Comparative study on the performance of power and bandwidth efficient modulations in LMSS under fading and interference

Aspects of error performance of various power and bandwidth efficient modulations for the land mobile satellite systems (LMSS) were investigated under multipath fading and interferences by using Monte-Carlo simulation. A differential detection for 16QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) was proposed to cope with Ricean fading and Doppler shift. Computer simulation results show that the performance of 16QAM with differential detection is as good as that of 16PSK with coherent detection and 3 dB better than that of 16PSK with differential detection, although it degrades by about 4.5 dB as compared to 16QAM with coherent detection under an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. For the nonlinear channels, 16QAM with modified signal constellations is introduced and analyzed. The simulation results show that the modified 16QAM exhibits a gain of 2.5 dB over 16PSK under traveling-wave tube nonlinearity, and about 4 dB gain over 16PSK at the bit error rate of 10 exp -5 under AWGN. Computer simulation results for modified 16 QAM under cochannel interference and adjacent-channel interference are also presented.

Performance evaluation of land mobile satellite system under fading and interference using multiple TCM by Monte-Carlo simulation

The performance of the land mobile satellite system (LMSS) was evaluated by using two trellis coded modulation (TCM) schemes under multipath fading and interference. The results were also compared with uncoded QPSK. The trellis coding formats included a trellis code designed for optimum performance on the fading channel that typifies satellite to mobile communications, as well as one designed for optimum performance in the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. The results show that, in Rayleigh fading, the TCM code designed for optimum performance in such an environment performs 4 dB better than the TCM code designed for optimum performance in AWGN, and 10 dB better than the uncoded format, at a bit error rate (BER) of 10 exp -4. Additional results on the performance degradation due to the nonlinearities in the satellite transponder and the adjacent and cochannel interference show that the TCM system is more sensitive than the uncoded system to the phase distortion caused by these impairments.

Performance evaluation of land mobile satellite system under vegetative shadowing using differential multiple TCM and QPSK

A comparative analysis by computer simulation of the land mobile satellite system (LMSS) is presented for the uncoded quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK), rate 2/3 8-PSK trellis coded modulation (TCM), and rate 4/6 multiplicity 2 8-PSK TCM schemes. An analytical model is used for simulating the fading channel. The simulation results show that under Rayleigh fades, the TCM designed for the fading channel is superior to uncoded QPSK and to the conventional TCM optimized for the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. The performance of differentially detected TCM under AWGN and fading is examined based on the preliminary results. Results of the uncoded QPSK with fading channel modeled with the empirical fade data are given.

Study on the spectral efficiency of SFH-GMSK in land mobile telephone communication by direct simulation

A spread spectrum system, slow frequency hopping with GMSK (Gaussian minimum shift keying) modulation (SFH-GMSK), is proposed for mobile telephone communications. The system performance is evaluated using computer simulation and is compared with an unspread system. Results show that under multipath fading conditions, when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is greater than 15 dB, slow frequency hopping gives some bit error rate improvement over the unspread system. Theoretical predictions indicate that a system efficiency of 20-65 users per cell can be achieved in the cellular configuration. Joint use of SFH-GMSK and FM is also investigated. It is shown that FM interference can cause serious degradation to the SFH-GMSK performance.

Coded multiple chirp spread spectrum system and overlay service

An asynchronous spread-spectrum system called coded multiple chirp is proposed, and the possible spread-spectrum overlay over an analog FM-TV signal is investigated by computer simulation. Multiple single-sloped up and down chirps are encoded by a pseudonoise code and decoded by dechirpers (pulse-compression filters) followed by a digital code correlator. The performance of the proposed system, expressed in terms of in probability of bit error and code miss probability, is similar to that of FSK (frequency shift keying) using codewords if sufficient compression gain is used. When chirp is used to overlay an FM-TV channel, two chirp signals with data rate up to 25 kb/s could be overlaid in a 36-MHz satellite transponder without significant mutual interference. Performance estimates for a VSAT (very small aperture terminal) earth station operating at C-band show that a 2.4-m antenna and 300-mW transmitter could send a 2.4-kb/s signal to a large central earth station over an occupied channel.
