Charge density wave order, local lattice distortions, and topological electronic states in Nb Te 4

Assessing the atomic and electronic structure of strongly correlated systems in which the crystal symmetry changes due to emergent lattice distortions, such as charge density waves (CDWs), is nontrivial because the distortions are not necessarily amenable to a traditional crystallographic description. Using advance scattering and modeling techniques, we reveal the evolution of the atomic displacement modes behind the CDW phases of quasi-one-dimensional NbTe 4 and also derive the so far unknown atomic structure of its low-temperature commensurate (C) CDW phase. Electronic structure calculations based on the experimental C-CDW structure data predict the existence of Dirac fermions whose multiplicity turns out to depend on the degree of lattice distortions accounted for in the experimental structure derivation. Finally, we argue that the electronic structure of CDW systems in general, and in particular in transition metal tetra-tellurides, can be strongly impacted by local lattice distortions and, therefore, they should be fully accounted for when their rich physics is considered.

CATS: The Hubble Constant from Standardized TRGB and Type Ia Supernova Measurements

The tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) provides a luminous standard candle for constructing distance ladders to measure the Hubble constant. In practice, its measurements via edge-detection response (EDR) are complicated by the apparent fuzziness of the tip and the multipeak landscape of the EDR. Previously, we optimized an unsupervised algorithm, Comparative Analysis of TRGBs, to minimize the variance among multiple halo fields per host without relying on individualized choices, achieving state-of-the-art ~<0.05 mag distance measures for optimal data. Here we apply this algorithm to an expanded sample of SN Ia hosts to standardize these to multiple fields in the geometric anchor, NGC 4258. In concert with the Pantheon+ SN Ia sample, this analysis produces a (baseline) result of H 0 = 73.22 ± 2.06 km s -1 Mpc -1 . The largest difference in H 0 between this and similar studies employing the TRGB derives from corrections for SN survey differences and local flows used in the most recent SN Ia compilations that were absent in earlier studies. The SN-related differences total ~2.0 km s -1 Mpc -1 . A smaller share, ~1.4 km s -1 Mpc -1 , results from the inhomogeneity of the TRGB calibration across the distance ladder. We employ a grid of 108 variants around the optimal TRGB algorithm and find that the median of the variants is 72.94 ± 1.98 km s -1 Mpc -1 with an additional uncertainty due to algorithm choices of 0.83 km s -1 Mpc -1 . None of these TRGB variants result in an H 0 of less than 71.6 km s -1 Mpc -1 .

Comparative Analysis of TRGBs (CATs) from Unsupervised, Multi-halo-field Measurements: Contrast is Key

The tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) is an apparent discontinuity of the luminosity function (LF) due to the end of the red giant evolutionary phase and is used to measure distances in the local universe. In practice, tip localization via edge detection response (EDR) relies on several methods applied on a case-by-case basis. It is hard to evaluate how individual choices affect a distance estimation using only a single host field while also avoiding confirmation bias. To devise a standardized approach, we compare unsupervised, algorithmic analyses of the TRGB in multiple halo fields per galaxy. We first optimize methods for the lowest field-to-field dispersion, including spatial filtering, smoothing, and weighting of LF, color band selection, and tip selection based on the number of likely RGB stars and the ratio of stars below versus above the tip (R). We find R, which we call the tip contrast, to be the most important indicator of the quality of EDR measurements; higher R selection can decrease field-to-field dispersion. Further, since R is found to correlate with the age or metallicity of the stellar population based on theoretical modeling, it might result in a displacement of the detected tip magnitude. We find a tip-contrast relation with a slope of -0.023 ± 0.0046 mag/ratio, an ~5σ result that can be used to correct these variations in the detections. When using TRGB to establish a distance ladder, consistent TRGB standardization using tip-contrast relation across rungs is vital to make robust cosmological measurements.

