Design trades for mission/DSN antenna supportability using TIGRAS

In this paper, we describe the capability and usage of TIGRAS. To illustrate the usage of TIGRAS, a hypothetical mission called Jovian Moon Explorer (JME) was created. We discuss how DSN supportability affects mission and spacecraft design and how a project such as JME can use TIGRAS in an early design phase to design for better DSN coverage for its future operation.

The DSN view periods for a mission

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory Resource Allocation, Planning and Scheduling Office (JPL-RAPSO) is chartered to allocate the limited amount of tracking hours among the various missions in as equitable allotment as can be achieved. The communication windows that can be used for communication between the ground and the Project/spacecraft are called 'viewperiods.' The concept of the viewperiods for (any) mission is presented in this paper, along with the levels of refinement over time (Forecasting/Project/Mid- Range/NSS) associated with those viewperiods.

Using available DSN tracking converage as a design parameter in mission proposals

The way a Proposed Deep Space Mission is designed should be linked to additional design parameters/ constraints such as the availability of the Deep Space Network to support communications. This paper explores this exact methodology by examining the launch opportunities of a simulated mission to Jupiter during a decade long timeframe.
