Spectrum and extension of the inverse-Compton emission of the Crab Nebula from a combined Fermi -LAT and H.E.S.S. analysis

The Crab Nebula is a unique laboratory for studying the acceleration of electrons and positrons through their non-thermal radiation. Observations of very-high-energy γ rays from the Crab Nebula have provided important constraints for modelling its broadband emission. We present the first fully self-consistent analysis of the Crab Nebula’s γ-ray emission between 1 GeV and ∼100 TeV, that is, over five orders of magnitude in energy. Using the open-source software package GAMMAPY, we combined 11.4 yr of data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope and 80 h of High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) data at the event level and provide a measurement of the spatial extension of the nebula and its energy spectrum. We find evidence for a shrinking of the nebula with increasing γ-ray energy. Furthermore, we fitted several phenomenological models to the measured data, finding that none of them can fully describe the spatial extension and the spectral energy distribution at the same time. Especially the extension measured at TeV energies appears too large when compared to the X-ray emission. Our measurements probe the structure of the magnetic field between the pulsar wind termination shock and the dust torus, and we conclude that the magnetic field strength decreases with increasing distance from the pulsar. We complement our study with a careful assessment of systematic uncertainties.

Search for decaying dark matter in the Virgo cluster of galaxies with HAWC

The decay or annihilation of dark matter particles may produce a steady flux of very-high-energy gamma rays detectable above the diffuse background. Nearby clusters of galaxies provide excellent targets to search for the signatures of particle dark matter interactions. In particular, the Virgo cluster spans several degrees across the sky and can be efficiently probed with a wide field-of-view instrument. The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory, due to its wide field of view and sensitivity to gamma rays at an energy scale of 300 GeV–100 TeV is well-suited for this search. Using 2141 days of data, we search for γ -ray emission from the Virgo cluster, assuming well-motivated dark matter substructure models. Our results provide some of the strongest constraints on the decay lifetime of dark matter for masses above 10 TeV. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

An optimized search for dark matter in the galactic halo with HAWC

The Galactic Halo is a key target for indirect dark matter detection. The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory is a high-energy (~300 GeV to >100 TeV) gamma-ray detector located in central Mexico. HAWC operates via the water Cherenkov technique and has both a wide field of view of ~ 2 sr and a >95% duty cycle, making it ideal for analyses of highly extended sources. We made use of these properties of HAWC and a new background-estimation technique optimized for extended sources to probe a large region of the Galactic Halo for dark matter signals. With this approach, we set improved constraints on dark matter annihilation and decay between masses of 10 and 100 TeV. Due to the large spatial extent of the HAWC field of view, these constraints are robust against uncertainties in the Galactic dark matter spatial profile.

Magnetic moments of charmed baryons. I, II

The magnetic moments of all charmed baryons belonging to the totally symmetric 20 (underlined) representation, the mixed symmetry 20 prime (underlined) and the totally antisymmetric 4 (underlined) representation have been compared under U(4) symmetry, assuming that the magnetic-moment operator is proportional to the charge operator. The magnetic moments of all charmed particles have been expressed in terms of the moments of proton, neutron and delta particles in the case of U(4) symmetry. Then assuming that the magnetic moment operator is a tensor transforming as the (15,3) members of a 63 (underlined) representation of U(8) or SU(8), the magnetic moments of all the baryons belonging to the 120 (underlined) representation are compared.

Callan-Symanzik equation in Bronzan-Lee model

Considering the renormalized U-particle propagator of the Bronzan-Lee (1965) model as a function of energy, the Callan-Symanzik (1970) equations are derived for various amplitudes. The varied parameters include the renormalized U-particle mass and the renormalized U-V-theta coupling constant. Following Adler's (1972) technique, the Gell-Mann-Low (1954) equation is derived for vanishing V-, N- and theta-particle masses. This leads to a consistency relation that is valid for high energy. Consequences of the consistency relation are discussed.
