International Interlaboratory Compilation of Trace Element Concentrations in the CUP-2 Uranium Ore Concentrate Standard

The accurate and precise analysis of impurities in uranium ore concentrates is an important aspect of nuclear forensics. Defensibility of analytical data requires the use of analytical reference materials as part of quality control. This report presents a compilation of the results of trace element concentration measurements of the CUP-2 Uranium Ore Concentration Standard from 11 different laboratories. Various dissolution methods, instrumental platforms, and analytical methods were employed. The resulting data set contains concentration of 66 impurities with up to 139 individual data points for each impurity. Consensus values have been assigned to each impurity following a statistical analysis of the data set.

Isotopic Hg in an Allende carbon-rich residue

A carbon-rich residue from Allende subjected to stepwise heating yielded two isotopically resolvable types of Hg: one with an (Hg-196)/(Hg-202) concentration ratio the same as terrestrial (monitor) Hg; the other enriched in Hg-196 relative to Hg-202 by about 60 percent. Hg with the 202 isotope enriched relative to 196, as is found in bulk Allende, was not observed. Whether the result of mass fractionation or nucleosynthesis, the distinct types of Hg entered different carrier phases and were not thermally mobilized since the accretion of the Allende parent body.

The thermal release of Hg from chondrites and their thermal histories

A quantitative treatment and implications of isothermal and linear heating data on Hg in meteorites are given as a sequel to a more qualitative analysis of meteorite thermal histories (Reed and Jovanovic, 1968). Studies of Hg in terrestrial metamorphic rocks establish that thermal events to which meteorites were subjected fall in the same temperature range, of 400-900 C, as exists during terrestrial metamorphism. Hg diffusion parameters based on data from the linear and isothermal heating experiments are calculated. The conclusions are: (1) Meteorites experienced thermal events of the same magnitude as those measured by primarily mineralogical metamorphic indicators reviewed by Dodd (1969); (2) no correspondence with mineralogical-petrological metamorphic grade is evident; (3) Hg data for some chondrites correlate with shock facies (non-thermal) indicators (Dodd and Jarosewich, 1979); (4) small Hg activation energies (6-14 kcal/mole) require that the meteorites must have been stored in closed systems until low temperatures were attained. Hg must be presented as an involatile mineral(s) or as a substituent in a host phase at temperatures below 100 C. Consistent with this interpretation is the fact that despite diffusion times of 100-1,000,000 years at 200 K, Hg was retained in small objects over cosmic ray exposure periods of a hundred-million years.

The role of phosphorus in lunar samples - A chemical study

Phases rapidly dissolved by pH1 HNO3 acid are found in up to 60% of the REE, P, U, and halogens in basalt 75055, basalt mineral separates, KREEP-rich breccia 14312, and components from highland breccia 66095. This suggests that they may be phosphates. The 0.1 M HNO3 soluble fractions from whole rock breccias 14312 and 66095, and 60095 matrix, and a melt rock clast, have similar REE patterns. This implies that the same major REE-bearing phase is common to all the samples. The postleach residues contain REE in other phases. The acid-soluble phases associated with separated minerals from 75055 are depleted in REE relative to P, and also relative to REE and P in the bulk igneous rock. This may be interpreted as partitioning of REE present at grain surfaces into the major minerals.

Aspects of the history of 66095 based on trace elements in clasts and whole rock

Halogens, P, U and Na are reported in anorthositic and basaltic clasts and matrix from rusty rock 66095. Large fractions of Cl and Br associated with the separated phases from 66095 are soluble in H2O. Up to two orders of magnitude variation in concentrations of these elements in the breccia components and varying H2O-soluble Cl/Br ratios indicate different sources of volatiles. An approximately constant ratio of the H2O- to 0.1 M HNO3-soluble Br in the various components suggests no appreciable alteration in the original distributions of this element in the breccia forming processes. Up to 50% or more of the phosphorus and of the non-H2O-soluble Cl was dissolved from most of the breccia components by 0.1 M HNO3. Clast and matrix residues from the leaching steps contain, in most cases, the Cl/P2O5 ratio found in 66095 whole rock and in a number of other Apollo 16 samples. Evidence that phosphates are the major P-phases in the breccia is based on the 0.1 M acid solubility of Cl and P in the matrix sample and on elemental concentrations which are consistent with those of KREEP.

