Vortex in superconducting thin-film strips of arbitrary width

We report the currents and field distributions of a vortex in a thin superconducting strip of a width W are considered. It is shown that unlike infinite films where the vortex field crosses the film only in one direction (say, from the half-space under the film to the half-space above it), in strips (as well as in finite size film samples of any shape) the field lines go back to the lower half-space not only out of the sample but also through certain strip parts. The strip patches where the magnetic lines 'dive' back to the space under the strip are situated mostly near the strip edges, at the strip and out of it. The magnetic flux through the strip associated with the vortex is shown to be less than the flux quantum and depends on the vortex position. The suppression of the vortex flux is strong in narrow strips with W $\ll$ Λ = 2λ 2 /d where λ is the bulk London penetration depth and d is the film thickness. The vortex energy scales roughly with W/Λ and depends on vortex position.

Disorder-dependent slopes of the upper critical field in nodal and nodeless superconductors

In this work we study the slopes of the upper critical field S = ∂H c2 /∂T at the superconducting transition temperature T c in anisotropic superconductors with transport (nonmagnetic) scattering employing the Ginzburg-Landau theory, developed for this case by Pokrovsky and Pokrovsky [Phys. Rev. B 54, 13275 (1996)]. We find unexpected behavior of the slopes for a d -wave superconductor and, in a more general case, of materials with line nodes in the order parameter. Specifically, the presence of line nodes causes S to decrease with increasing nonmagnetic scattering parameter P = ℏ/2πT c0 τ (T c0 is for the clean limit, τ is the scattering time), unlike the nodeless case where the slope increases. In a pure d -wave case, the slope changes from decreasing to increasing when the scattering parameter approaches P ≈ 0.91 P crit , where P crit ≈ 0.28, at which T c → 0, which implies the existence of a “gapless” state in d -wave superconductors with transport scattering in the interval, 0.91 P crit < P < P crit . Furthermore, we consider the mixed (s + d)-wave order parameter with four nodes on a cylindrical Fermi surface when the d part is dominant, or no nodes at all when the s-wave phase dominates. We find that the presence of nodes causes the slope S(P) to decrease initially with increasing P, whereas in the nodeless state, S(P) monotonically increases. Therefore, relatively straightforward measurements of the disorder dependence of the slope of H c2 at T c can help distinguish between nodal and nodeless order parameters, which is particularly useful for quickly assessing newly discovered superconductors.

Magnetism and its coexistence with superconductivity in CaK(Fe 0.949 Ni 0.051 ) 4 As 4 : Muon spin rotation/relaxation studies

Here, the magnetic response of Ca K ( Fe 0.949 Ni 0.051 ) 4 As 4 was investigated by means of the muon spin rotation/relaxation. The long-range commensurate magnetic order sets in below the Néel temperature T N = 50.0 ( 5 ) K. The density-functional theory calculations have identified three possible muon stopping sites. The experimental data were found to be consistent with only one type of magnetic structure, namely, the long-range magnetic spin-vortex-crystal order with the hedgehog motif within the a b plane and the antiferromagnetic stacking along the c direction. The value of the ordered magnetic moment at T ≈ 3 K was estimated to be m Fe = 0.38 ( 11 ) μ B ( μ B is the Bohr magneton). A microscopic coexistence of magnetic and superconducting phases accompanied by a reduction of the magnetic order parameter below the superconducting transition temperature T c ≃ 9 K is observed. Comparison with 11, 122, and 1144 families of Fe-based pnictides points to existence of correlation between the reduction of the magnetic order parameter at T → 0 and the ratio of the transition temperatures T c / T N . Such correlations were found to be described by Machida's model for coexistence of itinerant spin-density-wave magnetism and superconductivity [K. Machida, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 50 , 2195 (1981) ; S. L. Bud'ko et al. , Phys. Rev. B 98 , 144520 (2018) ].

Vortex Cores in Narrow Thin-Film Strips

In this work, we study vortex current distributions in narrow thin-film superconducting strips with the help of analytic expression of the vortex current derived within the London theory. Using definition of the vortex core “boundary” as a curve where the current reaches the depairing value, vortex core size and shape are estimated as a function of vortex position in the strip. We show that the core size near the strip edges is smaller than in the rest of the strip, indicating that the Bardeen–Stephen flux-flow resistivity should be reduced near the edges. Moreover, at elevated temperatures, when the depairing current is small, the vortex core may extend to the whole strip width, thus turning into an edge-to-edge phase-slip line.
