Magnetic properties of the quasi-XY Shastry-Sutherland magnet ER 2 Be 2 SiO 7

Polycrystalline and single-crystal samples of the insulating Shastry-Sutherland compound Er 2 ⁢Be 2 ⁢SiO 7 were synthesized via a solid-state reaction and the floating zone method, respectively. The crystal structure, Er single-ion anisotropy, zero-field magnetic ground state, and magnetic phase diagrams along high-symmetry crystallographic directions were investigated with bulk measurement techniques, x-ray and neutron diffraction, and neutron spectroscopy. Here, we establish that Er 2 ⁢Be 2 ⁢SiO 7 crystallizes in a tetragonal space group with planes of orthogonal Er dimers and a strong preference for the Er moments to lie in the local plane perpendicular to each dimer bond. We also find that this system has a noncollinear ordered ground state in zero field with a transition temperature of 0.841 K consisting of antiferromagnetic dimers and in-plane moments. Finally, we mapped out the H-T phase diagrams for Er 2 ⁢Be 2 ⁢SiO 7 along the directions H ∥ [001], [100], and [110]. While an increasing in-plane field simply induces a phase transition to a field-polarized phase, we identify three metamagnetic transitions in the H ∥ [001] case. Single-crystal neutron diffraction results reveal that the H ∥ [001] phase diagram can be explained predominantly by the expected field-induced behavior of classical, anisotropic moments, although the microscopic origin of one phase requires further investigation.

Stripe magnetic order and field-induced quantum criticality in the perfect triangular-lattice antiferromagnet CsCeSe 2

The two-dimensional triangular-lattice antiferromagnet (TLAF) is a textbook example of frustrated magnetic systems. Despite its simplicity, the TLAF model exhibits a highly rich and complex magnetic phase diagram, featuring numerous distinct ground states that can be stabilized through frustrated next-nearest-neighbor couplings or anisotropy. In this paper, we report low-temperature magnetic properties of the TLAF material CsCeSe 2 . The inelastic neutron scattering (INS) together with specific heat measurements and density functional theory calculations of crystalline electric field suggest that the ground state of Ce ions is a Kramers doublet with strong easy-plane anisotropy. Elastic neutron scattering measurements demonstrate the presence of stripe-yz magnetic order that develops below T N = 0.35K, with the zero-field ordered moment of m Ce ≈ 0.65μ B . Application of magnetic field first increases the ordering temperature by about 20% at the intermediate field region and eventually suppresses the stripe order in favor of the field-polarized ferromagnetic state via a continuous quantum phase transition (QPT). The field-induced response demonstrates sizable anisotropy for different in-plane directions, B ∥ a and B ⊥ ⁢a, which indicates the presence of bond-dependent coupling in the spin Hamiltonian. As a result, we further show theoretically that the presence of anisotropic bond-dependent interactions can change the universality class of QPT for B ∥ a and B ⊥ ⁢a.

Quantum-to-classical crossover in generalized spin systems: Temperature-dependent spin dynamics of FeI 2

Simulating quantum spin systems at finite temperatures is an open challenge in many-body physics. This work studies the temperature-dependent spin dynamics of a pivotal compound, FeI 2 , to determine if universal quantum effects can be accounted for by a phenomenological renormalization of the dynamical spin structure factor $S$(q, $ω$) measured by inelastic neutron scattering. Renormalization schemes based on the quantum-to-classical correspondence principle are commonly applied at low temperatures to the harmonic oscillators describing normal modes. However, it is not clear how to extend this renormalization to arbitrarily high temperatures. Here we introduce a temperature-dependent normalization of the classical moments, whose magnitude is determined by imposing the quantum sum rule, e.g., $∫$ $dωd$q$S$ ($q, ω$) = $N$ $S$ $S$ ($S$ + 1)for $N$ $S$ dipolar magnetic moments. We show that this simple renormalization scheme significantly improves the agreement between the calculated and measured $S$(q, $ω$) for FeI 2 at all temperatures. In conclusion, due to the coupled dynamics of dipolar and quadrupolar moments in that material, this renormalization procedure is extended to classical theories based on SU(3) coherent states, and by extension, to any SU($N$) coherent state representation of local multipolar moments.

