Shock compression of crystalline TeO 2 to the high-pressure fluid regime: Insights from ab initio molecular dynamics simulations

The shock response of fully-dense and porous crystalline tellurium dioxide (TeO 2 ) to the high-pressure and high-temperature fluid regime was investigated within the framework of density functional theory with Mermin’s generalization to finite temperatures. The principal and porous shock Hugoniot curves were predicted from canonical ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations, with the phase space sampled along isotherms up to 80 000 K, for densities ranging from ρ = 3 to 17 g/cm 3 . The polymorphs investigated are α-TeO 2 paratellurite (P4 1 2 1 2), TeO 2 cotunnite (Pnma), and TeO 2 post-cotunnite (P2 1 /m). Based on the discontinuity found in the calculated U s – u p slope of TeO 2 post-cotunnite at a shock velocity of U s ≃ 8.35km/s and a particle velocity of u p ≃ 3.64 km/s, the shock melting temperature and pressure are predicted to be ≃ 6500 K and ≃ 170 GPa. Results from the AIMD simulations are in line with the static compression data of TeO 2 paratellurite and cotunnite, and with the recent shock Hugoniot data for single-crystal α- TeO 2 for pressures up to 85 GPa, obtained using the inclined-mirror method and the velocity interferometer system for any reflector combined with powder gun and two-stage light-gas gun.

High-temperature chromium diffusion in austenitic stainless steel: Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations

Chromium self-diffusion through stainless steel (SS) matrix and along grain boundaries is an important mechanism controlling SS structural materials corrosion. For this work, Cr diffusion in austenitic SS was simulated using canonical ab initio molecular dynamics with realistic models of type-316 SS bulk, with and without Cr vacancies, and a low-energy Σ3 twin boundary typically observed at active corrosion sites. Cr self-diffusion coefficients at 750 and 850 °C calculated using Einstein’s diffusion equation are 4.2 × 10 –6 and 8.1 × 10 –6 Å 2 ps –1 in pristine bulk, 3.8 × 10 –3 and 5.5 × 10 –3 Å 2 ps –1 in bulk including Cr vacancies, and 9.5 × 10 –2 and 1.0 × 10 –1 Å 2 ps –1 at a Σ3[1 1 1]60° twin boundary.

Polymorphism and phase transitions in Na 2 U 2 O 7 from density functional perturbation theory

Polymorphism and phase transitions in sodium diuranate, Na 2 U 2 O 7 , are investigated with density functional perturbation theory (DFPT). Thermal properties of crystalline α-, β- and γ-Na 2 U 2 O 7 polymorphs are predicted from DFPT phonon calculations, i.e., the first time for the high-temperature γ-Na 2 U 2 O 7 phase (R$\bar{3}$ with combining macron]m symmetry). The standard molar isochoric heat capacities predicted within the quasi-harmonic approximation are C p (298.15K)= 219.4 and 220.9 J K -1 mol -1 mfor P21/a α-Na 2 U 2 O 7 and C2/m β-Na 2 U 2 O 7 , respectively. Gibbs free energy calculations reveal that α-Na 2 U 2 O 7 (P2 1 /a) and β-Na 2 U 2 O 7 (C2/m) are almost energetically degenerate at low temperature, with β-Na 2 U 2 O 7 becoming slightly more stable than α-Na 2 U 2 O 7 as temperature increases. Here these findings are consistent with XRD data showing a mixture of α and β phases after cooling of γ-Na 2 U 2 O 7 to room temperature and the observation of a sluggish α → β phase transition above ca. 600 K. A recently observed α-Na 2 U 2 O 7 structure with P21 symmetry is also shown to be metastable at low temperature. Based on Gibbs free energy, no direct β → γ solid-solid phase transition is predicted at high temperature, although some experiments reported the existence of such phase transition around 1348 K. This, along with recent experiments, suggests the occurrence of a multi-step process consisting of initial β-phase decomposition, followed by recrystallization into γ-phase as temperature increases.

Experimental demonstration of necessary conditions for X-ray induced synthesis of cesium superoxide

Absorption of sufficiently energetic X-ray photons by a molecular system results in a cascade of ultrafast electronic relaxation processes which leads to a distortion and dissociation of its molecular structure. Here, in this work, we demonstrate that only decomposition of powdered cesium oxalate monohydrate induced by monochromatic X-ray irradiation under high pressure leads to the formation of cesium superoxide. Whereas, for an unhydrated form of cesium oxalate subjected to the same extreme conditions, only degradation of the electron density distribution is observed. Moreover, the corresponding model of X-ray induced electronic relaxation cascades with an emphasis on water molecules’ critical role is proposed. Our experimental results suggest that the presence of water molecules in initially solid-state systems (i.e. additional electronic relaxation channels) together with applied high pressure (reduced interatomic/intermolecular distance) could potentially be a universal criteria for chemical and structural synthesis of novel compounds via X-ray induced photochemistry.