Lattice distortions and the metal–insulator transition in pure and Ti-substituted Ca 3 Ru 2 O 7

Here, we report pair distribution function studies on the relationship between the metal–insulator transition (MIT) and lattice distortions in pure and Ti-substituted bilayer Ca 3 Ru 2 O 7 . Structural refinements performed as a function of temperature, magnetic field and length scale reveal the presence of lattice distortions not only within but also orthogonal to the bilayers. Because of the distortions, the local and average crystal structure differ across a broad temperature region extending from room temperature to temperatures below the MIT. The coexistence of distinct lattice distortions is likely to be behind the marked structural flexibility of Ca 3 Ru 2 O 7 under external stimuli. This observation highlights the ubiquity of lattice distortions in an archetypal Mott system and calls for similar studies on other families of strongly correlated materials.

Thermal and thermoelectric properties of an antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 Te 4

The discovery of an intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator (AFMTI) in MnBi 2 Te 4 has attracted intense attention, most of which lies in its electrical properties. Here in this paper, we report electronic, thermal, and thermoelectric transport studies of this newly found AFMTI. The temperature and magnetic field dependence of its resistivity, thermal conductivity, and Seebeck coefficient indicate strong coupling between charge, lattice, and spin degrees of freedom in this system. Furthermore, MnBi 2 Te 4 exhibits a large anomalous Nernst signal, which is associated with nonzero Berry curvature of the field-induced canted antiferromagnetic state.

Competing energetic states in γ – Fe 2 W O 6 with strong spin-charge-lattice coupling

We report magnetic and electronic properties of γ – Fe 2 W O 6 via neutron powder-diffraction measurements and first-principles density-function theory calculations. We reveal a magnetic ground state with two phases coexisting in which the minor phase is the same as an earlier report, despite the fact that both materials studied have the same space group but with slightly different atomic positions. Interestingly, both magnetic phases are well captured by first-principles calculations. Furthermore, we show that these two magnetic phases are correlated with electronic properties, with one being insulating and the other being metallic. These features suggest that γ – Fe 2 W O 6 exhibits competing energetic states in which spin, charge, and lattice degrees of freedom are strongly coupled to each other.

Magnetic phase transition, magnetoresistance, and anomalous Hall effect in Ga-substituted Y Mn 6 Sn 6 with a ferromagnetic kagome lattice

The HfFe 6 Ge 6- type RMn 6 Sn 6 , a metallic system consisting of ferromagnetic kagome planes of Mn, has been recently shown to be a candidate hosting topological electronic properties. In this paper, we report magnetic and electronic properties in Y Mn 6 Sn 6-x Ga x single crystals via magnetic susceptibility, electrical transport, and single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements. We show that the magnetic ground state of Y Mn 6 Sn 6-x Ga x (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.61 ) evolves from incommensurate antiferromagnet to ferromagnet with increasing Ga substitution x, a feature which is accompanied by the decrease in magnetoresistance. Furthermore, the topological Hall effect observed in the pristine compound is absent in the Ga-substituted ones; instead, the anomalous Hall effect persists which may be associated with the Berry curvature of gapped Dirac bands near the Fermi energy. These results suggest strong correlation between electronic properties and magnetism in this topological magnet that can be readily tuned via Ga substitution.

Complex magnetic structure in Ba 5 Ru 3 O 12 with isolated Ru 3 O 12 trimer

We report detailed magnetic, transport, heat-capacity, and neutron diffraction measurements of Ba 5 Ru 3 O 12 , a compound consisting of isolated Ru 3 O 12 trimers. We show that this system develops long-range antiferromagnetic ordering at T N ~ 60 K without structural distortion or metal-insulator-type transition, which is in sharp contrast to other Barium Ruthenate trimer systems such as 9R-BaRuO 3 and Ba 4 Ru 3 O 10 . A complex magnetic structure is revealed which is attributable to the magnetic frustration due to competing exchange interactions between Ru ions on different crystallographic sites within the Ru 3 O 12 trimer and different degree of orbital hybridization on different Ru-sites. In conclusion, we have also investigated the magnetic structure of Ba 4 Ru 3 O 10 for comparisons.

