A numerical determination of the bow shock wave in transonic axisymmetric flow about blunt bodies

A numerical method was developed for calculating axisymmetric transonic (M greater than 1) flow about a blunt body; the bow shock wave location was investigated. A Rankine-Hugoniot jump was applied at the shock while relaxation on the isentropic equation of motion was used between shock and body. The shock wave is adjusted by a Newton type iteration scheme. Results are given for a sphere in the Mach number range 1.62 down to 1.02.

Some considerations for Space Tug launch site support operations.

The study reported was undertaken to investigate the requirements placed on the Space Tug by the ground operations. On the basis of the results obtained, it will be possible to consider in future Tug systems studies the full spectrum of both ground and flight operations requirements in defining selected Tug configurations. The central core of the study consists of a functional analysis of ground operations during the Tug turnaround. Electronic system studies were initiated concurrently with the functional analysis study phase to evaluate interrelationships between ground and vehicle checkout and fault isolation capability.

Welded repairs of punctured thin-walled aluminum pressure vessels

Punctures in thin-walled aluminum pressure vessels are repaired by plugging the hole with an interference-fit disc and welding the unit. The repaired vessels withstood test pressures in excess of vessel ultimate design values for 2-, 4-, and 6-inch holes in 0.202-inch-thick aluminum alloy parent material.
