The ladder and readout cables of intermediate silicon strip detector for sPHENIX

A new silicon-strip-type detector was developed for precise charged-particle tracking in the central rapidity region of heavy ion collisions. A new detector and collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory is sPHENIX, which is a major upgrade of the PHENIX detector. The intermediate tracker (INTT) is part of the advanced tracking system of the sPHENIX detector complex together with a CMOS monolithic-active-pixel-sensor based silicon-pixel vertex detector, a time-projection chamber, and a micromegas-based detector. The INTT detector is barrel shaped and comprises 56 silicon ladders. Two different types of strip sensors of 78 micron pitch and 320 micron thick are mounted on each half of a silicon ladder. Each strip sensor is segmented into 8 × 2 and 5 × 2 blocks with lengths of 16 and 20 mm. Strips are read out with a silicon strip-readout (FPHX) chip. In order to transmit massive data from the FPHX to the down stream readout electronics card (ROC), a series of long and high speed readout cables were developed. This document focuses on the silicon ladder, the readout cables, and the ROC of the INTT. The radiation hardness is studied for some parts of the INTT devices in the last part of this document, since the INTT employed some materials from the technology frontier of the industry whose radiation hardness is not necessarily well known.

Ionospheric Response to the Total Solar Eclipse of 22 July 2009 as Deduced from VLBI and GPS Data

A total solar eclipse occurred over China at latitudes of about 30 N on the morning of 22 July 2009, providing a unique opportunity to investigate the influence of the sun on the earth's upper ionosphere. GPS observations from Shanghai GPS Local Network and VLBI observations from stations Shanghai, Urumqi, and Kashima were used to observe the response of TEC to the total solar eclipse. From the GPS data reduction, the sudden decrease of TEC at the time of the eclipse, amounting to 2.8 TECU, and gradual increase of TEC after the eclipse were found by analyzing the diurnal variations. More distinctly, the variations of TEC were studied along individual satellite passes. The delay in reaching the minimum level of TEC with the maximum phase of eclipse was 5-10 min. Besides, we also compared the ionospheric activity derived from different VLBI stations with the GPS results and found a strong correlation between them.

Circadian oscillations of cytosolic and chloroplastic free calcium in plants

Tobacco and Arabidopsis plants, expressing a transgene for the calcium-sensitive luminescent protein apoaequorin, revealed circadian oscillations in free cytosolic calcium that can be phase-shifted by light-dark signals. When apoaequorin was targeted to the chloroplast, circadian chloroplast calcium rhythms were likewise observed after transfer of the seedlings to constant darkness. Circadian oscillations in free calcium concentrations can be expected to control many calcium-dependent enzymes and processes accounting for circadian outputs. Regulation of calcium flux is therefore fundamental to the organization of circadian systems.

Evolution of the solar wind acceleration region during 1990-1994

The single-station measurements of interplanetary scintillation (IPS) at 2 and 8 GHz have been made at the Kashima Space Research Center of the Communications Research Laboratory in the period from 1990 to 1994. These IPS data are used to study the radial distribution of solar wind velocity and density fluctuations near the sun (i.e. 10-70 Rs), and the long-term variation in these properties. The IPS co-spectrum technique is applied here to estimate the solar wind velocity. Derived velocities show that the solar wind gains a speed significantly in the radial range from 10 to 30 Rs (solar radii). which is much farther than the source surface of the thermally driven solar wind model. From the scintillation index analysis. it is found that the radial fall of density fluctuations is well described by the power-law function. A series of IPS observations reveals that a pronounced change in velocity and turbulence level for this radial range occurs at the polar region of the sun during 1990-1994. That is, the high speed wind and the reduced turbulence region develop there as the solar activity declines. On the other hand, little long-term variation is observed for the solar wind acceleration region at a low latitude. From the comparison with He 1O83 nm observations. it is demonstrated that the change of the solar wind structure is closely linked with the evolution of the coronal hole on the solar surface.

Observations of micro-turbulence in the solar wind near the sun with interplanetary scintillation

Velocity and density turbulence of solar wind were inferred from interplanetary scintillation (IPS) observations at 2.3 GHz and 8.5 GHz using a single-antenna. The observations were made during September and October in 1992 - 1994. They covered the distance range between 5 and 76 solar radii (Rs). We applied the spectrum fitting method to obtain a velocity, an axial ratio, an inner scale and a power-law spectrum index. We examined the difference of the turbulence properties near the Sun between low-speed solar wind and high-speed solar wind. Both of solar winds showed acceleration at the distance range of 10 - 30 Rs. The radial dependence of anisotropy and spectrum index did not have significant difference between low-speed and high-speed solar winds. Near the sun, the radial dependence of the inner scale showed the separation from the linear relation as reported by previous works. We found that the inner scale of high-speed solar wind is larger than that of low-speed wind.

Statistical analysis of upflowing ion beam and conic distributions at DE 1 altitudes

Upflowing ion (UFI), beam, conic, and hybrid pitch angle distribution data obtained in the 8000-23,000-km altitude range by the energetic ion composition spectrometer of the DE 1 satellite during September 1981-June 1986 have been statistically analyzed. It is found that the source and transport mechanisms largely confine UFI to auroral field lines; no obvious one-to-one relationship is found between current direction and UFI source characteristics. O(+) is more efficiently accelerated than H(+) at the higher K(p) values.

Magnetic monopole search by 130 m(2)sr He gas proportional counter

A search experiment for cosmic ray magnetic monopoles was performed by means of atomic induction mechanism by using He mixture gas proportional counters of the calorimeter (130 square meters sr) at the center of the Akeno air shower array. In 3,482 hours operation no monopole candidate was observed. The upper limit of the monopole flux is 1.44 x 10 to the minus 13th power cm-z, sec -1, sr-1 (90% C.L.) for the velocity faster than 7 x 0.0001 c.
