STI Architectural Framework Working Group

A general overview of the architecture developed for the NASA scientific and technical information (STI) modernization plan is presented. The value of standardization as a technique to reduce life cycle costs, to facilitate interoperability and scalability and to simplify the management process is explained. Definitions for both de facto and de jure standards follow with emphasis on government and industrial standards. The methodology applied in developing the STI architecture is described.

NASA STI modernization plan

The NASA Scientific and Technical Information (STI) modernization plan is described as a phased approach to a shared network environment. The plan is based on end user needs articulated in continuing user studies in addition to technical requirements. The modernization phases are outlined in a chronology covering the 1993-1997 time frame. Various challenges and constraints are discussed. Emphasis is placed on sustaining user involvement and meeting user needs in measurable ways as the development of the system architecture proceeds.

Multimedia

Multimedia initiative objectives for the NASA Scientific and Technical Information (STI) program are described. A multimedia classification scheme was developed and the types of non-print media currently in use are inventoried. The NASA STI Program multimedia initiative is driven by a changing user population and technical requirements in the areas of publications, dissemination, and user and management support.

NASA scientific and technical information program multimedia initiative

This paper relates the experiences of the NASA Scientific and Technical Information Program in introducing multimedia within the STI Program framework. A discussion of multimedia technology is included to provide context for the STI Program effort. The STI Program's Multimedia Initiative is discussed in detail. Parallels and differences between multimedia and traditional information systems project development are highlighted. Challenges faced by the program in initiating its multimedia project are summarized along with lessons learned. The paper concludes with a synopsis of the benefits the program hopes to provide its users through the introduction of multimedia illustrated by examples of successful multimedia projects.
