The inverse problem of the optimal regulator.

The inverse problem of the optimal regulator is considered for a general class of multi-input systems with integral-type performance indices. A new phase variable canonical form is shown to be convenient for this analysis. The advantage of the canonical form is to separate the state variables into subvectors of directly controlled, indirectly controlled, and uncontrollable components. Necessary and sufficient conditions for optimized performance indices are given. With the nonlinearities of the system restricted to functions of the directly controlled state variables, additional results are developed about the nonnegative property of optimized loss functions.

Liapunov functions for non-linear difference equation stability analysis.

Liapunov functions to determine the stability of non-linear autonomous difference equations can be developed through the use of auxiliary exact difference equations. For this purpose definitions are introduced for the gradient of an implicit function of a discrete variable, a principal sum, a definite sum and an exact difference equation, and a theorem for exactness of a difference form is proved. Examples illustrate the procedure.

Stability of distributed parameter systems.

A theorem is derived for the stability of solutions of general linear partial differential equations. A norm of the state space in the form of multiple integrals over the spatial domain is used for the Liapunov functional. Theorems and lemmas are also given for linear time-invariant constant coefficient distributed parameter systems, a class of nonlinear distributed parameter systems and for others with a Lure-type nonlinearity. The theorem conditions are similar to those known for corresponding ordinary differential equations but with operators replacing matrices.
