Numerical simulation of RHIC polarized proton run 17 spin flipper experiments

RHIC nine-magnet spin flipper has been operated successfully during RHIC polarized proton Run 17, with 97% spin flip efficiency achieved. The results show the importance of mirror resonance removal, small spin tune spread, and proper spin flipper driving tune sweep speed. Detailed spin tracking simulations, based on a Lorentz force and Thomas-BMT differential equation numerical solver code for accuracy, have been carried out to understand the experimental results. Agreement within measurement accuracy is obtained at injection energy, 23.8 GeV. It is not as tight at 255 GeV, reasons for that are exposed. These measurements and numerical studies allow to determine the sensitivity of spin-flip efficiency to the dispersion slopes at the two Siberian snakes and to the ac dipole frequency sweep speed. They also provide guidance for future developments at BNL’s electron-ion collider. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

The EIC accelerator: design highlights and project status

The design of the electron-ion collider (EIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory is well underway, aiming at a peak electron-proton luminosity of 10e+34 cm^-1·sec^-1. This high luminosity, the wide center-of-mass energy range from 29 to 141 GeV (e-p) and the high level of polarization require innovative solutions to maximize the performance of the machine, which makes the EIC one of the most challenging accelerator projects to date. The complexity of the EIC will be discussed, and the project status and plans will be presented.

Optical Properties of Wigglers for EIC Ring Electron Cooler

Electron Ion Collider (EIC) requires cooling of protons at top energy (275 GeV) to achieve the average design luminosity. Such a cooler must be capable of counteracting an IBS-driven emittance growth in proton bunches. The Ring Electron Cooler (REC) is a candidate for the EIC top energy cooler. The REC is a non-magnetized RF-based 150 MeV electron cooler, in which electrons are kept in the storage ring and re-utilized for several million turns. The REC is equipped with 18 damping wigglers, which keep electrons’ emittance constant by counteracting both electrons’ IBS and a proton electron beam-beam scattering happening in the cooling section. These wigglers operate at a relatively low energy but must have a rather high field to provide the required radiation cooling of electrons. As a result of this unique range of parameters, the wigglers’ optics exhibits interesting features The actual design parameters of the wigglers will be finalized in the REC lattice optimization.

A Damping Ring for the Rapid Cycling Synchrotron

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) electron accelerator chain consists of a 400 MeV electron Linear Accelerator (LINAC), the Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS), and the Electron Storage Ring (ESR). The LINAC injects into the RCS, the RCS ramps to a top energy of 18 GeV and the electron beam is extracted to the ESR. To minimize the momentum spread of the 400 MeV injected beam and serve as a 28 nC electron accumulator ring, a damping ring is proposed. This ring may also serve as an intermediate energy booster for the RCS. The damping ring is not within the current baseline of the EIC project.

Design of a ring cooler for electron ion collider with reverse bends

The high quality electron beam of a ring cooler for the electron ion collider requires strong radiation damping (and thus strong wigglers) to overcome both the intra-beam and the beam-beam scattering. In this paper we present an alternative design, where conventional bends with reversing and alternating directions between horizontal and vertical planes are implemented to satisfy the damping requirements.”

Electron-Ion Collider Design Status

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) is being designed for construction at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Activities have been focused on beam-beam simulations, polarization studies, and beam dynamics, as well as on maturing the layout and lattice design of the constituent accelerators and the interaction region. The latest design advances will be presented.

Proton-electron focusing in EIC ring cooler

In this note we consider an effect of the proton-electron focusing on an emittance of e-bunches in the ring cooler. It will be shown that for the optimized parameters of the ring cooler, when the proton and the electron beams are well-matched in the cooling section (CS), there is no significant emittance growth from a proton-electron space charge (SC) kick.