Magnetic field induced phase transition in spinel GeNi 2 O 4

Cubic spinel GeNi 2 O 4 exhibits intriguing magnetic properties with two successive antiferromagnetic phase transitions (T N1 ≈ 12.1 and T N2 ≈ 11.4 K) with the absence of any structural transition. We have performed detailed heat capacity and magnetic measurements in different crystallographic orientations. A new magnetic phase in presence of magnetic field (H ≥ 4 T) along the [111] direction is revealed, which is not observed when the magnetic field is applied along the [100] and [110] directions. High field neutron powder diffraction measurements confirm such a change in magnetic phase, which could be ascribed to a spin reorientation in the presence of magnetic field. In conclusion, a strong magnetic anisotropy and competing magnetic interactions play a crucial role on the complex magnetic behavior in this cubic system.

Field-induced magnetic phase transitions and the resultant giant anomalous Hall effect in the antiferromagnetic half-Heusler compound DyPtBi

We report field-induced magnetic phase transitions and transport properties of antiferromagnetic DyPtBi. We show that DyPtBi hosts a delicate balance between two different magnetic ground states, which can be controlled by a moderate magnetic field. Furthermore, it exhibits giant anomalous Hall effect (σ A = 1540 Ω –1 cm –1 , θ AHE = 24%) in a field-induced type-I spin structure, presumably attributed to the enhanced Berry curvature associated with avoided band crossings near the Fermi energy and/or nonzero spin chirality. As a result, the latter mechanism points DyPtBi towards a rare potential realization of anomalous Hall effect in an antiferromagnet with face-centered-cubic lattice that was proposed.

Cooperative Ru(4 d )–Ho(4 f ) magnetic ordering and phase coexistence in the 6 H perovskite multiferroic Ba 3 HoRu 2 O 9

We report cooperative magnetic orderings in a 6H-perovskite multiferroic system, Ba 3 HoRu 2 O 9 , via comprehensive neutron powder diffraction measurements. This system undergoes long-range antiferromagnetic ordering at T N1 ~ 50 K with a propagation wave vector of K 1 = (0.5 0 0), a transition temperature much higher than the previously reported one at ~10 K (T N2 ). Both Ru and Ho-moments order simultaneously below T N1 , followed by spin-reorientations at lower temperatures, demonstrating strong Ru(4d)-Ho(4f) magnetic correlation. Below T N1 another magnetic phase with a propagation wave vector K 2 = (0.25 0.25 0) emerges and coexists with the one associated with K 1 , which is rarely observed and suggests complex magnetism due to phase competition in the magnetic ground state. Here, we argue that the exchange-striction arising from the up-up-down-down spin structure associated with K 2 below T N2 may be responsible for the small ferroelectric polarization reported previously in this compound.

Coexistence and Interaction of Spinons and Magnons in an Antiferromagnet with Alternating Antiferromagnetic and Ferromagnetic Quantum Spin Chains

In conventional quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnets with quantum spins, magnetic excitations are carried by either magnons or spinons in different energy regimes: they do not coexist independently, nor could they interact with each other. In this Letter, by combining inelastic neutron scattering, quantum Monte Carlo simulations and Random Phase Approximation calculations, we report the discovery and discuss the physics of the coexistence of magnons and spinons and their interactions in Botallackite-Cu 2 (OH) 3 Br. This is a unique quantum antiferromagnet consisting of alternating ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Spin-1/2 chains with weak interchain couplings. Furthermore, our study presents a new paradigm where one can study the interaction between two different types of magnetic quasiparticles: magnons and spinons.

Topological magnon bands in a room-temperature kagome magnet

Topological magnon is a vibrant research field gaining more and more attention in the past few years. Among many theoretical proposals and limited experimental studies, ferromagnetic kagome lattice emerges as one of the most elucidating systems. Here we report neutron scattering studies of YMn 6 Sn 6 , a metallic system consisting of ferromagnetic kagome planes. This system undergoes a commensurate-to-incommensurate antiferromagnetic phase transition upon cooling with the incommensurability along the out-of-plane direction. We observe magnon band gap opening at the symmetry-protected K points and ascribe this feature to the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions. Our observation supports the existence of topological Dirac magnons in both the commensurate collinear and incommensurate coplanar magnetic orders, which is further corroborated by symmetry analysis. This finding places YMn 6 Sn 6 as a promising candidate for room-temperature magnon spintronics applications.
