Bilinear modeling and state estimation of slew-induced deformations of a flexible multibody system

A model of the nonlinear dynamics of a deformable maneuvering multibody system is described, whereby elastic deformations are modeled by restoring forces and dissipative forces at point mass appendages. This model is brought into bilinear form. Estimation of deformations occasioned by rapid slewing maneuvers is carried out by a filter based on a globally equivalent linear model of the bilinear dynamics, and is shown to be an improvement over the extended Kalman filter. To further alleviate the computational burden, the estimated deformation state is propagated between observations by a low dimensional operator spline interpolator of bilinear system Volterra series, which is easily implemented.

Robust tracking of a flexible spacecraft subject to induced disturbances and parametric uncertainties

A variable structure control technique combined with an operator spline for bilinear systems is implemented to a fast moving deformable structure for purposes of achieving robust tracking performance. The control torque applied to the structure is based on estimates of the structure parameters and on upper bounds of the model errors. For a rapid rotation of the deformable structure, the elastic response can be modeled by oscillators driven by angular acceleration, where stiffness and damping coefficients are also angular velocity and acceleration dependent. By transforming this 'slew-driven' elastic dynamics into a bilinear form, an operator spline can be constructed, that gives a low order estimate of the induced disturbance. An upper bound between the estimated deformation and the unknown exact deformation is also generated, which can be used where required in the sliding control correction.

Application of the operator spline technique to nonlinear estimation and control of moving elastic systems

A bilinear model of the vibrational dynamics of a deformable maneuvering body is described. Estimates of the deformation state are generated through a low dimensional operator spline interpolator of bilinear systems combined with a feedback linearized based observer. Upper bounds on error estimates are also generated through the operator spline, and potential application to shaping control purposes is highlighted.

Bilinear modeling and nonlinear estimation

New methods are illustrated for online nonlinear estimation applied to the lateral deflection of an elastic beam on board measurements of angular rates and angular accelerations. The development of the filter equations, together with practical issues of their numerical solution as developed from global linearization by nonlinear output injection are contrasted with the usual method of the extended Kalman filter (EKF). It is shown how nonlinear estimation due to gyroscopic coupling can be implemented as an adaptive covariance filter using off-the-shelf Kalman filter algorithms. The effect of the global linearization by nonlinear output injection is to introduce a change of coordinates in which only the process noise covariance is to be updated in online implementation. This is in contrast to the computational approach which arises in EKF methods arising by local linearization with respect to the current conditional mean. Processing refinements for nonlinear estimation based on optimal, nonlinear interpolation between observations are also highlighted. In these methods the extrapolation of the process dynamics between measurement updates is obtained by replacing a transition matrix with an operator spline that is optimized off-line from responses to selected test inputs.

Nonlinear modeling, identification and estimation of slew induced structural deformation

This proposal discusses a new nonlinear, nonparametric method for off-line modeling and on-line estimation of the deformation of a flexible structure undergoing rapid retargeting maneuvers. In these circumstances, the structural stiffness and damping coefficients depend on the angular acceleration omega(dot), the angular rate omega, and the square of the angular rate omega. In the single axis case, the excitation of the structure is represented by the vector u(exp T) = (omega(dot), omega(exp 2), 2(omega)), to which the structural dynamics responds as a 'bilinear' (i.e., parametrically excited) system. A similar technique for multiaxial rotations yields a bilinear model with respect to matrix valued excitations. Three methods of estimation and modeling are described in this proposal to achieve deformation state determination: (1) a method based on a feedback linearized procedure which gives an estimate of the state by means of observers installed in the deformable body; (2) off-line modeling of the deformation state of the structure by means of topological interpolators; and (3) an on-line structural state estimation method based on a combination of the two previous techniques.
