Insights into the Thermal Expansion of Amorphous Polymers

Here, we investigated the thermal expansion of amorphous polystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) homopolymers using the temperature dependence of spatial electron-density correlations. The strong and broad X-ray interference maxima arising from inter- and intramolecular correlation distances were distinct, maintaining their shape during the heating of the samples to 250 °C. Three maxima characteristic of electron density correlations between the backbones, substituents along the chain, and repeat-units were observed. A remarkable temperature dependence was identified in the largest correlation distances arising from the intermolecular interactions. Based on the temperature dependence of the correlation distances, the coefficients of molecular expansion were very close to the coefficients of thermal expansion. This study provides a simple yet accurate way to correlate macroscopic volume expansions with the molecular expansion obtained from wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) data.

Modifying Frank–Kasper Mesophases by Modulating Chain Configuration in PDMS- b -PTFEA Copolymers

The common spherical mesophases observed from chemically distinct compounds have promoted extensive studies of packing structures in soft-matter self-assemblies. In this report we present a new approach for controlling sphere-packing phases by modulating homologous copolymer chain configurations. To this end, three sets of sample pairs, compositionally asymmetric polydimethylsiloxane-b-poly(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl acrylate) (PDMS-b-PTFEA) diblock copolymers (diBCPs) and their homologues containing the corresponding triblock copolymer (triBCP), are synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization and designed with the consistent volume fractions of the core-forming PTFEA block, f PTFEA = 0.20, 0.18, and 0.15. We identify the formation of C15 and hexagonally close-packed (HCP) phases in the triBCP-containing PDMS-b-PTFEAs, whereas the sigma and C14 phases are formed in their diBCP analogues, respectively. These phase shifts into C15 and HCP, due to molecular configuration differences, reveal a significant yet unrealized role of chain configurations and the associated chain size effects in determining the stable sphere-packing phases in BCP systems.

Mesoscale Frank–Kasper Crystal Structures from Dendron Assembly by Controlling Core Apex Interactions

Single-component polymeric materials open up a great potential for self-assembly into mesoscale complex crystal structures that are known as Frank-Kasper (FK) phases. Predicting the packing structures of the soft-matter spheres, however, remains a challenge even when the molecular design is precisely known. Here, we investigate the role of the molecules' enthalpic interaction in determining the low-symmetry crystal structures. To this end, we synthesize architecturally asymmetric dendrons by varying their apex functionalities and examine the packing structures of the second-generation (G2) dendritic wedges. Our work shows that weakening the hydrogen bonding of the dendron apex makes the particles softer and smaller, and leads to the formation of various FK structures at lower temperatures, including the new observation of a FK C14 phase in the cone-shaped dendron systems. As a consequence of the free energy balance between the particle's interfacial tension and the chain's stretching, various packing structures are mainly tuned by designing the hydrogen bonding interaction.

Symmetry-breaking in double gyroid block copolymer films by non-affine distortion

Soft-matter bicontinuous networks find a double gyroid structure from block copolymer (BCP) self-assembly. A gyroid structure composed of dissimilar blocks has proven its potential as a soft crystal capable of tuning structural periodicity and symmetry, of which the lattice dimension is variable with molecular weight of the polymer. Using an asymmetric polystyrene- b -poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS- b -PMMA), in this study we show that the self-assembled gyroid films formed via a solvent vapor annealing (SVA) process undergo unique structural distortion due to directional deformation immediately upon deswelling. During the SVA process with PS- b -PMMA films, transient cylinders developed from the as-cast morphology transform into a cubic gyroid structure in a swollen state. Rapid and spontaneous deswelling processes -the manners in which the films contract along the z-direction while retaining an enlarged lateral dimension of the cubic form -lead to triclinic gyroid structures with z-directional contraction ratios ( C z ) of 2.5 and 2.0, respectively. Our X-ray analysis reveals that the deswelling process of the swollen gyroid films produces a notable symmetry-breaking in non-affine gyroid structure that elicits several forbidden reflections such as {110} and {200} reflections. For further characterization of the symmetry-breaking, we delineate the structural features of noncubic gyroid films by computing electron-density difference maps assisted with X-ray measurements. Level-set approach is accordingly developed to quantitate the structural characteristics of the maps in terms of inversion symmetry-breaking, suggesting its possible application to optical Weyl photonic crystals.
