Electronic response of a Mott insulator at a current-induced insulator-to-metal transition

The Mott insulator Ca 2 RuO 4 exhibits an insulator-to-metal transition induced by d.c. current. Despite the thorough examination of the structural changes associated with this transition, a comprehensive knowledge of the response of electronic degrees of freedom is still lacking. Here we demonstrate current-induced modifications of the electronic states of Ca 2 RuO 4 . Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in conjunction with four-probe electrical transport (transport-ARPES) measurements reveal a clear reduction of the Mott gap and a modification in the dispersion of the Ru bands. Based on a free-energy analysis, we show that the current-induced phase is electronically distinct from the high-temperature zero-current metallic phase. Our results highlight strong interplay of lattice- and orbital-dependent electronic responses in the current-driven insulator-to-metal transition.

Ultrafast Raman thermometry in driven YBa 2 C u 3 O 6.48

Signatures of photoinduced superconductivity have been reported in cuprate materials subjected to a coherent phonon drive. A “cold” superfluid was extracted from the transient Terahertz conductivity and was seen to coexist with “hot” uncondensed quasiparticles, a hallmark of a driven-dissipative system of which the interplay between coherent and incoherent responses is not well understood. Here, time resolved spontaneous Raman scattering was used to probe the lattice temperature in the photoinduced superconducting state of YBa 2 ⁢C⁢u 3 ⁢O 6.48 . An increase in lattice temperature of up to 140 K was observed by measuring the time dependent Raman scattering intensity of an undriven “spectator” phonon mode. This value is consistent with the estimated increase in quasiparticle temperature measured under the same excitation conditions. These temperature changes provide quantitative information on the nature of the driven state and its decay, and may suggest a strategy to optimize this effect.

Exploring magnetic anisotropy and robustness of the J eff = 1/2 state under substantial orthorhombic distortion in Sr 2 IrO 4 thin films

Here, we present a comprehensive study revealing the intricate interplay of the magnetic anisotropy and orthorhombic distortion in thin films of Sr 2 IrO 4 through a Ca 3 Ru 2 O 7 substrate. By inducing a pronounced orthorhombic distortion along the direction of oxygen octahedral edges, we effectively modulated the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in the system. Remarkably divergent responses along the easy and hard magnetic axes were unveiled through x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements under magnetic fields. Specifically, the spin flop transition observed when the magnetic field aligns with the hard axis allows us to estimate the magnetic anisotropy energy, which is around 14.2 µeV, close to that estimated from the single magnon peak measured via Raman spectroscopy. The observed anisotropy energy remains notably lower than the linear estimates derived from the strain-anisotropy energy relationship outlined in H.-H. Kim et al., Nat. Commun. 13, 6674 (2022). This underscores the enduring preservation of the isotropic character of the J eff = 1/2 states. This is also supported by the negligible XMCD intensity ratio at the L 2 edge compared to that of the L 3 edge. Furthermore, the branching ratio determined from x-ray absorption spectroscopy shows that the expectation value of the spin-orbit coupling is similar to that of bulk Sr 2 IrO 4 single crystals. Our findings indicate that even under a substantial anisotropic biaxial distortion, Sr 2 IrO 4 remains remarkably proximate to the J eff = 1/2 state. This study not only provides valuable information in understanding the interplay between magnetic anisotropy and strain but also the robustness of the J eff = 1/2 state under octahedral distortion within materials exhibiting emergent quantum phenomena.

Emergent interlayer magnetic order via strain-induced orthorhombic distortion in the 5 d Mott insulator Sr 2 IrO 4

