Bumper-protected laminated spacecraft mainwalls

A study was made of the meteoroid impact resistance of bumper-protected mainwalls of both solid aluminum and polycarbonate-aluminum laminates. Semi-empirical models of the debris cloud and stress waves were formulated. Results indicated that a laminated mainwall affords greater impact resistance than a solid aluminum mainwall of the same weight.

Spallation and fracture resulting from reflected and intersecting stress waves.

Discussion of the effects of stress waves produced in solid by explosions or high-velocity impacts. These waves rebound from free surfaces in the form of tensile waves that are capable of causing internal fractures or spallation of the material. The high-speed framing camera is shown to be an important tool for observing the stress waves and fracture in transparent targets, and its photographs provide valuable information on the mechanics of fracture.

A dynamic polariscope for stress wave analysis.

A polariscope for the study of the propagation of stress waves in birefringent sheets is described. Sensitive, fast-responding photomultiplier tubes, a laser light source, and a multiple channel oscilloscope were used for the simultaneous recording of the stress-optic data at several points of the target following impact. A method of separation of stresses and the computation of displacement, strain, and stress is given.