Hg and Pt-metals in meteorite carbon-rich residues - Suggestions for possible host phase for Hg

Carbon-rich and oxide residual phases have been isolated from Allende and Murchison by acid demineralization for the determination of their Hg, Pt-metal, Cr, Sc, Co, and Fe contents. Experimental procedures used eliminated the possibility of exogenous and endogenous contaminant trace elements from coprecipitating with the residues. Large enrichments of Hg and Pt-metals were found in Allende but not in Murchison residues. Hg-release profiles from stepwise heating experiments suggest a sulfide as the host for Hg. Diffusion calculations for Hg based on these experiments indicate an activation energy of 7-8 kcal/mol, the same as that for Hg in troilite from an iron meteorite. This is further support for a sulfide host phase for Hg. Equilibration of Hg with this phase at approximately 900 K is indicated. Reasons for the presence of Pt-metals in noncosmic relative abundances are explored.

Cl, P2O5, U and Br associated with mineral separates from a low and a high Ti mare basalt

Low Ti basalt 12040 and high Ti basalt 75055 have approximately the same Cl/P2O5 ratio; the Cl is that remaining after a hot water leach. Pyroxene, plagioclase and ilmenite minerals separated from the basalts also tend to have this same Cl/P2O5 ratio. This is evidence that these major minerals do not control the ratio since Cl and P would not be expected to partition to the same extent into each mineral. Olivine appears to be a special case. It is proposed that the grains measured contained inclusions with leachable and P2O5-related Cl. Dilute acid leaches of whole rock and separated minerals have the same or nearly the same Cl/P2O5 ratios as the residual samples. Apatite and whitlockite were probably the phases leached. They must be constituents of the mesostasis and are present as microminerals or coatings on major mineral grains. The acid leach results imply little or no partition of Cl and P2O5 into major minerals.

Regolith layering processes based on studies of low-temperature volatile elements in Apollo core samples

The concentrations of Hg released at at the most 130 C increase with depth in near-surface samples from cores. This is in response to a daytime thermal gradient with temperatures of approximately 400 K at the surface decreasing to approximately 250 K at greater than 10 cm depth (Keihm and Langseth, 1973). The steepness of the slopes and the depths to which the concentration gradients extend appear to be determined by the color, density and possibly the grain size of the soils. Earlier surface layers can be identified and, in general, are in agreement with other indicators of such layers. Low temperature volatilized Br exhibits trends that parallel those of Hg in a number of cases. This is also true of Br and Hg fractions released in stepwise heating experiments at higher temperatures. The coherence, especially in higher temperature fractions, between these chemically dissimilar elements implies a common physical process of entrapment; possibly one related to the presence of vapor deposits on surfaces and to opening and closing of microcracks and pores.

Near-surface daytime thermal conductivity in the lunar regolith

If mass and heat transport properties in the top few cm of the lunar surface correspond, estimates of the daytime thermal conductivity based on the diffusivity calculated from in situ concentration gradients of low temperature volatile elements should be possible. Concentration gradients of Hg and Br in response to the diurnal heat pulse have been measured in samples from cores. The conductivity estimated is either approximately 10 to the -3rd or approximately 2 x 10 to the -4th W/cm-degrees K depending on the assumptions made. The latter value is in agreement with near-surface daytime thermal properties calculated by Keihm et al. (1973) to explain the mean surface temperature. An activation energy for diffusion of Hg in the top few cm of the lunar surface is estimated to be approximately 8 kcal/mole and suggests either vapor or surface migration. Fixation of the concentration gradient after the cores were extracted may be due to lack of a temperature gradient to act as a driving force or to disruption of grain contacts or their corrosion on exposure to air.

Luna 24 origins - Some trace element constraints

Luna 24 basaltic material originated in the particular volume of the lunar crust that produced Apollo 11 and Luna 16 basaltic material; it has the same Clr/P2O5 (r = residual) signature. Ru-Os contents (Barsukov et al., 1977) and a number of radiogenic age measurements place Luna 24 basalt origins stratigraphically in a layer between those from which Apollo 15 and Apollo 11 and 17 basalts were derived.