In this letter, we report a La 2 CuO 4 -like interlayer antiferromagnetic order in Sr2IrO4 films with large orthorhombic distortion (>1.5%). The biaxial lattice strain in epitaxial heterostructures of Sr 2 IrO 4 /Ca 3 Ru 2 O 7 lowers the crystal symmetry of Sr 2 IrO 4 from tetragonal ($C_4$) to orthorhombic ($C_2$), guiding the Ir $5d J_{text{eff}}$ = 1/2 pseudospin moment parallel to the elongated b axis via magnetic anisotropy. From resonant x-ray scattering experiments, we observed an antiferromagnetic order in the orthorhombic Sr 2 IrO 4 film whose interlayer stacking pattern is inverted from that of the tetragonal Sr 2 IrO 4 crystal. This interlayer stacking is similar to that of the orthorhombic La 2 CuO 4 , implying that the asymmetric interlayer exchange interactions between $\textit{a}$ and $\textit{b}$ directions exceed the anisotropic interlayer pseudodipolar interaction. Our result suggests that strain-induced distortion can provide a delicate knob for tuning the long-range magnetic order in quasi-two-dimensional systems by evoking the competition between the interlayer exchange coupling and the pseudodipolar interaction.

Proximate ferromagnetic state in the Kitaev model material α-RuCl 3

α-RuCl 3 is a major candidate for the realization of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid, but its zigzag antiferromagnetic order at low temperatures indicates deviations from the Kitaev model. We have quantified the spin Hamiltonian of α-RuCl 3 by a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study at the Ru L 3 absorption edge. In the paramagnetic state, the quasi-elastic intensity of magnetic excitations has a broad maximum around the zone center without any local maxima at the zigzag magnetic Bragg wavevectors. This finding implies that the zigzag order is fragile and readily destabilized by competing ferromagnetic correlations. The classical ground state of the experimentally determined Hamiltonian is actually ferromagnetic. The zigzag state is stabilized by quantum fluctuations, leaving ferromagnetism – along with the Kitaev spin liquid – as energetically proximate metastable states. The three closely competing states and their collective excitations hold the key to the theoretical understanding of the unusual properties of α-RuCl 3 in magnetic fields.

Spin and charge excitations in the correlated multiband metal Ca 3 Ru 2 O 7

We use Ru $L_3$-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to study the full range of excitations in Ca 3 Ru 2 O 7 from meV-scale magnetic dynamics through to the eV-scale interband transitions. This bilayer 4d-electron correlated metal expresses a rich phase diagram, displaying long-range magnetic order below 56 K followed by a concomitant structural, magnetic, and electronic transition at 48 K. In the low-temperature phase, we observe a magnetic excitation with a bandwidth of ~30 meV and a gap of ~8 meV at the zone center, in excellent agreement with inelastic neutron scattering data. The dispersion can be modeled using a Heisenberg Hamiltonian for a bilayer S = 1 system with single-ion anisotropy terms. At a higher energy loss, dd-type excitations show heavy damping in the presence of itinerant electrons, giving rise to a fluorescencelike signal appearing between the $t_{2g}$ and $e_g$ bands. At the same time, we observe a resonance originating from localized $t_{2g}$ excitations, in analogy to the structurally related Mott insulator Ca 2 RuO 4 . But whereas Ca 2 RuO 4 shows sharp separate spin-orbit excitations and Hund’s-rule driven spin-state transitions, here we identify only a single broad asymmetric feature. These results indicate that local intraionic interactions underlie the correlated physics in Ca 3 Ru 2 O 7 , even as the excitations become strongly mixed in the presence of itinerant electrons.

Dynamic electron correlations with charge order wavelength along all directions in the copper oxide plane

In strongly correlated systems the strength of Coulomb interactions between electrons, relative to their kinetic energy, plays a central role in determining their emergent quantum mechanical phases. We perform resonant x-ray scattering on Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ , a prototypical cuprate superconductor, to probe electronic correlations within the CuO 2 plane. We discover a dynamic quasi-circular pattern in the x-y scattering plane with a radius that matches the wave vector magnitude of the well-known static charge order. Along with doping- and temperature-dependent measurements, our experiments reveal a picture of charge order competing with superconductivity where short-range domains along x and y can dynamically rotate into any other in-plane direction. This quasi-circular spectrum, a hallmark of Brazovskii-type fluctuations, has immediate consequences to our understanding of rotational and translational symmetry breaking in the cuprates. We discuss how the combination of short- and long-range Coulomb interactions results in an effective non-monotonic potential that may determine the quasi-circular pattern.
