Compound-Nucleus and Doorway-State Decays of β -Delayed Neutron Emitters K 51 , 52 , 53

We investigated decays of K 51 , 52 , 53 at the ISOLDE Decay Station at CERN in order to understand the mechanism of the β -delayed neutron-emission ( β n ) process. The experiment quantified neutron and γ -ray emission paths for each precursor. We used this information to test the hypothesis, first formulated by Bohr in 1939, that neutrons in the β n process originate from the structureless “compound nucleus.” The data are consistent with this postulate for most of the observed decay paths. The agreement, however, is surprising because the compound-nucleus stage should not be achieved in the studied β decay due to insufficient excitation energy and level densities in the neutron emitter. In the K 53 β n decay, we found a preferential population of the first excited state in Ca 52 that contradicted Bohr’s hypothesis. The latter was interpreted as evidence for direct neutron emission sensitive to the structure of the neutron-unbound state. We propose that the observed nonstatistical neutron emission proceeds through the coupling with nearby doorway states that have large neutron-emission probabilities. The appearance of “compound-nucleus” decay is caused by the aggregated small contributions of multiple doorway states at higher excitation energy. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Core-excited states in 105 Cd

105 Cd was produced in the 96 Mo+ 12 C fusion/evaporation reaction, performed at NIPNE, Bucharest-Magurele, Romania. Various excited states of positive- and negative-parities were populated. Picosecond half-lives were measured by using the Differential Decay Curve Method (DDCM) method, allowing to control the side feeding of the states of interest. Further, new data were obtained for the half-lives of the 11/2 + , 15/2 - and 19/2 -105 Cd states. Reduced electric quadrupole transition strengths were calculated and compared to the neighboring odd-A and even-A cadmium nuclei. The particle-core weak coupling approach was used to interpret excited states of 105 Cd in the light of the new data.

Suppressed electric quadrupole collectivity in Si 32

Lying between O 16 and Ca 40 , the s d shell is well described by robust phenomenological and nuclear theories. In this work, however, we highlight an unexplained reduction in electric-quadrupole strength in the rare isotope Si 32 , studied through sub-barrier Coulomb excitation. It is found that the oblate nature of the deformation is well reproduced, while the absolute scale of quadrupole deformation, however, is inhibited by approximately a factor of 2 compared to theoretical predictions. Through comparison with shell-model and calculations, we present a number of possible explanations for this inhibited E 2 strength. By comparing the results of these calculations to multiple observables, we conclude that there is a reduced role for out-of-space excitations in Si 32 , resulting in a reduction in the corrections normally applied to both models. Monoenergetic neutron scattering on 238 U at Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory

In this report, we summarize the progress made in FY23 for experiments fielded at Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) of Duke University on the neutron scattering measurements of 238 U. The preliminary results on the elastic and inelastic reaction channels will be presented in addition to details of experiment and data analysis.

Evolution of the j - 1 anomalous states of the j - 3 multiplets

We report in the nuclear shell model the j -1 anomaly is associated with unusual ordering of the j and j -1 states of a j -3 split multiplet. In the mass regions placed away from the doubly magic nuclei, the j-1 levels are found to be below the respective j states. The anomalous ordering of the levels is most prominent in the silver isotopic chain, but a similar effect is observed also in other systems with pure three-hole configurations. The correlation between the Δ E = E j-1 - E j energy splitting, observed in some odd-mass nuclei, and the even-even core's 2 + level energy is well pronounced in the (28,50) neutron and proton shells and to a lesser extent in the lower and higher (20,28) and (50, 82)

Structure of the low-lying states in 99,101,103,105 Pd

In this work, the odd-mass 99-105 Pd nuclei were studied via 90-96 Zr( 12,13 C, xnγ) fusion/evaporation reactions. The beam was provided by the IFIN-HH Tandem accelerator at energies of approximately 50 MeV. Emitted gamma rays were detected by the hybrid multidetector system RoSphere. The structure of the low-lying excited states in 99-105 Pd and their gamma-decay pattern are discussed in the framework of the rigid triaxial rotor plus particle model, providing a reasonable description of the low-lying level energies, electromagnetic transition rates, and magnetic moments.
