Teaching engineering ethics: a new approach
This paper describes The Ethics Challenge and how it can be used to teach engineering ethics in any engineering program.
Parallel Optimization of an Earth System Model (100 Gigaflops and Beyond?)
We are developing an Earth System Model (ESM) to be used in research aimed to better understand the interactions between the components of the Earth System and to eventually predict their variations. Currently, our ESM includes models of the atmosphere, oceans and the important chemical tracers therein.
Identification of HgO/x/ species by matrix isolation spectroscopy
The condensation of Hg atoms in an ozone-doped argon matrix gas with irradiation from a medium-pressure mercury arc lamp at 10 K resulted in the formation of several trapped HgO(x) species. Tentative identification of HgO has been made from absorption bands appearing in the visible and IR regions of the spectrum based on (O-16)2 and (O-18)2 isotope studies. The following spectroscopic constants were obtained: nu(00) = 14634 cm, nu(1) = 548 cm, and nu(11) = 676 cm. Some qualitative evidence was obtained for the existence of HgO2.
Aerospect operations criteria for Mercury thresholds
The hazards anticipated from a large scale mercury spill during a possible failure in the preflight and early flight stages of the Space Shuttle were studied. Toxicity thresholds were investigated as well as other consequences of mercury interacting with the environment. Three sites of mercury spill were investigated: land, water, and atmosphere. A laboratory study of interactions between mercury vapor and ozone in a low pressure, high ultraviolet radiation environment approximated the conditions of a mercury vapor release in the ozone layer region of the stratosphere. Clear evidence of an interaction leading to the destruction of ozone by conversion to oxygen was obtained. The impact of a spill on the Earth's environment and methods of early detection of a developing hazard wave of primary concern in the study.
Integrated circuit random-access memory decoder
Decoder circuit with complementary-symmetry circuit configuration composed of MOS and n-p-n bipolar devices minimizes power consumption. Emitter-follower drive scheme results in low power dissipation and high speed operation.
Low-power integrated-circuit driver for ferrite-memory word lines
Composite circuit uses both n-p-n bipolar and p-channel MOS transistors /BIMOS/. The BIMOS driver provides 1/ ease of integrated circuit construction, 2/ low standby power consumption, 3/ bidirectional current pulses, and 4/ current-pulse amplitudes and rise times independent of active device parameters.

Ultrasonic Observation of the Calcite-Aragonite Transition
Elastic-wave velocities were measured as a function of pressure by ultrasonic pulse Interferometry in Solenhofen and Manilus limestone specimens to pressures of 27 and 38 kb. Longitudinal velocities decrease sharply from 5.3 km/sec at a mean pressure of 4 kb to a minimum of 4.8 km/sec at 8 kb. Transverse velocities decrease from 3.1 to 2.9 km/sec. At the minimum bulk and rigidity moduli are 25 and 20 per cent below their 4-kb values. A density increase of 1.7 per cent is associated with this minimum. The observed effects are attributed to the calcite-aragonite transition, and they may be due to an inherent property of the material, a component of which undergoes a polymorphic transition, the low- and high-pressure phases coexisting over a considerable pressure range. This may be an additional mechanism to account for low-velocity zones in the earth?s interior.
