Medium-Range Ordering in the Ionic Glass Electrolytes LiPON and LiSiPON

In this work, we provide an in-depth structural characterization of the amorphous ionic glasses LiPON and LiSiPON with high Li content. Based on ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, the structure of these materials is an inverted structure with either isolated polyanion tetrahedra or polyanion dimers in a Li+ matrix. Based on neutron scattering data, this type of inverted structure leads to a significant amount of medium-range ordering in the structure, as demonstrated by two sharp diffraction peaks and a periodic structural oscillation in the density function G(r). While this medium-range ordering is commonly observed in liquids and metallic glasses, it has not previously been observed in oxides. On a local scale, adding N and Si increases the number of anion bridges and polyanion dimer structures, leading to higher ionic conductivity. In the medium-range ordering, the addition of Si leads to more disorder in the polyanion substructure but a significant increase in the ordering of the O substructure. Finally, we demonstrate that this inverted structure with medium-range ordering results in a glassy material that is both mechanically stiff and ductile on the nanoscale.

Electronic structure manipulation via composition tuning for the development of highly conductive and acid-stable oxides

Exploring materials that simultaneously possess high conductivity and electrochemical stability is critical for various energy-conversion applications. In this study, our combined computations and experiments suggest the Mg–Ti–O chemical space for novel ternary oxide compounds offering high electrical conductivity and corrosion stability in acidic conditions to be potentially used as catalyst supporter of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. High electrical conductivity (6.09 × 10 -1 S cm -1 ) is achieved at room temperature by tuning the chemical composition of Mg 1-x Ti 2+x O 5 while still maintaining good corrosion stability (1.2 × 10 -4 mA cm -2 after six days) in acidic conditions. Furthermore, we discover that a reducing gas environment during the synthesis increases the Ti solubility in Mg 1-x Ti 2+x O 5 with a reduced valence state of Ti, thus resulting in high conductivity.

Spectral Denoising for Accelerated Analysis of Correlated Ionic Transport

Computation of correlated ionic transport properties from molecular dynamics in the Green-Kubo formalism is expensive, as one cannot rely on the affordable mean square displacement approach. We use spectral decomposition of the short-time ionic displacement covariance to learn a set of diffusion eigenmodes that encode the correlation structure and form a basis for analyzing the ionic trajectories. This allows systematic reduction of the uncertainty and accelerate computations of ionic conductivity in systems with a steady-state correlation structure. We provide mathematical and numerical proofs of the method’s robustness and demonstrate it on realistic electrolyte materials.

Resistance to fracture in the glassy solid electrolyte Lipon

We report on the mechanical behavior of a solid Li-ion conductor, lithium phosphorous oxynitride (Lipon), for solid-state batteries. In particular, the purpose of this investigation was to quantify the resistance to cracking (fracture toughness) of this material by nanoindentation. We observed surprising ductility and the ability to recover in Lipon. We were unsuccessful in inducing cracks in Lipon and observed accommodation of stress via pile-up and densification rather than by cracking at various strain rates. Simulations demonstrate that both deformation and densification depend on the alkali content. Densification appears to be recoverable at room temperature. We discuss the findings in comparison with nanoindentation-induced cracking in other inorganic solid electrolyte materials and provide possible explanations for high resistance of Lipon to Li filament propagation.

Plasma Synthesis of Spherical Crystalline and Amorphous Electrolyte Nanopowders for Solid-State Batteries

Here, we demonstrate the theory-guided plasma synthesis of high purity nanocrystalline Li 3.5 Si 0.5 P 0.5 O 4 and fully amorphous Li 2.7 Si 0.7 P 0.3 O 3.17 N 0.22 . The synthesis involves the injection of single or mixed phase precursors directly into a plasma torch. As the material exits the plasma torch, it is quenched into spherical nanocrystalline or amorphous nanopowders. This process has virtually zero Li loss and allows for the inclusion of N, which is not accessible with traditional synthesis methods. Finally, we further demonstrate the ability to sinter the crystalline nanopowder into a dense electrolyte membrane at 800 °C, well below the traditional 1000 °C required for a conventional Li 3.5 Si 0.5 P 0.5 O 4 powder.
