domain, or locally at the level of individual elements in the mesh. In this paper, we present a detailed comparison of these global and local algorithmic implementations of the shear band tracking strategy. Numerical results obtained using these two implementations, and using a simplified formulation without shear band tracking, are presented and compared. Moreover, we compare the computational efficiency and parallel scaling performance of the local and global implementations. This comparative study shows that both implementations can simulate the initiation of two independent shear bands and their propagation past each other without merging, whereas only the global implementation can successfully simulate the merging of two branches of a single shear band. This study also confirms that the global implementation is more computationally intensive, since it requires a global system of linear equations associated with the level set BVP to be solved at each time step. Both implementations exhibit very good scalability in domain decomposition-based parallel simulations.
