CROCUS Air Quality Data at Argonne National Laboratory Prairie Site

The AQT (Vaisala AQT530) instrument provides observations on meteorological conditions, including particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), gas species concentrations (NO, NO2, O3, CO), and environment temperature and moisture. These measurements are critical for understanding air quality. These measurements are useful for understanding changes in aerosol properties, air quality research, and comparing to model experiments especially in urban environments. These measurements are collected at the Argonne Testbed for Multiscale Observational Science (ATMOS), a prairie field site at Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont, Illinois. Data is available in the netCDF data format, we encourage data users review documentation through Project Pythia to understand how to work with netCDF data https://foundations.projectpythia.org/core/data-formats/netcdf-cf.html. Each file contains one day's worth of data (24 hours, starting at 0000 UTC). The data is aggregated into daily frequency to make it easier to process multiple days, and compress the higher-resolution fields. File naming convention includes the project (CROCUS), location (atmos), data level (raw, a1), date (year, month, day), and hour (0000).

CROCUS Weather Data at Chicago State University Prairie Site

Vaisala WXT sensor is an all-in-one weather instrument that provides 6 of the most important weather parameters: barometric pressure, temperature, relative humidity, rainfall, wind speed and direction. Temperature, pressure, relative humidity, and rainfall are sampled at 1 second frequency, while wind speed/direction is measured at ten per second (10Hz) frequency. These measurements are useful for looking at characterizing local weather, identifying unique weather events, and studying local turbulence, especially given the high temporal resolution of the wind measurements. These measurements are collected at Chicago State University (CSU) at a prarie site on campus in Chicago, Illinois. Diagnosing up-scattered deuterium–tritium fusion neutrons produced in burning plasmas at the National Ignition Facility (invited)

In the push to higher performance fusion plasmas, two critical quantities to diagnose are α-heat deposition that can improve and impurities mixed into the plasma that can limit performance. In high-density, highly collisional inertial confinement fusion burning plasmas, there is a significant probability that deuterium–tritium (DT) fusion products, 14.1 MeV neutrons and 3.5 MeV α-particles, will collide with and deposit energy onto (“up-scatter”) surrounding deuterium and tritium fuel ions. These up-scattered D and T ions can then undergo fusion while in-flight and produce an up-scattered neutron (15–30 MeV). These reaction-in-flight (RIF) neutrons can then be uniquely identified in the measured neutron energy spectrum. Further, the magnitude, shape, and relative size of this spectral feature can inform models of stopping-power in the DT plasma and hence is directly proportional to α-heat deposition. In addition, the RIF spectrum can be related to mix into the burning fuel, particularly relevant for high-Z shell and other emerging National Ignition Facility platforms. The neutron time-of-flight diagnostic upgrades needed to obtain this small signal, ~10 –5 times the primary DT neutron peak, will be discussed. Results from several gain > 1 implosions will be shown and compared to previous RIF spectra. Finally, comparisons of experimental data to a simplified computational model will be made.

Technique for an improved and time-resolved carbon areal density measurement with a single channel diagnostic for inertial confinement fusion

Measurement of the areal density and velocity of the carbon ablator shell during peak burn in inertial confinement fusion give powerful information on the state of the ablator and where in the trajectory of implosion it reaches peak burn. Detailed comparison of the absolute densities and velocities of the carbon in implosions has been prevented by the limited ability to resolve shot-to-shot variation within a shot series or within a campaign. Here, a new approach using a single, ultra fast (~10 ps) gamma ray channel can massively reduce uncertainties and will provide insights on improvements to target and drive variables. Small improvements in these experimental design parameters may result in much greater yields.

