Time-reversal symmetry breaking superconductivity between twisted cuprate superconductors

Twisted interfaces between stacked van der Waals (vdW) cuprate crystals present a platform for engineering superconducting order parameters by adjusting stacking angles. Using a cryogenic assembly technique, we construct twisted vdW Josephson junctions (JJs) at atomically sharp interfaces between Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+x crystals, with quality approaching the limit set by intrinsic JJs. Near 45° twist angle, we observe fractional Shapiro steps and Fraunhofer patterns, consistent with the existence of two degenerate Josephson ground states related by time-reversal symmetry (TRS). By programming the JJ current bias sequence, we controllably break TRS to place the JJ into either of the two ground states, realizing reversible Josephson diodes without external magnetic fields. Furthermore, our results open a path to engineering topological devices at higher temperatures.

Engineering structural homogeneity and magnetotransport in strained Nd 2 Ir 2 O 7 films

The 5d pyrochlore iridate family (R 2 Ir 2 O 7 , where R is a rare earth ion) has garnered significant attention due to its topological properties, such as Weyl semimetallic phases and axion insulator. However, the investigation of these properties has been impeded by severe iridium loss during growth, which results in the formation of defects and impurities. Herein, we demonstrate a method for controlling impurities and defects in strained Nd 2 Ir 2 O 7 (NIO-227) films by compensating for iridium loss during growth. By increasing the amount of IrO 2 target ablated, we enhance the morphological quality and electrical transport properties of the fabricated films. Furthermore, our results show that the anomalous Hall effects of the films have a strong dependency on the amount of IrO 2 target ablated, which is attributed to the structural inhomogeneity in the NIO-227 films. Our work provides a way to control defects and impurities and would promote the investigation of topological phases in the family R 2 Ir 2 O 7 .

Extended Oxygen Octahedral Tilt Proximity near Oxide Heterostructures

The oxide interfaces between materials with different structural symmetries have been actively studied due to their novel physical properties. However, the investigation of intriguing interfacial phenomena caused by the oxygen octahedral tilt (OOT) proximity effect has not been fully exploited, as there is still no clear understanding of what determines the proximity length and what the underlying control mechanism is. Here, we achieved scalability of the OOT proximity effect in SrRuO 3 (SRO) by epitaxial strain near the SRO/SrTiO 3 heterointerface. We demonstrated that the OOT proximity length scale of SRO is extended from 4 unit cells to 14 unit cells by employing advanced scanning transmission electron microscopy. We also suggest that this variation may originate from changes in phonon dispersions due to electron-phonon coupling in SRO. Here, this study will provide in-depth insights into the structural gradients of correlated systems and facilitate potential device applications.

Solid‐State Reaction Heterogeneity During Calcination of Lithium‐Ion Battery Cathode

Abstract During solid‐state calcination, with increasing temperature, materials undergo complex phase transitions with heterogeneous solid‐state reactions and mass transport. Precise control of the calcination chemistry is therefore crucial for synthesizing state‐of‐the‐art Ni‐rich layered oxides (LiNi 1‐x‐y Co x Mn y O 2 , NRNCM) as cathode materials for lithium‐ion batteries. Although the battery performance depends on the chemical heterogeneity during NRNCM calcination, it has not yet been elucidated. Herein, through synchrotron‐based X‐ray, mass spectrometry microscopy, and structural analyses, it is revealed that the temperature‐dependent reaction kinetics, the diffusivity of solid‐state lithium sources, and the ambient oxygen control the local chemical compositions of the reaction intermediates within a calcined particle. Additionally, it is found that the variations in the reducing power of the transition metals (i.e., Ni, Co, and Mn) determine the local structures at the nanoscale. The investigation of the reaction mechanism via imaging analysis provides valuable information for tuning the calcination chemistry and developing high‐energy/power density lithium‐ion batteries.

Spin-orbit coupling driven orbital-selective doping effect in Sr 2 Ru 1 - x Ir x O 4

Orbital-selective phenomena in mutliorbital systems have received much attention due to their uniqueness as well as possible connections to other phenomena. As orbital-selectiveness is mostly related to the crystal structure, finding a new control parameter other than structure would be of significant importance. Here in this paper we report discovery of an orbital-selective doping effect in Sr 2 Ru 1 - x Ir x O 4 (SRIO). Our systematic electronic structure study of SRIO reveals an anomalous orbital-selective doping effect and concomitant Lifshitz transitions (LTs) in the γ band. With the help of a tight-binding calculation, we find that the orbital-selective doping effect is due to variation in the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) strength. Our findings not only elucidate the mechanism of LTs in the γ band in SRIO but may also open new avenues for novel SOC-controlled orbital-selective phenomena.

Strongly adhesive dry transfer technique for van der Waals heterostructure

That one can stack van der Waals materials with atomically sharp interfaces has provided a new material platform of constructing heterostructures. The technical challenge of mechanical stacking is picking up the exfoliated atomically thin materials after mechanical exfoliation without chemical and mechanical degradation. Chemically inert hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) has been widely used for encapsulating and picking up vdW materials. However, due to the relatively weak adhesion of hBN, assembling vdW heterostructures based on hBN has been limited. Here, we report a new dry transfer technique. We used two vdW semiconductors (ZnPS 3 and CrPS 4 ) to pick up and encapsulate layers for vdW heterostructures, which otherwise are known to be hard to fabricate. By combining with optimized polycaprolactone (PCL) providing strong adhesion, we demonstrated various vertical heterostructure devices, including quasi-2D superconducting NbSe 2 Josephson junctions with atomically clean interface. The versatility of the PCL-based vdW stacking method provides a new route for assembling complex 2D vdW materials without interfacial degradation.

Constructing Polymorphic Nanodomains in BaTiO 3 Films via Epitaxial Symmetry Engineering

Ferroelectric materials owning a polymorphic nanodomain structure usually exhibit colossal susceptibilities to external mechanical, electrical, and thermal stimuli, thus holding huge potential for relevant applications. Despite the success of traditional strategies by means of complex composition design, alternative simple methods such as strain engineering have been intensively sought to achieve a polymorphic nanodomain state in lead-free, simple-composition ferroelectric oxides in recent years. Here, a nanodomain configuration with morphed structural phases is realized in an epitaxial BaTiO3 film grown on a (111)-oriented SrTiO3 substrate. Using a combination of experimental and theoretical approaches, it is revealed that a threefold rotational symmetry element enforced by the epitaxial constraint along the [111] direction of BaTiO3 introduces considerable instability among intrinsic tetragonal, orthorhombic, and rhombohedral phases. Such phase degeneracy induces ultrafine ferroelectric nanodomains (1-10 nm) with low-angle domain walls, which exhibit significantly enhanced dielectric and piezoelectric responses compared to the (001)-oriented BaTiO3 film with uniaxial ferroelectricity. Therefore, the finding highlights the important role of epitaxial symmetry in domain engineering of oxide ferroelectrics and facilitates the development of dielectric capacitors and piezoelectric devices.
