Black Carbon Measurements in SOLVE-2

Droplet Measurement Technologies (DMT), under funding from NASA s Radiation Sciences Program, participated in the SOLVE II field campaign with measurements of light absorbing particles (black carbon and metals). These measurements were made with the Single Particle Soot Photometer (SP-2) on the NASA DC-8. The SP-2 is a new measurement technique that was developed under the SBIR program with funding from the Office of Naval Research. The original instrument suite for the DC-8 did not include the SP-2 and its addition and operation during SOLVE II was intended solely as a means to test its functionality and prepare it for future flight operations. For this reason it required several flights in the early stages of the project to tune its operation and fix some problems that arose. During the flights of January 26, 29, and 30, and February 2, 4 and 6, however, it worked as designed and acquired credible data.

Icing Sensor Probe

Aircraft icing is a serious safety problem for the general aviation and some commuter transport airplanes. There has been tremendous growth in the commuter aviation industry in the last few years, Since these type of aircraft generally operate at lower altitudes they consequently spend a far greater proportion of their time operating in icing conditions. For the past thirty years airborne and ground based facilities have relied primarily on two types of cloud physics instrumentation to measure the characteristics of icing clouds: hot wire liquid water content probes and laser based particle sizing probes for the measurement of water droplet size. The instrumentation is severely limited by the technology that was developed during the 1970's and is quite large in size. The goal of this research is to develop one instrument with a wide bandwidth, better response time, higher resolution, user selectability, and small and lightweight. NASA Glenn Research Center, Droplet Measurement Technology, and Meteorology Society of Canada have developed a collaborative effort to develop such an instrument. This paper describes the development and test results of the prototype Icing Sensor Probe.

Fluorometric method for the determination of gas-phase hydrogen peroxide

The fluorometric gas-phase hydrogen peroxide procedure is based on the technique used by Lazrus et. al. for the determination of H2O2 in the liquid phase. The analytical method utilizes the reaction of H2O2 with horseradish peroxidase and p-hydroxphenylacetic acid (POPHA) to form the fluorescent dimer of POPHA. The analytical reaction responds stoichiometrically to both H2O2 and some organic hydroperoxides. To discriminate H2O2 from organic hydroperoxides, catalase is used to preferentially destroy H2O2. Using a dual-channel flow system the H2O2 concentration is determined by difference.