Single-ion properties of the transverse-field Ising model material CoNb 2 O 6

We report CoNb 2 O 6 is one of the few materials that is known to approximate the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model (1D-TFIM) near its quantum critical point. It has been inferred that Co 2+ acts as a pseudospin 1/2 with anisotropic exchange interactions that are largely Ising-like, enabling the realization of the TFIM. However, the behavior of CoNb 2 O 6 is known to diverge from the ideal TFIM under transverse magnetic fields that are far from the quantum critical point, requiring the consideration of additional anisotropic, bond-dependent (Kitaev-like) terms in the microscopic pseudospin-1/2 Hamiltonian. These terms are expected to be controlled in part by single-ion physics, namely the wave function for the pseudospin-1/2 angular momentum doublet. Here, we present the results of both inelastic neutron scattering measurements and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy on CoNb 2 O 6 , which elucidate the single-ion physics of Co 2+ in CoNb 2 O 6 for the first time. We find that the system is well-described by an intermediate spin-orbit coupled Hamiltonian, and the ground state is a well-isolated Kramers doublet with an anisotropic g tensor. We provide the approximate wave functions for this doublet, which we expect will be useful in theoretical investigations of the anisotropic exchange interactions.

Collective excitations in the tetravalent lanthanide honeycomb antiferromagnet

Thermomagnetic and inelastic neutron-scattering measurements on Na 2 PrO 3 are reported. This material is an antiferromagnetic honeycomb magnet based on the tetravalent lanthanide Pr 4+ and has been proposed to host dominant antiferromagnetic Kitaev interactions. These measurements reveal magnetic fluctuations in Na 2 PrO 3 below an energy of 2 meV as well as crystal-field excitations around 230 meV. Furthermore, the latter energy is comparable to the scale of the spin-orbit interaction and explains both the very small effective moment of around 1.0μB per Pr 4+ and the difficulty to uncover any static magnetic scattering below the ordering transition at T N = 4.6 K. By comparing the low-energy magnetic excitations in Na 2 PrO 3 to those of the isostructural spin-only compound, Na 2 TbO 3 , a microscopic model of exchange interactions is developed that implicates dominant and surprisingly large Heisenberg exchange interactions J≈1.1(1) meV. Although antiferromagnetic Kitaev interactions with K≤0.2J cannot be excluded, the inelastic neutron-scattering data of Na 2 PrO 3 is best explained with a Δ=1.22 easy-axis XXZ exchange anisotropy.

High-field spin-flop state in green dioptase

The high-field magnetic properties and magnetic order of the gem mineral green dioptase Cu 6 [Si 6 O 18 ] .6 H 2 O have been studied by means of single-crystal neutron diffraction in magnetic fields up to 21 T and magnetization measurements up to 30 T. In zero field, the Cu 2+ moments in the antiferromagnetic chains are oriented along the c axis with a small off-axis tilt. For a field applied parallel to the c axis, the magnetization shows a spin-flop-like transition at B*=12.2 T at 1.5 K. Neutron diffraction experiments show a smooth behavior in the intensities of the magnetic reflections without any change in the periodicity of the magnetic structure. Bulk and microscopic observations are well described by a model of ferromagnetically coupled antiferromagnetic X X Z spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chains, taking into account a change of the local easy-axis direction. We demonstrate that the magnetic structure evolves smoothly from a deformed Néel state at low fields to a deformed spin-flop state in a high field via a strong crossover around B*. The results are generalized for different values of interchain coupling and spin anisotropy.

Magnetic exchange interactions in the van der Waals layered antiferromagnet MnPSe 3

Two-dimensional van der Waals compounds with magnetic ions on a honeycomb lattice are hosts to a variety of exotic behavior. The magnetic interactions in one such compound, MnPSe 3 , are investigated with elastic and inelastic neutron scattering. Magnetic excitations are observed in the magnetically ordered regime and persist to temperatures well above the ordering temperature, T N =74K, consistent with low dimensional magnetic interactions. The inelastic neutron scattering results allow a model spin Hamiltonian to be presented that includes dominant intralayer interactions of J 1ab =0.45 meV, J 2ab =0.03 meV, J 3ab =0.19 meV, consistent with theoretical predictions. Furthermore, despite the quasi-2D behavior, appreciable interlayer interactions of J c =0.031(5) meV are required to model the data. No evidence for anisotropy in the form of a spin gap is observed in the data collected. The measurements on MnPSe 3 are contrasted with those on MnPS 3 and reveal a large increase in the interlayer exchange interaction in MnPSe 3 that may stabilize the similar ordering temperatures in the bulk compounds.
