Signatures of Weyl Fermion Annihilation in a Correlated Kagome Magnet

The manipulation of topological states in quantum matter is an essential pursuit of fundamental physics and next-generation quantum technology. Here we report the magnetic manipulation of Weyl fermions in the kagome spin-orbit semimetal Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 , observed by high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy. We demonstrate the exchange collapse of spin-orbit-gapped ferromagnetic Weyl loops into paramagnetic Dirac loops under suppression of the magnetic order. We further observe that topological Fermi arcs disappear in the paramagnetic phase, suggesting the annihilation of exchange-split Weyl points. In conclusion, our findings indicate that magnetic exchange collapse naturally drives Weyl fermion annihilation, opening new opportunities for engineering topology under correlated order parameters.

Emergent flat band electronic structure in a VSe 2 /Bi 2 Se 3 heterostructure

Flat band electronic states are proposed to be a fundamental tool to achieve various quantum states of matter at higher temperatures due to the enhanced electronic correlations. However, materials with such peculiar electronic states are rare and often rely on subtle properties of the band structures. Here, by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we show the emergent flat band in a VSe 2 / Bi 2 Se 3 heterostructure. Our photoemission study demonstrates that the flat band covers the entire Brillouin zone and exhibits 2D nature with a complex circular dichroism. In addition, the Dirac cone of Bi 2 Se 3 is not reshaped by the flat band even though they overlap in proximity of the Dirac point. These features make this flat band distinguishable from the ones previously found. Thereby, the observation of a flat band in the VSe 2 / Bi 2 Se 3 heterostructure opens a promising pathway to realize strongly correlated quantum effects in topological materials.

A comprehensive ARPES study on the type-II Dirac semimetal candidate Ir 1-x Pt x Te 2

The transition metal dichalcogenide Ir 1-x Pt x Te 2 displays both superconductivity and a topological band structure. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we obtain a comprehensive understanding of the three-dimensional electronic structure in the normal state of Ir 1-x Pt x Te 2 for doping levels from x = 0.1 to 0.4, which spans the composition range of a superconducting state to a non-superconducting state. Many features of the electronic structure can be attributed to strong Te–Te interactions between the layers of the layered crystal structure and can be resolved by photon energy dependent measurements. We demonstrate that the type-II Dirac fermions can be successfully tuned via Pt doping, where the Dirac point lies close to the Fermi level for x = 0.1. The band evolution vs doping provides a clearer understanding of the relationship between the superconductivity and electronic structure. In addition, the β band in the superconducting samples locates the system close to a type-II van Hove singularity, where spin triplet paring symmetry has been predicted. Our results provide a comprehensive understanding of the band structure of Ir 1-x Pt x Te 2 , and we discuss the possibilities of the existence of topological superconductivity in this system.

Dirac fermions and flat bands in the ideal kagome metal FeSn

A kagome lattice of 3d transition metal ions is a versatile platform for correlated topological phases hosting symmetry-protected electronic excitations and magnetic ground states. However, the paradigmatic states of the idealized two-dimensional kagome lattice-Dirac fermions and flat bands-have not been simultaneously observed. Here, we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and de Haas-van Alphen quantum oscillations to reveal coexisting surface and bulk Dirac fermions as well as flat bands in the antiferromagnetic kagome metal FeSn, which has spatially decoupled kagome planes. Our band structure calculations and matrix element simulations demonstrate that the bulk Dirac bands arise from in-plane localized Fe-3d orbitals, and evidence that the coexisting Dirac surface state realizes a rare example of fully spin-polarized two-dimensional Dirac fermions due to spin-layer locking in FeSn. Finally, the prospect to harness these prototypical excitations in a kagome lattice is a frontier of great promise at the confluence of topology, magnetism and strongly correlated physics.

Second derivative analysis and alternative data filters for multi-dimensional spectroscopies: A Fourier-space perspective

The second derivative image (SDI) method is uniformly applied to sharpen dispersive data features in multi-dimensional spectroscopies such as angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). In this work, the SDI function is represented in Fourier space, where it has the form of a multi-band pass filter. The interplay of the SDI procedure with undesirable noise and background features in ARPES data sets is reviewed, and it is shown that final image quality can be improved by eliminating higher Fourier harmonics of the SDI filter. Furthermore, we discuss extensions of SDI-like band pass filters to higher dimensional data sets, and how one can create even more effective filters with some a priori knowledge of the spectral features.
