VA EDH Data Curation Documentation FY24-Q4

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) places the health and well-being of our nation’s veterans as its top priority. VA is dedicated to offering timely access to high-quality, evidence-based mental health care that meets the needs of veterans and supports their reintegration into society. One of our core missions is to prevent suicide among veterans through innovative approaches and resources. Health outcomes, including suicide, are typically influenced by both genetics and environmental factors, such as air quality, transportation access, food availability, homelessness, and more. Mental health outcomes are associated with various stressors across socioeconomic, economic, and physical environments. Analyzing the connections between these stressors, covariates, and health outcomes relies on standardized data, which can be integrated into models like the VA’s Recovery Engagement and Coordination for Health, Veterans Enhanced Treatment (REACH VET). The World Health Organization (WHO) defines Environmental Determinants of Health (EDH) as factors like clean air, stable climate, water and sanitation, chemical safety, radiation protection, safe workplaces, sustainable agriculture, healthy urban environments, and nature preservation, all of which are crucial for good health.

LUCID Thrust 1 - Dataset Identification and Biodata Catalog Creation

The LUCID DOE consortium, part of the Department of Energy’s Biological and Environmental Research (BER) program, advances Low Dose Radiation (LDR) research through multidisciplinary efforts across seven key thrusts. This document focuses on Thrust 1, which centers on the creation of curated multimodal population health datasets and supports broader efforts within the LUCID program, including AI-based hypothesis generation, experimental design, and the study of LDR-induced health risks. Specifically, it describes the identification and cataloging of Thrust 1’s curated LDR datasets and biodata, emphasizing their critical role in supporting various research thrusts within the consortium, with potential applications in healthcare and public policy. In addition, the document includes an evaluation of three Large Language Models (LLMs)—GPT-4, SOLAR-10B, and Mixtral-8x7B—based on their ability to extract features from 25 LDR studies. The results indicate that GPT-4 performed the best, while Mixtral-8x7B demonstrated limited knowledge. Overall, this work advances understanding in radiation protection, risk assessment, and medical treatments, while providing valuable resources for researchers, educators, and policymakers.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Strategic Research and Development Insights for Digital Twins

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is pleased to provide our response to the NITRD RFI on Digital Twins Research and Development. Digital twins are virtual representations of physical systems, leveraging real-time data to simulate and predict behaviors. ORNL is advancing digital twin technology across various disciplines, including neutron scattering, networking, science ecosystems, supercomputing, secure facilities, mobility technologies, materials design and discovery, power systems, fusion reactors, biological sciences, and earth observation. These efforts aim to enhance scientific research, operational efficiency, and decision-making processes. ORNL facilities, such as the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), Grid-C, Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), and Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF), provide the infrastructure to develop and demonstrate these digital twin technologies. In this document, we lay out key challenges, research gaps, and future opportunities based on our experience with digital twins that aim to serve as useful contributions towards a National Digital Twins R&D Strategic Plan. In the remaining document, we address nine of the thirteen topic areas specified in the RFI.
