Structural Optimization Using the Newton Modified Barrier Method

The Newton Modified Barrier Method (NMBM) is applied to structural optimization problems with large a number of design variables and constraints. This nonlinear mathematical programming algorithm was based on the Modified Barrier Function (MBF) theory and the Newton method for unconstrained optimization. The distinctive feature of the NMBM method is the rate of convergence that is due to the fact that the design remains in the Newton area after each Lagrange multiplier update. This convergence characteristic is illustrated by application to structural problems with a varying number of design variables and constraints. The results are compared with those obtained by optimality criteria (OC) methods and by the ASTROS program.

Application of Newton modified barrier method (NMBM) to structural optimization

This paper presents the application of the NMBM to obtain a minimum weight structure with constraints on displacements and minimum sizes. The solution to the problem is obtained via minimizing the Modified Barrier Function (MBF) at each step by using the Newton Method and updating Lagrange multipliers. The Lagrange multipliers are updated by using the value of the constraints at the minimum of the MBF. Three truss problems with a different number of design variables are solved. The convergence to the minimum weight design was found to be monotonic and the algorithm is potentially robust for solving problems with a large number of design variables.

Optimization of structure-control systems with efficiency constraint

The structure-control system optimization problem is formulated with constraints on the closed-loop eigenvalues and the efficiency of the reduced order system. The feasibility of the approach is illustrated by designing the ACOSS-FOUR structure with a reduced order system and improving the efficiency characteristics of the structures-control system.

Optimization of the structural and control system for LSS with reduced-order model

The objective is the simultaneous design of the structural and control system for space structures. The minimum weight of the structure is the objective function, and the constraints are placed on the closed loop distribution of the frequencies and the damping parameters. The controls approach used is linear quadratic regulator with constant feedback. A reduced-order control system is used. The effect of uncontrolled modes is taken into consideration by the model error sensitivity suppression (MESS) technique which modified the weighting parameters for the control forces. For illustration, an ACOSS-FOUR structure is designed for a different number of controlled modes with specified values for the closed loop damping parameters and frequencies. The dynamic response of the optimum designs for an initial disturbance is compared.

Optimization of structure and control system

The objective of this study is the simultaneous design of the structural and control system for space structures. This study is focused on considering the effect of the number and the location of the actuators on the minimum weight of the structure, and the total work done by the actuators for specified constraints and disturbance. The controls approach used is the linear quadratic regulator theory with constant feedback. At the beginning collocated actuators and sensors are provided in all the elements. The actuator doing the least work is removed one at a time, and the structure is optimized for the specified constraints on the closed-loop eigenvalues and the damping parameters. The procedure of eliminating an actuator is continued until an acceptable design satisfying the constraints is obtained. The study draws some conclusions on the trade between the total work done by the actuators, and the optimum weight and the number of actuators.

Structural optimization using optimality criteria methods

Optimality criteria methods take advantage of some concepts as those of statically determinate or indeterminate structures, and certain variational principles of structural dynamics, to develop efficient algorithms for the sizing of structures that are subjected to stiffness-related constraints. Some of the methods and iterative strategies developed over the last decade for calculations of the Lagrange multipliers in stressand displacement-limited problems, as well as for satisfying the appropriate optimality criterion, are discussed. The application of these methods are illustrated by solving problems with stress and displacement constraints.
