Fluctuating Ru trimer precursor to a two-stage electronic transition in RuP

Superconductivity in binary ruthenium pnictides occurs proximal to and upon suppression of a non-magnetic ground state, preceded by a pseudogap phase associated with Fermi surface instability, and its critical temperature, T c , is maximized around the pseudogap quantum critical point. By analogy with isoelectronic iron based counterparts, antiferromagnetic fluctuations became ''usual suspects" as putative mediators of superconducting pairing. Here we report on a high temperature local symmetry breaking in RuP, nonsuperconducting parent of the maximum- T c branch of these novel superconductors, revealed by combined nanostructure-sensitive powder and single crystal X-ray total scattering analyses. Large local distortions of Ru chains associated with orbital-charge trimerization, further assembled into hexamers, exist above the two-stage electronic transition in RuP. In the pseudogap regime the precursors order with distortions retaining their strength, whereas they acquire spin-singlet characteristics which dramatically enhances the distortion as the nonmagnetic ground state establishes. The precursors enable the nonmagnetic ground state and presumed complex oligomerization, and the relevance of pseudogap fluctuations for superconductivity emerges as a distinct prospect. As a transition metal system in which partial d-manifold filling combined with high crystal symmetry promotes electronic instabilities, this represents a further example of local electronic precursors underpinning the macroscopic collective behavior of quantum materials.

On single-crystal total scattering data reduction and correction protocols for analysis in direct space

Data reduction and correction steps and processed data reproducibility in the emerging single-crystal total-scattering-based technique of three-dimensional differential atomic pair distribution function (3D-ΔPDF) analysis are explored. All steps from sample measurement to data processing are outlined using a crystal of CuIr 2 S 4 as an example, studied in a setup equipped with a high-energy X-ray beam and a flat-panel area detector. Computational overhead as pertains to data sampling and the associated data-processing steps is also discussed. Various aspects of the final 3D-ΔPDF reproducibility are explicitly tested by varying the data-processing order and included steps, and by carrying out a crystal-to-crystal data comparison. Situations in which the 3D-ΔPDF is robust are identified, and caution against a few particular cases which can lead to inconsistent 3D-ΔPDFs is noted. Although not all the approaches applied herein will be valid across all systems, and a more in-depth analysis of some of the effects of the data-processing steps may still needed, the methods collected herein represent the start of a more systematic discussion about data processing and corrections in this field.

Experimental Verification of Ir 5d Orbital States and Atomic Structures in Highly Active Amorphous Iridium Oxide Catalysts

In iridium oxide catalysts, the electronic states whose energies are in the range of energetics and charge transfer kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) originate from the Ir 5d orbital states. However, the understanding of the atomic structures and orbital states underlying catalytic reactivity in amorphous iridium oxide oxygen evolving catalysts (Ir-OECs) is incomplete compared to that of crystalline oxides, owing to a lack of direct experimental verification. Here, we present experimental approaches using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) to directly access Ir 5d orbital excitations at the Ir L 3 edge and atomic pair distribution function (PDF) measurements to characterize electronic and coordination structures at the atomic scale. The so-called iridium blue layer (IrBL) and IrO x were formed from the organometallic precursor complex [Cp*Ir(H 2 O) 3 ]SO 4 and the inorganic precursor IrCl 3 , respectively. Ex situ IrBL and IrO x films for RIXS and PDF measurements were prepared by conditioning electrodeposited films at a low voltage. The incident energy RIXS profile of IrO x exhibited extra weak resonantly enhanced excitation below 2 eV energy loss. The feature was clearly different from a single high-energy excitation above 3 eV of IrBL related to the interband transition between π- and σ-antibonding states. The atomic structure refinement based on PDF measurements revealed the atomic structure domains to have edge- and corner-shared IrO 6 octahedra with trigonal-type distortion. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations guided by the refined atomic structures shed light on the electronic structure corresponding to experimental results, including insulating and metallic phases in ex situ IrBL and IrO x films, respectively. Our study establishes different Ir 5d orbital states and atomic structures in two amorphous Ir oxide OER catalysts in their reduction states.

Dual Orbital Degeneracy Lifting in a Strongly Correlated Electron System

The local structure of NaTiSi 2 O 6 is examined across its Ti-dimerization orbital-assisted Peierls transition at 210 K. An atomic pair distribution function approach evidences local symmetry breaking preexisting far above the transition. The analysis unravels that, on warming, the dimers evolve into a short range orbital degeneracy lifted (ODL) state of dual orbital character, persisting up to at least 490 K. The ODL state is correlated over the length scale spanning ~ 6 sites of the Ti zigzag chains. Results imply that the ODL phenomenology extends to strongly correlated electron systems.

Densification of non-radioactive porous siliceous particles loaded with cesium potassium copper hexacyanoferrate by spark plasma sintering

In the development of a conditioning process for cesium-bearing sorbents from the decontamination of aqueous waste streams, the treatment of a granular material composed of (Cs,K) 2 CuFe(CN) 6 loaded onto mesoporous silica particles has been investigated in an additive-free two-step conditioning process involving (i) calcination at 1000 °C to remove volatile species and (ii) densification by spark plasma sintering. A 92.0 % dense pellet was obtained after 10 min sintering at 850 °C under 100 MPa. Density and microstructural measurements indicate that densification is first driven by the viscous flow of a vitreous phase containing Cs, formed during calcination. Additionally, the density of the sample then increases further during sintering by grain boundary diffusion. However, a limited but non negligible part of cesium is lost during densification.
