Themis Visible Imaging of the South Polar Layered Deposits, Martian Southern Spring, 2003

The polar layered deposits (PLD) of Mars have attracted considerable attention since their identification in Mariner 9 images, largely due to the possibility that these finely layered, volatile-rich deposits hold a record of recent eras in Martian climate history. The PLD have been a target of imaging and other sensors in the last several decades, but only recently has it been possible to obtain a moderately high resolution image map, using the visible sensor on 2001 Mars Odyssey's Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS). We report here on the acquisition of a 36 meter/pixel contiguous single-band visible image data set of the south polar layered deposits (SPLD), obtained during early southern spring in 2003. The data will undoubtedly be applied to many problems in Mars polar studies.

We will discuss here, and in more detail at the Conference, the use of these images to further characterize the population of impact craters on the SPLD, and the implications of the observed population for the age and evolution of the SPLD.

NIMS Science Objectives and Observational Plans for Ganymede during the Galileo Tour

The Galileo spacecraft will use a Near Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (NIMS) to study Jupiter s moon, Ganymede. Although the main goal is to study the chemical components in the various surface compositional units, terrain types, craters, polar effects, hemisphere differences, and the atmosphere also will be examined.

Infrared observations of Phobos from Mariner 9

Radiometric measurements of Phobos at 10 and 20 microns show that the surface is covered by a material whose conductivity is extremely low, around .000001 cal per cm per sec per deg K. It is concluded that Phobos is covered with a layer of dust at least 1 mm thick.

Stellar flux calibration at 10 and 20 microns using Mariner 6, 7, and 9 results

The stellar flux calibrations at 10 and 20 microns have been obtained by comparing observations of alpha Orionis and alpha Scorpii with observations of the central area of Mars. The flux from Mars, in turn, has been inferred from data of the Mariner 6, 7, and 9 infrared radiometers. If the 10- and 20-micron broadband magnitudes of alpha Ori are set equal to -5.18 and -5.70, the flux of a zero magnitude star has been determined to be 1.3 plus or minus 0.2 times 10 to the -16th power and 8.1 plus or minus 1.5 times 10 to the -18th power W/sq cm/micron at 10.0 and 20.0 microns.
