Differential Cross Sections for the Electron Impact Excitation of the A(sup 3)(Sigma)(sub u)(sup +), B(sup 3)Pi(sub g), W(sup 3)(Delta)(sub u), B'(sup 3)(Sigma)(sub u)(sup -), a'(sup 1)Sigma(sub u)(sup -), a(sup 1)Pi(sub g), w(sup 1)Delta(sub u), and C(sup 3)Pi(sub u) States of N(sub 2)

Measurements of differential cross sections for the electron-impact excitation of molecular nitrogen from the ground X(sup 1)(Sigma)(sub g)(sup +)(v''=0)level to the A(sup 3)(Sigma)(sub u)(sup +)(v'), B(sup 3)Pi(sub g)(v'), W(sup 3)(Delta)(sub u)(v'),B'(sup 3)(Sigma)(sub u)(sup -)(v'), a(sup 1)(Pi)(sub g)(v'), w(sup 1)(Delta)(sub u)(v'), and C(sup 3)(Pi)(sub u)(v') levels are presented. The data are obtained at the incident energies of 10, 12.5, 15, 17.5, 20, 30, 50, and 100 eV over the angular range of 5(deg)-130(deg) in 5(deg) intervals. The individual electronic state excitation differential cross sections are obtained by unfolding electron energy-loss spectra of molecular nitrogen using available semiempirical Frank-Condon factors. The data are compared to previous measurements and to available theory. We also make several important suggestions regarding future work that, like the present, relies on the unfolding of electron energy-loss spectra for obtaining differential cross sections.

Extrapolation procedures in Mott electron polarimetry

In standard Mott electron polarimetry using thin gold film targets, extrapolation procedures must be used to reduce the experimentally measured asymmetries A to the values they would have for scattering from single atoms. These extrapolations involve the dependent of A on either the gold film thickness or the maximum detected electron energy loss in the target. A concentric cylindrical-electrode Mott polarimeter, has been used to study and compare these two types of extrapolations over the electron energy range 20-100 keV. The potential systematic errors which can result from such procedures are analyzed in detail, particularly with regard to the use of various fitting functions in thickness extrapolations, and the failure of perfect energy-loss discrimination to yield accurate polarizations when thick foils are used.

Electron impact excitation of coronene

A preliminary study of the electron-impact excitation of thermally evaporated coronene at 550 C was carried out using electron-energy-loss spectroscopy. Measurements of the energy-loss spectra of coronene at high (100 eV) and low (5-20 eV) impact energies are presented. One of the high-energy spectra was converted to an apparent generalized oscillator strength spectrum and compared to the photoabsorption spectrum of coronene. Observations concerning vibrational excitation of coronene by electron impact are also presented and discussed.

Electron-impact excitation cross sections for the b 3Sigma(+)nu state of H2

Differential and integral cross sections for electron-impact excitation of the b 3Sigma(+)nu state of H2 have been determined in the 20-100-eV impact energy region. The calibration of the cross sections was achieved through the H2 elastic scattering cross sections, which in turn were normalized to absolute He elastic scattering cross sections. Comparison is made with available experimental data and with theoretical results applying Born-Ochkur-Rudge, distorted-wave, and close-coupling approximations.

Elastic electron scattering cross sections for molecular hydrogen

Using an electron-beam - molecular-beam apparatus and employing the relative flow technique, ratios of the differential elastic scattering cross sections (DCSs of H2 to He were measured at incident electron energies of 15-100 eV and over the angular range of 10-125 degrees. From these ratios, the absolute elastic DCSs for H2 were determined by normalization to accurate, available elastic DCSs of He. Since pure rotational structure was not resolved in this work, the DCSs reported are the sum of elastic and rotational excitations of H2 at room temperature. The reliability of the relative flow normalization to He was checked at each energy and angle by performing similar elastic DCS measurements on Ne (for which the cross sections are known). The resulting absolute Ne DCSs were found to be in good agreement (within 10 percent with the Ne elastic DCSs measured previously (Register and Trajmar, 1984). From the DCSs, integral and momentumtransfer cross sections were calculated. The present results are compared with other recent measurements.

Electron-impact excitation of the a3Sigma(+)g, B1Sigma(+)u, c3Pi u, and C1Pi u states of H2

Normilized differential and integral cross sections for electron-impact excitation of the dipole-allowed B1Sigma(+)u, C1Pi u and dipole-forbidden a3Sigma(+)g, c3Pi u states of molecular hydrogen have been determined by analysis of energy-loss spectra obtained with a crossed-beam apparatus at electron-impact energies of 20, 30, 40 and 60 eV and scattering angles ranging from 10 to 120 degrees. Normalization of the data was achieved by utilizing elastic differential cross sections measured previously by (Khakoo and Trajmar, 1986). The cross sections are compared with other available theoretical and experimental data.

The kinetic energy spectrum of protons produced by the dissociative ionization of H2 by electron impact

The kinetic energy spectra of protons resulting from the dissociative ionization of H2 by electron impact have been measured for electron impact energies from threshold (approximately 17 eV) to 160 eV at 90 deg and 30 deg detection angles, using a crossed-beam experimental arrangement. To check reliability, two separate proton energy analysis methods have been employed, i.e., a time-of-flight proton energy analysis and an electrostatic hemispherical energy analyzer. The present results are compared with previous measurements.

A compact high current pulsed electron gun with subnanosecond electron pulse widths

A magnetically-collimated, double-pulsed electron gun capable of generating electron pulses with a peak instantaneous current of approximately 70 microamps and a temporal width of 0.35 ns (FWHM) has been developed. Calibration is accomplished by measuring the lifetime of the well known 2(1P)-to-1(1S) transition in helium (58.4nm) at a near-threshold electron-impact energy by use of the delayed-coincidence technique.

Electron impact excitation from a 1 Delta g state of molecular oxygen

First measurements of electron impact excitation on the O2 a delta-one sub g metastable state to a higher bound state, pi-one sub u, is reported. The data were taken at an incident electron energy of 500 eV and scattering angles of 0 deg to 15 deg. A superelastic electron scattering experiment was performed on the pure oxygen target gas in order to establish the composition of the discharged oxygen and to confirm the existence of delta-one sub g molecules in the interaction region. The electron-impact energy loss spectrum obtained is shown. The electronic assignment of the upper state which produces the vibrational structure was determined to be pi-one sub u by examining the potential energy curves of O2 and applying the electric dipole selection rules. The relative line intensities were obtained and used to determine the Morse potential for the pi-one sub u state.