Trace element evidence for a laterally inhomogeneous moon

A number of trace element interrelationships support the concept of a laterally inhomogeneous moon based originally on Clr/P2O5 ratios. The correspondence between Clr/P2O3 and Rb/Sr ratios in basalts are of special interest since the isotropic evolution of the latter pair of elements relates to the earliest history of the moon. This implies the times when the Clr/P2O5 relationships were established. The early magma ocean is conjectured to have been made up of non-intermixing seas resulting either from large convection cells or large body accretion. These mutually exclusive regions could be lunar geological provinces. It is proposed that the diversity of basalts from the Apollo 17 site is related to the lateral inhomogeneity of the moon. Ca/Na ratios in basalts show a trend which parallels that of Ru/Os and in a corresponding fashion may serve as a depth indicator.

Primordial Pb, radiogenic Pb and lunar soil maturation

Pb-204 is directly correlated with the reduced Fe measured by ferromagnetic resonance. A similar correlation has been noted for hydrolyzable carbon (Pillinger et al., 1974). An enrichment of these elements appears to have occurred during soil maturation. In contrast to Pb-204, radiogenic Pb is reported to be lost during soil maturation (Church et al., 1976). Radiogenic Pb is present in mineral grains and may be lost by solar wind sputtering (or volatilization) and not resupplied. Pb-204 coating grain surfaces acts as a reservoir to provide the Pb-204 being extracted in the reduced Fe formation process. Venting or some other volatile release mechanism may replenish the surface-related Pb-204.

Volatile metal deposits on lunar soils: Relation to volcanism

Parallel leaching and volatilization experiments conducted on lunar samples and similar experiments on sphalerite do not supply the information needed to resolve the question of the chemical nature of pb 204, Zn, Bi and Tl deposits on lunar soil surfaces. It is proposed that in Apollo 17 mare and terra soils and fractions of pb 204, Zn and Tl that are insoluble under mild, hot pH 5HNO3, leaching conditions and involatile at 600 C were originally surface deposits which became immobilized by migration into the silicate substrate or by chemisorption. Only Bi is predominantly indigenous. The implication is also that the soils over their respective times of evolution were exposed to heavy metal vapors or that an episodic exposure occurred after they had evolved. A sequence of events is proposed to account for orange 74220 and black 74001 glasses by lava fountaining and for soil 74241 as tephra from an explosive volcanic eruption.

Trace element geochemistry and the early lunar differentiation

The results are considered of experiments in which thermal neutron activation analysis was used to measure the halogens, U, Te, Ru, Os, and Hg in lunar samples. A calorimetric method was used for P2O5. Three Apollo 17 basalts, one Apollo 11 basalt, and one Apollo 15 basalt were used for the Ru-Os study. Os and Ru were measured in seven samples of breccia 14305 in a series of experiments to check an apparent anomaly in the isotopic composition of the Hg which it contains. A lunar model for Ru-Os partition is discussed. It is suggested that Ru and Os were partitioned and fractionated in the original differentiation of the lunar surface ocean. Fractionation among near-surface materials was less than a factor of 2 according to the lithic breccia data. Fractionations among basaltic sources were very large, exceeding 100, and primarily due to Ru. A clue to Ru and Os distributions at the depths from which mare basalts were derived may be provided by the relative ages of the basalts. These are interpreted as being related to partial melting in response to temperature increases at depth with time.

Convection cells in the early lunar magma ocean - Trace-element evidence

A method was proposed for recognizing suites of samples which are related to the differentiation of distinct and regionally separated magmas in the early lunar surface ocean. The sample suites were identified by three Cl-P2O5 compositional groups. New experimental data continue to add samples to these groups. Each magma was associated with a convection cell the boundaries of which are proposed. Independent geochemical evidence supporting a limited number of early magmas is cited. Two new possible Cl-P2O5 groups are identified. Samples not indigenous to a given site and their possible source regions are identified. It is proposed that many Apollo 17 basalts are not locally derived.
