Anastigmatic three-mirror telescope

Proposed three-mirror telescope provides high resolution over flat image field of 1.5 degrees. Telescope also suppresses stray-light without elaborate baffling system, making it well suited for space astronomy and other high performance and low-light level applications.

Starsat: A space astronomy facility

Preliminary design and analyses of a versatile telescope for Spacelab missions are presented. The system is an all-reflective Korsch three-mirror telescope with excellent performance characteristics over a wide field and a broad spectral range, making it particularly suited for ultraviolet observations. The system concept is evolved around the utilization of existing hardware and designs which were developed for other astronomy space projects.

Reflective Schmidt corrector

A technique based on the use of an off-axis corrector in two orthogonal planes is presented for optimizing the reflective corrector that is to replace the refractive corrector plate of a Schmidt camera in high resolution space astronomy applications. The technique can easily be applied to any off-axis angle depending on configuration, field of view, and focal ratio of the instrument. It is pointed out, however, that the general performance degrades and the field of view shrinks with increasing off-axis angles.

Aplanatic two-mirror telescopes: A systematic study. I - Cassegrainian configuration

A systematic performance analysis of aplanatic Cassegrainian telescopes has been accomplished by means of a ray trace program. The results indicate that the available field angle for a given geometric spot size is, to a very close approximation, a function of the relative back focal distance only. Image curvatures, as computed by third-order theory and by the ray trace program, were found to be in very close agreement. Image curvature is plotted as a function of the ray height ratio for a wide range of secondary magnification.

Two well-corrected four-mirror telescopes

A study has been conducted of a configuration resembling that of a Cassegrain telescope with two nested mirrors in the plane of the primary and two nested mirrors in the plane of the secondary. The focal plane was located in the plane of the first and the third mirror. The four surfaces available in the device for corrections made it possible to correct for third-order spherical aberration, coma, astigmatism, and distortion.