Forward Modeling of Gamma Reaction History Signatures From Anticipated Deuterium-Tritium Filled MagLIF Implosions on Sandia’s Z-Machine

Nuclear reaction history measurements provide a bang time and burn width of Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) implosions and are essential for understanding implosion performance to constrain ICF capsule design. When fusion fuel contains Deuterium (D) and Tritium (T) gas, reaction history is informed by measuring the 16.75 MeV gamma rays generated from the D(T,γ) 5 He reaction. Such DT based reaction history measurements have not been made on the Magnetized Laser Inertial Fusion (MagLIF) platform on Sandia’s Z-Machine due to the lack of Tritium being used. The recent development of ICF implosions with tritiated fuel will open the possibility of measuring the gamma reaction history on the Z-Machine. A forward model of the Gamma Reaction History diagnostic on Z (GRH-Z) has been developed using the MCNP6.3 (Monte-Carlo N-Particle) radiation transport code. The model included the Z-Machine geometry of interest to characterize the impact of neutron induced gamma rays on the DT reaction history measurements. In addition, the impulse response functions of the GRH-Z diagnostic to understand the temporal response of the detector, and the minimum yields required to make a reaction history measurement were calculated. This approach also predicted that with T 2 gas doping of MagLIF implosions a reaction history may be made for high performance shots >8e12-2.4e13 depending on the chosen threshold for the detector, with a maximum signal to background ratio of 25%. It was found that for long duration ICF implosions that additional collimation will be needed to prevent the neutron induced gamma rays from modifying the shape of the measured DT reaction history curve.

Doppler spectra from ARM Doppler Lidar during ARMing the Edge

There is a need for long-term observations of cloud and precipitation fall speeds in validating and improving rainfall forecasts from climate models. To this end, the U.S. Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility Southern Great Plains (SGP) site at Lamont, Oklahoma, hosts five ARM Doppler lidars that can measure cloud and aerosol properties. In particular, the ARM Doppler lidars record Doppler spectra that contain information about the fall speeds of cloud and precipitation particles. In this dataset, we provide the Doppler spectra from the ARM Doppler lidar at C1 recorded in April 2022 during ARMing the Edge.

ARMing the Edge: Designing Edge Computing–Capable Machine Learning Algorithms to Target ARM Doppler Lidar Processing

Abstract There is a need for long-term observations of cloud and precipitation fall speeds in validating and improving rainfall forecasts from climate models. However, due to bandwidth and storage constraints, the Doppler spectra are not routinely stored. This calls for the automation of cloud and rain detection in ARM Doppler lidar data so that the spectral data in clouds can be selectively saved and further analyzed. During the ARMing the Edge field experiment, a Waggle node capable of performing machine learning applications in situ was deployed at the ARM SGP site for this purpose. In this paper, we develop and test four algorithms for the Waggle node to automatically classify ARM Doppler lidar data. We demonstrate that supervised learning using a ResNet50-based classifier will classify 97.6% of the clear-air images and 94.7% of cloudy images correctly, outperforming traditional peak detection methods. We also show that a convolutional autoencoder paired with k -means clustering identifies 10 clusters in the ARM Doppler lidar data. Three clusters correspond to mostly clear conditions with scattered high clouds, and seven others correspond to cloudy conditions with varying cloud-base heights.

First large capsule implosions in a frustum-shaped hohlraum

Here, we report on the first indirect-drive implosions driven by a dual conical frustum-shaped hohlraum denoted “frustraum” and the experimental tuning campaigns leading up to two layered implosions. The campaign used 1.2 and 1.4 mm inner radius high density carbon (HDC) capsules and represented the largest HDC capsules to be imploded on the National Ignition Facility via indirect drive. Several techniques were successfully implemented to control the Legendre mode 2 capsule symmetry of the implosions, including changing the wall angle of the frustraum, which is not possible with cylindrical hohlraums. A mode 4 feature was observed and its implications for hotspot mix discussed. Two layered implosions were conducted with 1.2 mm inner radius capsules, the latter of which achieved the highest layered capsule absorbed energy on the National Ignition Facility using only 1.74 MJ of laser energy. The layered implosion results, along with generalized Lawson parameters, suggest that increasing the energy absorbed by the capsule at the expense of long coast times makes it more challenging to achieve ignition and that further reducing coast time (time between end of laser pulse and bang time) closer to the 1 ns level is warranted to improve the areal density and make it easier to achieve the hotspot temperature, alpha heating, and yield amplification required for ignition.
