Tests Of The Extended Range SRF Cavity Tuners For The LCLS-II-HE Project*

The LCLS-II HE superconducting linac can produce multi-energy beams by supporting multiple undulator lines simultaneously. This could be achieved by using the cavity SRF tuner in the off-frequency detune mode. This off-frequency operation method was tested in the verification cryomodule (vCM) and CM 1 at Fermilab at 2 K. In both cases, the tuners achieved a frequency shift of -565$\pm$80 kHz. This study will discuss cavity frequency during each step as it is being assembled in the cryomodule string and finally when it is being tested at 2 K. Tracking the cavity frequency helped enable the tuners to reach this large frequency shift. The specific procedures of tuner setting during assembly will be presented.

Design of axion and axion dark matter searches based on ultra high Q SRF cavities

The Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems center is developing searches for dark photons, axions and ALPs with the goal of improving upon the current state-of-the-art sensitivity. These efforts leverage on Fermi National Accelerator expertise on ultra-high quality factor superconducting radio frequency cavities combined with the center research on quantum technology. Here we focus on multiple axion searches that utilize ~1E10 quality factor superconducting radio frequency cavities and their resonant modes to enhance the production and/or detection of axions in the cavity volume. In addition, we present preliminary results of single-mode and multi-mode nonlinearity measurements that were carried out as part of an experimental feasibility study to gain insight on the behavior of the ultra-high quality factor resonators and the experimental RF system in the regime relevant for axion searches.

Wall plug efficiency analysis of a compact SRF industrial accelerator [Poster]

Superconducting radiofrequency cavities offer extremely high (>90%) RF-to-beam energy conversion efficiency. Recent breakthroughs in the Nb 3 Sn SRF cavity technology, successful demonstration of the conduction cooling technique, and the availability of high cooling capacity cryocoolers has made possible the use of SRF for industrial particle accelerators. However, the overall wall plug-to-beam efficiency of such an SRF accelerator can be limited by the wall plug-to-RF power efficiency of the RF source powering this accelerator. The present study quantifies the wall plug-to-beam efficiency of a conduction-cooled SRF accelerator considering several different choices of the RF power source. The study concludes that the wall plug efficiency of the accelerator is indeed limited by that of the power source.

2.6GHz SRF Cavity Tuner for DarkPhoton Experiment [Poster]

There are several experiments ongoing at FNAL that require frequency tuning of bare (undressed) SRF cavities when they are cooled down and operated inside dilution refrigerator. One of these experiments is for the search of dark photons using a 2.6 GHz SRF cavity. The limited heat capacity of a dilution refrigerator prevents using a stepper motor for an SRF cavity tuner. The tuner for the 2.6 GHz SRF cavity will be equipped with encapsulated piezo actuators that will deliver long and short-range frequency tuning. Design of the tuner and results of the testing cavity/tuner system at ambient environment and at T = 77 K will be presented.

Analysis of RF high power sources for 1MW – range, 10 MeV CW industrial accelerator.

Cobalt-60 is the dominant source of ionizing radiation for sterilizing products in the $200B/year medical device industry. Security and accessibility concerns around this radioactive material - sourced from countries including Russia and China - present national security and economic risks. There is a continued national urgency to replace such high-risk sources with low-risk alternatives such as electron or x-ray beams driven by accelerators. While e-beam sources have been in use for many years, they still represent a small portion of the market. X-ray sources are becoming economical alternatives. Meeting the processing capacity required to replace Co-60 requires a step-change in the capability, efficiency, and overall operating cost of electron accelerators to make adoption feasible. The radiofrequency (RF) power that drives accelerating cavities represents significant capital and operating costs for these accelerators. For accelerator-based systems to be a viable alternative for these applications, RF systems must be economical to manufacture, deploy, and operate.