Structure characterization and steam oxidation performance of U 3 Si 2 with Zr alloying additions

Research and development of high uranium density fuels supports the on-going effort to enhance reactor technology, safety, performance, and economics. Among high uranium density fuels, U 3 Si 2 is a favored fuel candidate due to its higher uranium density and improved thermal conductivity when compared to traditional UO 2 . While U 3 Si 2 demonstrates an improved fuel economy, it suffers from rapid degradation when exposed to water at T > 300°C. In order for U 3 Si 2 to be implemented in water cooled reactors, the water reaction must be understood and mitigated. Reported here is the performance of Zr alloying additions to U 3 Si 2 exposed to high temperature steam oxidation environments. Here, the investigation shows that homogenization heat treatment contributes to a delayed onset of oxidation and an improved homogeneity throughout the arc-melt fabricated alloyed compositions. Of the pre- and post-annealed samples, the post-annealed 7 vol% Zr addition exhibited the highest onset temperature of oxidation. A preliminary computational investigation to complement the experimental analysis assesses the solubility of Zr in U 3 Si 2 and its incorporation in the crystal lattice.

Crystal and Electronic Structures of A 2 NaIO 6 Periodate Double Perovskites (A = Sr, Ca, Ba): Candidate Wasteforms for I-129 Immobilization

The synthesis, structure, and thermal stability of the periodate double perovskites A 2 NaIO 6 (A= Ba, Sr, Ca) were investigated in the context of potential application for the immobilization of radioiodine. A combination of X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and DFT simulations were applied to determine accurate crystal structures of these compounds and understand their relative stability. The compounds were found to exhibit rock-salt ordering of Na and I on the perovskite B-site; Ba 2 NaIO 6 was found to adopt the Fm- 3 m aristotype structure, whereas Sr 2 NaIO 6 and Ca 2 NaIO 6 adopt the P 2 1 / n hettotype structure, characterized by cooperative octahedral tilting. DFT simulations determined the Fm- 3 m and P 2 1 / n structures of Ba 2 NaIO 6 to be energetically degenerate at room temperature, whereas diffraction and spectroscopy data evidence only the presence of the Fm- 3 m phase at room temperature, which may imply an incipient phase transition for this compound. The periodate double perovskites were found to exhibit remarkable thermal stability, with Ba 2 NaIO 6 only decomposing above 1050 °C in air, which is apparently the highest recorded decomposition temperature so far recorded for any iodine bearing compound. As such, these compounds offer some potential for application in the immobilization of iodine-129, from nuclear fuel reprocessing, with an iodine incorporation rate of 25–40 wt%. The synthesis of these compounds, elaborated here, is also compatible with both current conventional and future advanced processes for iodine recovery from the dissolver off-gas.

Thermodynamic properties of metaschoepite predicted from density functional perturbation theory

Density functional perturbation theory (DFPT) calculations of the thermodynamic properties of metaschoepite, (UO 2 ) 8 0 2 (OH) 12 •10H 2 0, are reported. Using a recently revised crystal structure of metaschoepite, the predicted molar entropy and isobaric heat capacity are overall significantly smaller than previous calculations using an earlier orthorhombic crystal structure model. The present DFPT calculations also show large differences between the thermo-dynamic functions of metaschoepite and schoepite, which might reflect the change in phonon properties upon removal of two H 2 0 molecules per formula unit and alteration of the H-bonded interlayer water network from schoepite to metaschoepite.

Radionuclide incorporation in negative thermal expansion α-Zr(WO 4 ) 2 : A density functional theory study

The incorporation of uranium, plutonium and technetium in the negative thermal expansion (NTE) α-Zr (WO 4 ) 2 has been investigated within the framework of density functional theory (DFT). It is found that the vacancy formation energies of the charged vacancies are overall larger than that of its counterpart neutral Frenkel defects and Schottky defects. DFT calculations suggest that U and Pu substitutions for the Zr site are preferred in α-Zr (WO 4 ) 2 . In case of Tc substitution, both Tc(IV) for the Zr site and Tc(VII) for the W site are considered under oxygen-poor and oxygen-rich conditions, while Tc(VII) substitution can be improved significantly by including Y 2 O 3 (charge compensation).

Strain-controlled magnetic ordering in 2D carbon metamaterials

Here, we use ab initio spin-polarized density functional theory to study the magnetic order in a Kagomé-like 2D metamaterial consisting of pristine or substitutionally doped phenalenyl radicals polymerized into a nanoporous, graphene-like structure. In this and in a larger class of related structures, the constituent polyaromatic hydrocarbon molecules can be considered as quantum dots that may carry a net magnetic moment. The structure of this porous system and the coupling between the quantum dots may be changed significantly by applying moderate strain, thus allowing to control the magnetic order and the underlying electronic structure.
