Exact formulas for multipole moments using Slater-type molecular orbitals

A triple infinite sum of formulas expressed as an expansion in Legendre polynomials is generated by use of computer algebra to represent the potential from the midpoint of two Slater-type orbitals; the charge density that determines the potential is given as the product of the two orbitals. An example using 1s orbitals shows that only a few terms are needed to obtain four-figure accuracy. Exact formulas are obtained for multipole moments by means of a careful study of expanded formulas, allowing an 'extrapolation to infinity'. This Loewdin alpha-function approach augmented by using a C matrix to characterize Slater-type orbitals can be readily generalized to all cases.

Computer-generated formulas for three-center nuclear-attraction integrals (electrostatic potential) for Slater-type orbitals

The computer-assisted C-matrix, Loewdin-alpha-function, single-center expansion method in spherical harmonics has been applied to the three-center nuclear-attraction integral (potential due to the product of separated Slater-type orbitals). Exact formulas are produced for 13 terms of an infinite series that permits evaluation to ten decimal digits of an example using 1s orbitals.

Advanced communications technologies for image processing

It is essential for image analysts to have the capability to link to remote facilities as a means of accessing both data bases and high-speed processors. This can increase productivity through enhanced data access and minimization of delays. New technology is emerging to provide the high communication data rates needed in image processing. These developments include multi-user sharing of high bandwidth (60 megabits per second) Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) satellite links, low-cost satellite ground stations, and high speed adaptive quadrature modems that allow 9600 bit per second communications over voice-grade telephone lines.

Study of communications data compression methods

A simple monochrome conditional replenishment system was extended to higher compression and to higher motion levels, by incorporating spatially adaptive quantizers and field repeating. Conditional replenishment combines intraframe and interframe compression, and both areas are investigated. The gain of conditional replenishment depends on the fraction of the image changing, since only changed parts of the image need to be transmitted. If the transmission rate is set so that only one fourth of the image can be transmitted in each field, greater change fractions will overload the system. A computer simulation was prepared which incorporated (1) field repeat of changes, (2) a variable change threshold, (3) frame repeat for high change, and (4) two mode, variable rate Hadamard intraframe quantizers. The field repeat gives 2:1 compression in moving areas without noticeable degradation. Variable change threshold allows some flexibility in dealing with varying change rates, but the threshold variation must be limited for acceptable performance.

The Karhunen-Loeve, discrete cosine, and related transforms obtained via the Hadamard transform

A general class of even/odd transforms is presented that includes the Karhunen-Loeve transform, the discrete cosine transform, the Walsh-Hadamard transform, and other familiar transforms. The more complex even/odd transforms can be computed by combining a simpler even/odd transform with a sparse matrix multiplication. A theoretical performance measure is computed for some even/odd transforms, and two image compression experiments are reported.
